Montofoli is ideal for family vacations.
The DOVECOT at the Montofoli Estate is built on the ruins of a Roman Bath and it is a total of 140 square meters. It is fully air-conditioned and each item that forms the interior decoration has its own history and origin.
The RED HOUSE is a neoclassical building, fully air-conditioned and very elegantly furnished. The high ceilings with the piano and the fireplace make it a very luxurious yet cosy house and the verandas are ideal for the whole day and night during most of the year.
The BELVEDERE is a modern and comfortable house, situated in a very sunny spot with wonderful view. It comfortably fits 4 people + 2 in the large living room sofas. It is fully air-conditioned, has a large blooming veranda and direct access to the pool.
The POOL area is situated at a panoramic spot with citrus trees overlooking the vineyard and sea. It makes a perfect spot for midday ouzos and evening drinks while enjoying the beautiful sunset. The pool is shared between the two houses and is equipped with an automatic safety cover for children.
Enjoy tours of the vineyard and taste the wines produced at the Estate in its wine cellar built on a the remains of a pottery workshop dated 400BC.
The Wine Cellar: The wine cellar of the estate is the Frankish church of St. Marc, which during the Ottoman occupation was turned into horses’ stables. You can still see today the remains of the Christian frescoes on its inner walls (outer-walls today). It is also quoted that when Karystos was conveyed to the Catalans from the Venetians in 1365, the contract was signed in this very church. A little over a meter under the wine cellar lies a sleeping pottery workshop dating back to 400 BC. Today, this is where we keep our dessert wine in French oak barrels and in bottles. This is also where the guided tours and wine tasting take place.
The ancient staircase: The famous staircase counts 157 steps and was built to serve the cultivation of the land when the terraces were created. What is of great interest is that the staircase is built from architectural parts of ancient temples in an artistic way by worthy masters of the time. Seen from above, this is another characteristic part of Montofoli Estate leading from its lower part to the level of the houses. It is said that the staircase is built on an ancient road that used to lead to a very important place.
Guided Tour: Beginning on the 1st of July and for every Saturday until the end of September we offer guided tours at 19.00. The tour includes a narration of the historical background of the estate, a walk in the vineyard and a wine tasting of our 'Montofoli Estate' label, all in all a 40 minute experience.
I left Sweden for Greece some time before I married my husband, and we purchased Montofoli Estate in 1986.
Montofoli Estate bears the imprint of history in architecture, spirit and character of previous times and owners. The positive energy of the whole place made the hard work ahead easy and truly inspiring. There were sweaty and dusty days when we just crashed out on a heap of stones sipping champagne and enjoying the sunset, accumulating energy for the next day.
My husband and I live in Athens now. My daughter just settled with her family in Montofoli and we find ourselves staying longer weekends there now.
Marianne Larsson-Karacostas purchased this villa in 1986
We started the restoration with the Dovecot, where we then could stay with our three daughters throughout the work on both buildings and landscape. Since there was no proper road leading up to the houses, the restoration work was shared between men, mules and donkeys. Louisa, our own beloved donkey joined the workforce on equal terms. She was a friendly creature who immediately became the center of attention whenever she stepped in to join our party and welcome guests. She had that rare Natural Presence.
Thick rounded walls of a Roman bath served as base for the 8 m. high dovecot with pigeon nests and bird entrance at the south wall. We felt like intruders and decided to keep that entrance open but later had to close it with a glass window since the previous occupants clearly were not “housetrained”. We missed them, but kept in touch as they moved into the many empty nests in the terrace walls.
Montofoli is clearly has a unique beauty. But what is most astounding is the view. No matter where in Montofoli you find yourself, you have the most beautiful view of the gulf of Karystos.
Our family would like to thank you for a fantastic stay at one of your beautiful and historic houses.
We have really enjoyed the surroundings, the nature and spirit this place possesses.
Furthermore we really appreciate the level of service showed to us from the start of our vacation.

The first week of August 2016 we stayed with two adults and three teenage girls in Belvedere. The house is great - ac throughout which was lovely as it was just under 40C. Washingmachine / dishwasher/ tv all in good working order. The estate is beautiful and we were given a guided tour through the Vineyard and ended up tasting the very special dessert wine. Danae and her husband Constatntino are very helpful and give interesting tips for exploring the area. The pool is wonderful. There are plenty of secluded beaches nearby - all of the beaten track do not expect mass tourism here!!!
We recommend this estate highly!
We had a miraculous week in the Montofoli Estate. The house Belvedere is furnished very well and equipped, everything is affectionate and is made careful. Danae and Constantino are excellent hosts and are available really always with advice & action. They have a vast amount tips which have still given an understanding of the wonderful area with their great and small attractions to us. Pool & garden and all undeveloped outskirt areas are extremely nice and maintained very well. One has a wonderful view avon of the patio on the sea. Children are with all what belongs to them, pretty welcome. A total of one great reference for the families which would like to spend a special and authentic vacation.
This place is special. So special that when our week's booking was finished, we stayed on and cancelled other arrangements for the rest of our holiday.
The accommodation is clean, simple and basic, it is not a manicured designer villa. It is on a working wine farm, parts of which date back to 400BC - and they have the stones to prove it. This means it is a fascinating place to explore.
The owners are fabulous. Nothing was too much trouble for them and they did all they could to make our stay a success. Even the farm dog went out of her way to make us welcome.
The local town is quiet (in early September) with some great tavernas. And the nearby beaches are large and empty.
This was the best holiday we have had for a long time.
From my mum: My Daughter came home to visit with her husband and two friends. We all wanted a relaxing holiday, swimming pool, BBQ and pleasant surroundings. We found Montofoli on internet and it looked perfect for us. We rented both properties, we stayed in the Dove Cote and it was charming our friends in the other villa. Everything was provided for us, and the antiques gave it that extra Greek atmosphere. Danae took us for a tour of the vineyard and the wine cellar . We had a tray of preserves, for our breakfast, home made marmalade which was delicious. From Montofoli you can look down on the whole of Karystos, the views are picture postcard. Our friends spent hours walking while we lazed by the pool which is surrounded by trees. Most evenings we used the BBQ as it was so pleasant to sit outside. We did enjoy a meal down by the sea which the owners recommended, even more enjoyable as the main coast road is closed to traffic at night. I would highly recommend it to couples and families especially if you enjoy walking. Although we have stayed at many hotels here and abroad, this was for sure one of the best Greek holidays as owners and staff were so hospitable.
From me: My husband and I wanted a relaxing break with friends and family and that is what we got. True Greek hospitality, quiet and fresh air. The pool was glorious and we enjoyed BBQs every night. Danae and her family are wonderful and really anything I say about how she went out of her way for us would be an understatement. On a practical note, the house was well equipped, well designed and beautifully tasteful. Everything was clean and if we needed anything it appeared in no time when requested. I would thoroughly recommend these cottages as a wonderful place to stay. You could rent both as we did or just one of them. They are very independent of each other and you don't feel as though you are intruding on each other's space at all.
We rented both properties for a week at Easter. We were a party of 10 (6 adults and 4 children) and the houses accommodated us very well. Both houses are well equipped and beautifully designed. There are wonderful views of the bay from the property and plenty of places to sit outside to enjoy them. The owners were extremely welcoming and did everything possible to make us feel at home. They recommended great places to eat, lovely secluded beaches and even the best rocks for diving into the sea. We didn't have the best weather (it was still quite cold), but we had the best holiday.
The Montofoli Estate is in the Ancient Town of Karystos, on Evia Island, the second largest island in Greece after Crete.
