A great room separates this 4 bedrooms, 3 bath, with a 40' x 20' pool where you will swim while taking in the million dollar view of the South Pacific, Terraba River, Bay of Coronado and the Osa Peninsula. Granite counter tops and tiled floors with room for all your clothes make this vacation casa the place you will not want to leave. Within a few minutes you can be on the beaches of Playa Hermosa, Playa Uvita, Playa Ballena, Playa Pinuela, Playa Ventanas or Playa Tortuga. The famous Marino Ballena National Park with its "Whales Tail" feature is also a few minutes away. Several times a year you can take a tour boat out to see the whales breaching. Behind the house rise the mountains with sounds of a distant waterfall and the occasional visit of toucans and the distant sounds of howler monkeys and the waves breaking on the beach.

About Edward Byron Baughman
I am a central Illinoian who because of many mission trips to Costa Rica decided to have a retirement/ winter home here. When I am not in Costa Rica I rent out this Luxury home to friends and travelers to share the absolute beauty and experience of the last frontier in Costa Rica.
Edward Byron Baughman purchased this Chateau / Country House in 2016
Why Edward Byron Baughman chose Ojochal
After studying the area and the real estate market and viewing hundreds of properties in the $500,000 to $750,000, we choose this one-of-a-kind ocean view where you can be in the pool and still see 160 degrees of ocean and to the back of the casa is the green jungle continuing up the mountains with a peak height of about 12,000 feet. With almost no lights from other houses or business at night you can see thousands of stars which you cannot see from most places in the populated world.
What makes this Chateau / Country House unique
Gated casa in a gated community all on one level with most of the house being wheelchair accessible. One little step and your are poolside or take the garden route to the pool with no steps. Beautiful carport for your car. Great room with dining table or marble topped bar for those preferring casual dining. On one early morning by the pool 16 toucans stopped momentarily to eat from the Cecropia trees on their journey up the mountain. Coffee by the pool at 5:00 am while watching the many species of birds before they retire into the jungle for the day is a favorite of many visitors. You should see a couple of different species every day. Cool mountain air comes from behind the casa while refreshing ocean breezes engulf the front of the casa during the day. Basket swing for the most relaxing time possible.

Well-appointed, comfortable, incredible views!
My mom and I absolutely loved staying at Byron’s place. It’s the perfect blend of secluded with easy access to shops/restaurants, very secure feeling with a gate, houses seals up nicely and frankly not many bugs to speak of outside anyway. We saw SO many animals from our own backyard (very large by the way), my mom just went crazy with her camera between those and the sunsets!
The pool is large and well cared for; I swam laps in it most days. The sunsets from the back porch/pool area are breathtaking. We hung out outside pretty much whenever we were home. There’s also an outdoor kitchen.
Byron’s kitchen has everything we could need, and the beds were very comfy (note - we prefer firm beds!).
The AC in the bedrooms works very well.
With the way this house is laid out, it would be very comfortable for up to two couples and their kids. Or a family that has a teen who might want a bit more of their own space.
Byron and Sonya were very helpful! When navigating to the home, just follow the small white signs for Bella Rosa Bed and Breakfast once you’re in Ojochal. It’s basically next door to the house.
There’s TONS of awesome stuff to do in the area. We went to 3 different beaches, went whale watching, snorkeling, salsa dancing, kayaking, to the Uvita Féria and Isidro Féria, volunteered at a local sustainability farm, and went out to eat multiple times (you can find any cuisine you want to eat between Ojochal, Uvita, and Dominical). If you wanted to do a day trip to Osa or Panama, it would be very easy as they are nearby. And we hung out at the house a lot too, because it’s really just spectacular.
This was the highlight of our CR trip and we’re both hoping to go back! Thanks Byron for sharing your wonderful home!
There were a few small glitches but easily forgotten when you looked out over the ocean. Early mornings are not to be missed here!! Loved the outdoor kitchen, plenty of seating inside and out, although we weren't inside much. Very nice neighbourhood but completely and totally private. Great place for birdwatching. We only seen the howlers once but heard them all the time. Nice breezes most of the time which we welcomed. Pool does not have a shallow end but we were a group of adults so not a problem.
Great Property with amazing ocean views and abundance of wildlife!
This was my families first trip to Costa Rica and we picked the perfect house. There were 5 of us...my wife and I along with our 11 year old daughter and my parents. The house was well stocked with everything from towels to pots and pans. The owner was very good at answering emails and gave us some really good tips on restaurants and wildlife viewing. My parents are into bird watching and every morning would get up early and watch dozens of Toucans migrate up the mountain right next to the house and we had a Coati walk across the back of the property a few mornings as well. The trip was perfect thanks to using the WAZE App on our phones as the house is hard to find the first time especially at night...we just put in "Bella Rosa" and it got us right to the driveway. Costa Rica is an amazing country and this house was a perfect home base for all our excursions. I would stay here again in a heartbeat!
Perfect two weeks!!
You can't beat the views and the space!! A group of 7 of us stayed for two weeks. Lots of room, great kitchen, cozy beds but most of all a wonderful view and pool!! We spent a fair amount of time at the casa getting up early and birdwatching. There is plenty of room here for a large group.
The casa is a great base to explore all the area has to offer. Lots of beaches within an easy drive.
"Tipical" Costa Rican rural road takes you up to the Casa. Be prepared to take your time going into town and you will be fine.
Amazing view, pool, and large house!
We stayed here with three families and it was perfect! Amazing views!!! We loved playing in the large pool, the huge covered patio area, the well equipped and large kitchen! And the bedrooms worked great for each family! A few minor repair issues could have been nice (ceiling fan didn't work, toilet didn't flush) but I have no doubt that if we had asked, they would have jumped to fix it! We just didn't want to be "tie-down" to a repair schedule on our Christmas vacation :) We'd definitely stay here again!!
And, oh, that view!
With two grown children, vacations are a little different from when you are just a couple of traveling with young children that you can just tell them when and where you are going and just drag them along! This was my wife and my first trip to Costa Rica and when you read about the country, there are a number of things that would seem to be “must do” – volcanoes, rain forests, days on a beach, eco visits and tons of animal sightings. Our vacation didn’t really hit any of these directly straight on. We usually got slow/late starts to the day and due mostly to the "rustic" state of the road leading up to the house, we chose not to be out too much after dark.
One comment for future travelers: we had problems first finding the house since we arrived at night. The Ojochal sign on the main road was not very visible. It probably didn’t help that it was pouring rain :-). We also had some difficulties in seeing the Bella Rosa since they are pretty small and there could probably be more of them along the route.
Also a general recommendation for anybody renting a car in Costa Rica who intends to do ANY driving off the paved roads is to get a good, well-powered 4x4, not a "budget" 4x4. The small engine on our compact 4x4 struggled to get up the rocky hills, including the ones leading to our house, requiring one to advance floor the engine in order to not stop dead on the hill.
One comment about the location of the house/VRBO property description: It is slightly misleading to say that the house is 10 minutes from 6 beaches since it can take 10 - 20 minutes to go from the house to the main road, depending on the current state of the road and how much one wants to test the suspension of both the car and the occupants.
BUT, bottom line - we LOVED the house, the view is absolutely spectacular. What did we do in the week we were there? Great beaches - Playa Ventanas beach which was beautiful, what a nice cove with breaking waves and caves on both sides of the beach, Playa Ballena (no dolphin or whale sightings :-(. A nice walk in park Manuel Antonio with that picture perfect beach. A mangrove boat tour in the afternoon where we were adopted by an entire troop of cappuchin monkeys. We didn't eat out much but we did have one EXCEPTIONAL at Exotica, just down the road from the house! Before leaving to drive back to San Jose, we treated ourselves to a scrumptious breakfast at Pancito Café. Pura Vida, indeed!
The road is now being paved up through the village and is half done as of August 2017 That cuts time to the casa to about 11 minutes.
About 850' altitude in the mountains above Ventanas beach. Without the heat and humidity of the beach! Cool breezes at night from the mountains. During the day breezes come up the mountain from the Pacific shore below. You drive through the community of Ojochal. A community with grocery, Doctors office, Dentist, hardware store, car rental, taxi services and internet café and of course the many restaurants with chefs from around the world. We are in a gated community in the mountain at a private end of a road. Overlooking the waters of several beaches and at times you can see a several hundred foot waterfall in the mountain behind the casa. Uvita is a community just to the north about 10 miles. Horseback waterfall tours. Another waterfall close to Uvita with only 5 minute hike from car. Whale watching and dolphin tours. A talapia farm a few minutes south where you can catch your own if you like. A zip line tour is also south about 20 minutes. Dominical a laid back surf community is about 30 minutes north of Ojochal. Over 300 species of birds can be found by the avid bird watcher in this area. You can fly to Palmar Norte about 20 miles south or to Quepos and the National Park Manuel Antonio and avoid the drive from San Jose if time is a problem
