The cottage has a cosy living room, separate kitchen, two bedrooms (one with a king size bed and one with a double bed), a bathroom with over bath shower and a dedicated parking space behind the cottage. Amenities include: Hive controlled central heating, electric oven, gas hob, microwave, washing machine, fridge freezer, coffee machine, TV with Freeview Recorder and DVD. The area: Helmsley is the only market town in the North York Moors National Park and is a perfect base to enjoy the National Park, Yorkshire Coast and Howardian Hills AONB. There are English Heritage and National Trust attractions nearby (Rievaulx Abbey, Byland Abbey, Pickering Castle, Nunnington Hall etc) as well as the famous coastal town of Whitby, the steam railway in Pickering and the historic walled city of York.

The town: There is plenty to do in Helmsley, including attractions such as the Castle, the Walled Garden, Duncombe Park, National Centre for Birds of Prey and Arts Centre, browsing the shops and art galleries and of course savouring delights from the award winning pubs and eateries (Helmsley even has it's own Brewery!).

About Jacqui Snowdon

I was born and raised in North Yorkshire and although I now live in Surrey, I'm a Yorkshire lass at heart and spend as much time as possible in beautiful Helmsley.

Jacqui Snowdon purchased this house in 2017

Why Jacqui Snowdon chose Helmsley

I grew up close to the North York Moors and have always loved the place, and having a home in Helmsley is a dream come true. John and I fell in love with this little cottage, it's right in the heart of town, walking distance to all the shops, cafes, pubs and amenities, but also has it's own parking space which is a godsend in this popular, and therefore very busy town.

What makes this house unique

We have two lovely little dogs and have often taken them on cottage holidays in the past, but it's not always been easy to find a nice place that will take our furry friends. So it was important to us to make this place dog friendly, without compromising on the nice finishing touches for the doggy owners too!

Loved it.

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay in Helmsley which is beautiful and the cottage was just through an alley off the High Street which was brilliant. There is plenty to do and lots of fab walks which our dog Bella absolutely loved. The cottage was lovely, clean and had everything that you needed, we would highly recommend and we will be back. Loved it thank you.

Very disappointing

  • 1 of 5

Having read the reviews, I dismissed Lauren F, but have to say I now agree with her comments. The cottage is much closer to the main road than indicated and we were woken on three occasions by ‘revellers’ using the alleyway at the front as a short cut. The road noise was considerable as well, with delivery lorries and farm vehicles waking us before 4 am one morning. The delivery vans at the rear were intrusive, parking right outside the kitchen window. Of course, I appreciate that these things are not within the control of the owner, but I do think people need to be made aware of this. The parking space is further from the cottage than we expected from the description. In addition, I would not recommend this cottage for 4 people as the 2 of us found it cramped. The ‘dining area’ is a folded table in the sitting room, with folding chairs stored under the stairs. We also had no tea towels (I didn’t bother to bring this to the owners attention as it was easier just to buy one) and found the standard of cleaning below what we expected. Of 3 holiday cottages we stayed at on this trip, Clothes Prop Cottage was, by far, the worst and also the most expensive. We left 2 days early.

We had a really enjoyable stay,so central for everything,in Helmsley and surrounding area. The cottage was very accommodating, very clean and comfortable. Special thank you for the bottle and card to celebrate our Golden Wedding! We can thoroughly recommend this lovely cottage, would certainly return. Good to have own parking space.

Comfortable, well equipped cottage in the heart of Helmsley

  • 4 of 5

Clothes Prop Cottage is a very comfortable cottage, just off the high street and market square.

The decor is very tasteful, with a lovely theme of hares throughout the rooms? The two leather settees and footstool are perfect to relax into, after a long day on your feet. The kitchen is well equipped, although a small sharp knife, a cloth and maybe a second tea towel would be useful additions.

Upstairs, are two double bedrooms and a bathroom with a good shower over the bath. The bed was very comfortable and there was plenty of storage space. The only thing missing was a full length mirror.

The wifi is a bit hit and miss, as it kept going off and then coming on again.

There seems to be quite a thoroughfare of pedestrians to the front of the property, as it is a cut through to the high street and the access to the backs of the shops. It also gets quite noisy out the back on the gravel track, despite it being residents access only. The back of the Indian restaurant is out the back, and they seem to come and go making deliveries and wheeling out bins through the alley quite a lot. As the side of the cottage is against the alley, you hear the metal gate opening and shutting.

Once you get used to all the comings and goings on three sides it's ok. It's just to begin with, you think someone's in the next room!

Overall, we enjoyed our stay. It's ideally situated with everything on your door step.

Helmsley is a beautiful little town with lots to see and do.

There are plenty of good eateries; the Italian across the road and Mullions are particularly good, and very popular!

There are lots of cafes to choose from and a wide selection of interesting shops. The market on a Friday is worth a visit too.

Our favourite day out was visiting the National Bird of Prey Centre in Duncombe Park. An amazing day out and highly recommended!

Lovely, cosy, central cottage

  • 4 of 5

Great holiday cottage, perfect for the two of us and our two dogs. It had everything we needed and was lovely and clean. Only issue was that the king size bed in main bedroom was too soft for us, but the double in smaller room was great. Thanks for a lovely few days.

Excellent cottage, great location and parking- perfect

  • 5 of 5

Short break for my daughter and I, plus our collie dog! The cottage was everything it said it was on line ( not always the case!!) beautifully furnished ,spotlessly clean and very well equipped, thank you jacqui.

Jacqui was great to deal with , quick responses and very helpful, much appreciated

The location is so central , down an alley so quirky with parking behind, a real bonus!

Helmsley is a delight , so pretty and lots of good shops and tea rooms/ pubs, , plenty of independent businesses which made it more unique and everywhere was dog friendly, including the little department store Brown’s all which helped make the weekend special

Would recommend visiting Helmsley brewery for a beer, trying the local fish and chip around the corner from the cottage and the lovely walk to Rievaulx abbey from Helmsley.
