Our Hale Makai Beach Cottages are truly a romantic getaway. We are located ocean-front at the secluded part of Tunnels Beach, called Kepuhi Point Beach on the North Shore of Kauai. Our amazing 1 and 2 bedroom cottages all have amazing ocean views and are surrounded by the tropical grounds of Hale Makai. The scent of the ocean mist and the fragrance of orchids, plumerias and hibiscus embraces our guests upon their arrival. Steamer chairs and hammocks invite you to relax in the garden and the sound of surf pulls our guests to the beach where our lawn ends... We call it Paradise, the perfect place for a Kauai Beach Vacation, a Romantic Honeymoon, a Couples Retreat or Family Beach Vacation.
Our Kauai Honeymoon Cottages offer comfort, style and simplicity. Beautiful Travertine floors and European designer furniture give our beach homes a stylish appearance. A modern bathroom with Spa Shower and soaking tub adds luxury. The open living and dining areas take advantage of the unobstructed ocean views. When you stay at Hale Makai Cottages you are only a few steps from the beach.
The North Shore of Kauai is famous for the legendary NaPali Coast, as it has the most pristine beaches and the lushes tropical vegetation of all of the Hawaiian Islands. Our property is located right there, in one of the most secluded and private parts of the North Shore, in Haena. From our property, our guests can walk along the beach all the way to Ke’e Beach. The beach walk has beautiful vistas of Bali Hai and leads through all of Tunnels Beach, Haena Beach Park to the end of Ke’e Beach. Ke’e Beach is located at the bottom of Bali Hai, where the famous Kalalau Trail begins.
This little cottage is not fancy, but if you are looking for the perfect, relaxing vacation stay, it is hard to beat. It is wonderfully private; only the adjacent cottages are within view, and they are similarly private. The view is of the Pacific and Hanalei Bay, and the cottage is sufficiently elevated that (the few) visitors walking by on the beach have no view of the cottage. The cottage is very nicely furnished in and out, with plenty of towels and nice linens. It is about a 15 minute drive to Hanalei, so you have the best of all worlds - seclusion, yet close enough to one of the best beach towns in the world. An added bonus - the resort next door has a very nice restaurant and coffee shop should you decide not to drive into town. My wife and I came to this property with high expectations, though not really knowing what to expect, and it exceeded our expectations in every measure.
The Hale Makai Cottages are absolutely not to be missed! They are incredibly well appointed, with not a stone unturned. Beautiful kitchens, clean & fresh interiors that create a warm and relaxing vacation. We came in June and while the weather wasn't what we thought it would be (it was much rainier) we could not have cared less! The views were amazing and the place lended such a great inside/outside feeling that when it was raining it was amazing to hear the noise on the roof and be in such a soothing environment. The owners are absolutely fabulous people; incredibly fun to sit and talk with and are respectful and caring with thier space. What a wonderful space for them to share. I highly recommend staying at the Hale Makai Cotttages; we cannot wait until we're able to return.
Best,
Cynthia & Jason
We were in town for a wedding and wanted to experience a more authentic Kauai experience than spending the week confined in the St. Regis. The Hale Makai Cottages fit the bill perfectly.
The property is steps from the beach (we walked along the beach to Tunnels one morning) and very well kept. The house was exceptionally clean and well stocked with everything you'd need. We ended up cooking dinner all 3 nights, there are some great farmer's markets nearby, and found the kitchen well equipped with all the pots, pans and cutlery required for meal prep. There was even a BBQ right off the back of our unit which we made use of one night!
The property is pretty far down the Kuhio Highway (about a 20 minutes drive outside of Hanalei Bay) which means it's paradise for anyone looking for a quiet getaway. We'll definitely be coming back a highly recommend to anyone looking for a similar experience.
We've stayed at VRBOs on Oahu, the Big Island and in San Francisco. All were nice BUT this was the BEST in terms of location ... paradise right on the water, good snorkeling ... steps from our cottage and appointments ... simply elegant. Equally important ... there were more than enough towels to keep me happy!
The owners were on site when we were there. They were attentive to details, welcoming and extremely gracious. Our liaison, Susan, was always responsive and eager to make the experience as close to perfect as it could be.
Absolute paradise! This was one of the most relaxing and peaceful places I have every stayed. Steps from the beach. Amazing views. We stayed in the Hibiscus cottage which was very roomy and well appointed. We even had a private chef come in and cook us dinner on our last night. Despite incredible humidity (rainy day) on one of the days, it was still quite enjoyable. Susan was very helpful with all of the arrangements. If you don't want to leave, shop for food before you arrive.
For our first trip to Kaua'i (after repeat visits to O'ahu and Maui over many years), I wanted to choose a hideaway cottage where we could feel the beauty and power of the island's nature with five senses. I was also looking for the comfort of high standard in which we would happily wake up to a fresh morning, enjoy the afternoon or relax and wrap up the evening.
If the above resonates well with you, you will probably not regret driving some extra miles after passing Hanalei, crossing a few one-lane bridges, to eventually find your lovely cottage #3 tucked away off the beaten path in Ha'ena. Certainly we did not. We truly enjoyed every moment of our stay there!
Here are some of the things we particularly loved about Cottage #3:
- Ideally tropical environment surrounded by palm trees, looking out to the ocean (the closest to the beach, of 5 cottages on the property)
- Beautiful coral beach steps away and visible from the living room (Almost-private, shared only with just a handful of neighbors)
- Snorkeling with turtles and fish right there!
- Breakfast on the wooden-deck lanai
- Oversized hammock in the garden
- Big bath tub (with a bonus ocean view)
- Nice balance of luxury and practicality, with well-appointed furniture plus everything you need for a comfortable stay
- The owner took good care of us via emails, while respecting our privacy during our entire stay
Just a few reminders:
- To eat out (except at the next-door Mediterranean), you need to drive 10 to 15 minutes to the next small town of Hanalei. We did not mind driving, and ate at a few fine restaurants there including BarAcuda and Dolphin's.
- On the North Shore of Kaua'i, expect some rain. We were very fortunate to have very little during the day, as it rained mostly at night.
- If shopping is on your To-Do List during your stay on the island, you may not complete your mission here.
For my wife and I, it was Paradise! We absolutely loved Cottage #3 and would recommend to others!
