Centrally located - near the golden circle: The Golden Circle is a popular tourist route in South Iceland, covering about 300 km looping from Reykjavík into central Iceland and back.
The golden circle is in short driving distance from Nonnahús.
The three primary stops on the route are the national park Þingvellir, the waterfall Gullfoss (meaning 'golden falls'), and the geothermally active valley of Haukadalur, which contains the geysers Geysir and Strokkur.
Þjórsárdalur Valley: Nonnahús is located near Þjórsárdalur Valley, a valley that includes many interesting places to visit. Þjórsárdalur lies between mount Búrfell alongside the river Þjórsá to the east and mount Skriðufell to the west. The valley has been formed and given unique look by repeated eruptions of the nearby volcano Hekla as well as other volcanoes in the vicinity. Don’t be afraid – Nonnahús is not located on a bed of lava beside any volcano.
Gjáin is a very beautiful location in Þjórsárdalur valley. The river Rauðá runs through this valley with many small waterfalls, ponds and volcanic structures. It’s in about 20 min walking distance from the historical farm Stöng, and can be driven very close to in an off-road vehicle.
The volcano Hekla can be seen from the site.
Some find this place so beautiful they (secretly) have strewn their ashes in the river to be forever be united with monumental nature in this 'paradise on earth'.
Landmannalaugar: The Landmannalaugar area is a popular tourist destination and hiking hub in Iceland's highlands. The area displays a number of unusual geological elements, like the multicoloured rhyolite mountains and expansive lava fields. The many mountains in the surrounding area display a wide spectrum of colours including pink, brown, green, yellow, blue, purple, black, and white. Two of the most popular mountains among hikers are Bláhnúkur (meaning 'blue peak') and Brennisteinsalda (meaning 'sulphur wave').
Landmannaluagar is a popular tourist destination. Tourists visit the area from June through late September, after which time the road is closed.
Many hot and cold springs create a bathing warm brook, where people bath throughout the entire year. The banks of the brook are boggy and lushly vegetated and people are kindly asked to use the wooden path across the bog to the brook. It is forbidden to use soap.
Nonnahús is great place to visit Landmannalaugar from.
Free high-speed internet.

Sjöfn purchased this house in 5
All was very good for all our family. We stay here 15 days. We are 7. The situation of the house for visiting all Sud Iceland is well. We were under the charme!!!
I was actually nervous about booking Nonnahus at first, because it seemed too good to be true. But WOW. The pictures are entirely accurate, it's beautiful inside and out. It's easy to get to, easy to find (the host emailed great directions!), easy to get into. It was immaculately clean, the kitchen is very well stocked (We cooked every night, and the kitchen had everything we needed, it even had coffee!) We had a small child with us, and the crib & highchair made our lives so much easier.
The best part was the hot pot- quick and easy to fill, the view of two volcanoes and the river was gorgeous. We actually skipped a few sightseeing things just so we could spend more time soaking.
The beds were comfortable- two of the rooms have bunk beds, and two have double beds. The view out the window of the bedroom at the end of the hall is amazing, try to claim that one for yourself. :-)
The hosts are very easy to work with, very responsive to email, and one stopped by on our first day there to make sure we had gotten settled in. This was an entirely problem-free rental, and I would gladly stay here again!
Nonnahús is amazing. Convenient location, yet with a remote and private feel. Immaculately clean. Modern and yet homey and comfortable. We enjoyed the simple family farm photos mixed in with the modern furnishings.
Every appliance we could possibly need at our fingertips. Beds covered with fluffy duvets. Most convenient washer and laundry area!
And the hot pot; most amazing views to settle us in for the evening!
An unexpected pleasure was meeting the owners. Excellent hosts and people I hope to meet again!
My wife and I arrived in Iceland Wednesday morning, we drove through south Iceland to this beautiful house in a great location. Neighbors are non existent! Privacy was great! It was so quiet! The views all around the house are great! River in the front, volcano to the side, mountains behind you and fields to the other side. We stayed here for a week and 2 days. You can drive to every point in south Iceland from the house. Vik beach, seljalandsfoss, gulfoss, thorsmork, bruarfoss, and, Reykjavik were just a few places that we visited while staying at Nonnahus. Internet was limited, but fast, hot tub was relaxing, and the TV was nice just to sit and watch late in the evenings after hiking all day. The kitchen was fully stocked with dishes, pots and pans, some spices, coffee, dish soap and other small things were nice. The only downside was 3 or 4 days while we were staying at Nonnahus, when the sun came out, flys were everywhere. We tried sitting on the deck but could not take the fly's all over. I've never seen so many flys. They stayed outside so we could go in the house to get away from them. Beautiful birds came by the house everyday. It was nice watching them from the deck and hot tub. The washer was nice to do our laundry, we had to get laundry soap, but it was great not having to do our laundry when we got home from vacation. The shower was small, but the bathroom was nice a big. The house was very clean and we'd would come back to Nonnahus if we come back to Southern Iceland. Thanks for the great stay!
Sjofn and Hilmar,
Thank you so much for sharing Nonnahus with us. The house was everything you described with all the comforts of home. Hopefully we left it as clean as we found it. The location was perfect for our photographic tour of South Iceland. The views from the deck were wonderful and it was certainly relaxing having coffee out there - even in the chilly mornings. Many thanks also for your local information sheet. It was quite helpful and we tried to visit many of the sites you listed. Wish we had stayed longer. My wife and I have decided to return to Iceland within the next few years and I hope we both can enjoy Nonnahus then.
We came to Iceland to explore and chose to be out in the countryside rather than Reykjavik. Nonnahus has one of the most beautiful locations we have had the pleasure of staying in.
The house was spotlessly clean and after driving to it through a snow storm the heat as we first opened the door was a joyous relief.
As a base to explore from it was perfect - fuel about 10 minutes up the empty road, a 30 minute drive to Selfoss for provisions from the supermarket, and all the major attractions an easy drive away. We personally recommend a trip to the secret lagoon in Fludir (about 10 miles away) - just wonderful especially if it's snowing - better than the blue lagoon because it really is heated by geysers.
The WiFi was excellent, the shower was great, the water perfectly normal and night time is dark.
We hoped to see the Northern Lights and we saw them twice from the back door. First time for an hour and then the second for a 4 hour extravaganza. The whole sky was alight in every direction - we had a massive explosive display that burst over the house. The hill isn't an issue and in-fact can help you take great aurora photos by being a great backdrop.
Take a look on YouTube search for Nonnahus and northern lights - the video is a short example from just one side window.
Nonnahus is truly a wonderful house in a spectacular location. We will be going back next year.
Nonnahus is wonderful! It was just as advertised or better. The house is very comfortable and well appointed. It was perfect for our family of five. The location is stunningly beautiful. We loved climbing the bluff behind the house. Other destinations (Gjain, Fludir, Gulfoss) were conveniently close. The whole experience was everything we had hoped for. We hope to return to Nonnahus someday.
Nonnahús is located in South Iceland, in a perfect location if you wish to travel around the South side of the island. Nonnahús is very near to Þjórsárdalur, one of the most beautiful valleys in Iceland. Nonnahús is also very close to the golden circle (Gullfoss and Geysir).
Golf: If you like playing Golf, we recommend that you visit one of the best golf 18 hole course in Iceland. It’s located at Efra Sel and is called Selsvöllur. It’s only 3 km from village Flúðir, which is only approx. 20 min from Nonnahús.
Right outside Selfoss is a 9 hole golf course called Svarfhólsvöllur (Selfoss golf course).
In approx. 20 min drive from Selfoss is 18 hole golf course called Kidjaberg and is located between river Hvítá and lake Hestvatn.
