There are many apartments with river views in Lisbon as the city was built on 7 hills. So it is with this 3-bedroom apartment with a sunny living room and a French balcony overlooking Lisbon roofs and the blue Tagus below. This is Alfama, the oldest and most typical quarter in Lisbon, from where you can start exploring the many emblematic sites the city has to offer on foot. This is a city with the unsurpassable charm of cities built on layers of History and multiple cultures. A city and an apartment which entice the discovery and the photographing of Lisbon’s many attractions.
At the heart of Alfama, on one of Lisbon’s 7 hills, there is an apartment set in an old building with an unremarkable façade. Entry to the apartment is via an alleyway. Ascending the steep stairs (no lift in this building) may not suit everyone, but the view from the apartment is worth it all: the unique light from the river is enhanced by the warm tones of the wood flooring and the brightly coloured sofás. Overlooking the river, the living room is spacious, homely and nicely decorated. A French balcony with a small table and two armchairs, is the perfect spot for a refreshing glass of wine at sunset. 2 renovated bathrooms, a lovely and fully equipped kitchen and wood ceilings and floors create just the right environment for your short break.
In this quarter, which dates back to the 8th century AD at the time of the Arab occupation, one finds a unique combination of centuries-old monuments, crafts shops, walls hiding forgotten palaces, charming squares, shabby cafes and purple bougainvilleas hanging down white-washed walls, and lively courtyards where you can have one of Lisbon’s most typical dishes - grilled sardines, grilled green peppers and boiled potatoes - and maybe a crème-brulée for dessert, not to mention a good red wine. Here one finds restaurants and taverns where you can listen to Fado, the melodic and dramatic song traditionally sung by the wives of fishermen which, in the 19th century, became Portugal’s national song when it attracted the attention of Lisbon’s elites. Fado has been awarded Unesco’s Intangible Cultural Heritage status since 2011.
This is a quarter of people who speak at each other from balcony to balcony, where they sometimes hang their washing. Typical and traditional, Alfama is a soulful quarter where locals are lively, monuments are beautiful and the many streets and corners wonderful to photograph. This is Lisbon’s most romantic quarter. From here you can reach most of old, historical Lisbon on foot. On your way, you will also come across grocers, shoemakers and other artisans who have been selling their products for over 40 years (at least)! This is real, genuine Lisbon, with which most visitors fall in love at first glance.
The apartment is walking distance from some of Lisbon’s highlights: 5 min from the Fado Museum, Panteão Nacional (where the Portuguese royal family and prestigious Portuguese are buried) and São Vicente de Fora convent; 10 min from São Jorge Castle and the Se Cathedral; 20 min from Praça do Comércio and downtown Rossio square; 25 min from aristocratic Chiado and alternative Bairro Alto quarters. And, of course, you will also wish to explore Belém - the Museum quarter. So please take a bus or a tram and spend some leisure time there. Loads to see in Belém!
Nearby, less than a 5 min walk, runs the ultra-famous 28 tram line which crosses some of the best historical quarters, as well as Santa Apolónia metro and train station which link Lisbon to all major cities. The metro network reaches a good part of Lisbon. Metro and buses can also take you to Cais do Sodré train station which serves the beautiful Cascais and Estoril summer resorts, or to Rossio train station from where you can reach Lord Byron’s beloved village of Sintra.
