Here is an excerpt from an a magazine article written by David McKay WIlson, a guest whose family has returned to The Victorian Angler for the last several years. He is a journalist, and this article is from the June 2015 edition of "Everett Potter's Travel Report":
"Then came the Victorian Angler, at 809 Kearney Avenue, where we’ve stayed for the past several years, with eight bedrooms, 3.5 bathrooms, and an outdoor shower that’s the best place to wash off after a day at the beach or afternoon of family doubles at the Cape May Tennis Club.
Most evenings, we gather on the front porch to catch up, partake in that evening’s signature cocktail and partake in lawn games out front – be it tossing bean bags in Corn Hole, or flinging Frisbees to score points in Kan Jam.
Then its dinner, with one family in charge of cooking that night, with a feast that could begin with raw oysters or smoked bluefish from the Lobster House.
For Cape May, the Victorian Angler is a great value, at $4,000 a week. We’ve paid more than $6,000 for previous houses, but they all had air-conditioning. The Angler, staying true to its Victorian roots, has no summer-time cooling, except for the fans in each of the bedrooms and the cool Atlantic breeze off the Atlantic, just two blocks away.
We’ve developed our routine over the years. We walk daily to the Queen Street beach, sitting just to the left of the lifeguard stand, where our cousins and another Connecticut family knows to meet us. There, we’ll body-surf the waves, fling Frisbees, or hunker down under a beach umbrella to read that novel we’ve saved for vacation reading."
The current owners, Dave and Sharon Albinson, are both NJ natives. They lovingly restored The VIctorian Angler from several apartments to it's original configuration as a single family, eight bedroom dwelling.
David and Sharon Albinson purchased this house in 1991
When Dave and Sharon bought the home, it was split into three separate apartments, each with a separate kitchen and bath. They recognized the quality construction and Victorian charm under the many layers of paint and linoleum. Years of work have resulted in the house restored to its original status as a premier example of Cape May Victorian architecture.
We loved this house! Even though we sometimes had 11 people sleeping over, there were plenty of places to find privacy or to play a game without disturbing others. We were very happy there.
Back in the day, we never had air conditioners or multiple indoor showers at the beach. Ocean air, clawfooted tubs and outdoor showers were a delight just as they are today. This house was great for our multi-generational family vacation. There were at time 16 people ages 2-84 plus 2 dogs. The house met our needs and never felt crowded. It has a wonderful front porch for gathering and we could hear the music from the Chalfonte. Some of the pillows and mattresses could be better but with an active group, people slept well generally speaking. The house brings back memories to me since my dear friend's parents stayed there for years (1970--1983?) when it was apartments. It has great antiques but is comfortable for the little hands that enjoyed touching the old things. This house reflects the essence of a family beach vacation when we were growing up. My sister and I loved it but the millenials had some reservations namely the lack of AC. The owners were very nice and helpful with any issue we encountered including the grouchy B&B owners next door. They complained about the dogs barking our first full day and yelled at my 4 yr old grandson for smelling their flowers. We had gone to Beach Plum Farm out for about 2 hours returning to quiet dogs. Obliviously they don't like kids or dogs. They would avoid eye contact or saying Good morning even though there is a small area between the houses. Their B&B (Odgen) is adults only. What does one expect living next to an 8 bedroom house that's great for families! Life is too short to be a grouch. The house is 2 blocks from the beach, the promenade and 5 blocks to Washington St. Mall. As always Cape May is a gem. Check it out.
Very close to the beach. Quiet neighborhood. Easy walking to restaurants and quaint shopping area.
The house had lots of places to just sit and hang out - 2 parlors, 2 conversation areas on the porch, spacious kitchen, lovely dining room. We had cocktails and knitting on the porch, game night in the dining room and everyone crammed into the kitchen while we prepared meals.
We had 12 people and 2 dogs and we had plenty of room. House sleeps 20 if you can have 2 people in every double or queen bed, so for families or friends who know each other VERY well. For our group, with lots of singletons, 12 was just right.
The house is decorated and maintained beautifully and the owners were very easy to work with.
If I ever needed a vacation home this big again, I would happily stay at The Victorian Angler. This was my first stay ever in Cape May and I'll be coming back.
Our Stay at The Victorian Angler made our time in Cape May for our sons wedding perfect. It was close to the venue and restaurants. The home exuded charm giving a true Cape May experience. The beds were comfortable and there was ample room in the house for everyone without getting in each others way. I especially liked having coffee on the front porch in the morning.
The property is in a great location, just 2 blocks to the beach. Use of the grill made cooking dinner easy each night. There was more than enough space for every to have a room and plenty of bathrooms to accommodate for the group of 12 occupying the home.
Two blocks from the beach, the Victorian Angler provides easy access to the ocean and boardwalk, and is a five minute walk from restaurants and shops on the Cape May Mall. Just a few blocks to miniature golf, and food ranging from fine dining at The Washington Inn, to pizza on the boardwalk.
