About Frederick Fairbanks

Welcome to The Fairbanks Lodge!

My name is Frederick Fairbanks and I am delighted to have you stay at my coastal Maine lodge.

Frederick Fairbanks purchased this lodge in 2015

Why Frederick Fairbanks chose Boothbay Harbor

Built from the very trees that surrounded it almost a century ago, the Fairbanks is nestled in a lush forest area known to the world as Sprucewold. This exquisitely peaceful property with commanding views of the ocean, is located within walking distance of all the excitement downtown Boothbay Harbor has to offer.

When I’m here, I imagine the pioneering spirit of my great, great, great-grandfather, Lyman Nichols Fairbanks, who in 1853 sailed around Cape Horn on an adventurous trip in search of gold during California’s Gold Rush.

His is the picture you’ll observe hanging over the mantel, proudly attired in his bearskin coat which must have kept him quite warm on his long ocean-going journey. You’ll also notice his sea chest in the Great Room that carried his clothing and supplies from New England to the West and back again.

I love watching the boats sail in and out of Linekin Bay while enjoying the shade of the full-length covered porch. Sometimes, on misty summer mornings, I feel as though I can see Lyman’s ship heading out into the Atlantic for parts unknown.

Another thing I like about the lodge is that it has all the creature comforts that you could want, yet maintains the atmosphere of its history.

Much of the furniture in the Great Room is original to the lodge and handmade by Mr. Elmer Bergquist who is mentioned in the book ‘Rusticators in Sprucewold: Preserving the Legacy’.

“Oh, the peace and quiet of this cabin porch as I sit here next to the very branches of fir balsam trees among which many little birds dart. I can look over the tops of the trees below…It nears sunset and the sky and waters beneath are painted in glorious colors, crimson, ceruse, and purple, slowly changing to soft mauve and pink…The night air is cool, I go into the cabin, light the lights and the fire, turn on the radio. The spell is broken. Again I become a part of the world outside with its strife and greed. It is hard to believe that is the same world.”

What makes this lodge unique

As of 2016, the lodge has new electrical, plumbing, bathrooms and kitchen. Some of the amenities available include: a 48” flatscreen tv with Blu-ray player and Netflix, internet with Wi-Fi, fully equipped granite counter-topped kitchen with dishwasher and Keurig coffee maker, washer/dryer and a glass-enclosed shower with 16” rain head. Family games and numerous books are available to pass the time on the occasional coastal-Maine rainy day.

There are many attractions in and around the Boothbay region including small, independently owned shops, restaurants, and ice cream stands. The Boothbay Botanical Gardens and the Railway Museum are close by as well. There are golf courses, boating and swimming locally, clam bakes and the best lobster America has to offer. All the things you need to enjoy a traditional New England summer vacation.

Beautiful cabin respite overlooking an ocean cove

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful wooden cabin with a view of the ocean cove; well-maintained, comfortable for hanging out after our daytime treks to parks, islands, and beaches. We enjoyed the quiet of the woods and the proximity to the town's amenities in Boothbay Harbor. The town is very touristy and overrun on the weekends: we were always happy to arrive back at the cabin after a journey into town. The owner is easy to contact and very responsive. We loved our week in the Fairbanks lodge!

A perfect mix of rustic Maine charm with immaculate modern upgrades

  • 5 of 5

We chose this home for its close proximity to the restaurants and activities in Boothbay Harbor and Barrett Park (wonderful park and swim spot!). We were also excited to be in the woods of the Sprucewold community and stay in one of its quintessential log cabins.

The Fairbanks possesses all of the appeal of a one-hundred-year-old cabin without any of the potential drawbacks; the kitchen, bathrooms, and entertainment center are all brand new and immaculately maintained. We have stayed in many rental homes in the area, and this one was by far the most pristine. There is also a lovely large porch with a wonderful water view. The use of space in the home is truly remarkable. The owner added several thoughtful, personalized touches to make us feel very welcome during our stay. Furthermore, he was always available and quick to respond to any of our questions both prior to and during our visit.
