A Perfect Retreat
Marlowe Cottage in my opinion can only be described as perfect in every respect. It was immaculately clean, superbly furnished and very comfortable.
The attention to detail is incredible; ranging from fresh flowers around the house, a bowl of fresh fruits and a very nice 'welcome hamper'.
We ordered a meal from the 'drop-off' menu for our arrival which was excellent and very welcome after a long journey. We would highly recommend the food which we believe is home cooked by the owners.
The village of Calbeck is quiet and away from the 'commercialisation' of some of the Lakeland towns and villages but very pretty and friendly. There is good food and beer at the village pub, just short walk away. We didn't see much of the surrounding area, we were so comfortable where we were!
The owners are very helpful and accommodating and despite being 2 hours later than expected arriving they were there to greet us, with logs burning on the stove.
We would highly recommend this property to anyone looking for a quiet, relaxing break in luxurious surroundings. We have just booked another stay!
Excellent and charming cottage
We loved our stay in this beautifful cottage.
Everything we needed and more was available.
We enjoyed the cottage and gorgeous garden.
The cake, scones and Cream was a warm welcom.
Thank you very much Peter and Ann
A beautiful cottage in a lovely location. Absolutely perfect
We loved Marlowe Cottage. The owners have considered every possible need and the welcoming cream tea was delightful. Our granddaughter loved looking at all the books. There was nothing more we needed and the cottage is located in a pretty village. Overall perfect.

We have stayed in many VRBO and Air BNB properties and this was the very best of them all! EVERY detail has been thought of (even wash cloths for Americans - hardly any to be found in Europe, it seems!). We were greeted by fresh flowers in several spots, a cream tea set out, everything fresh and lovely, even on that cloudy day. All is in perfect repair though the property is authentic and old. Each room is cozy and comfy. One bathroom has tub and shower. Both have towel warming racks. The views from every window are gorgeous - either the exquisite, fairy-land garden in back (it has filled in since the photos were taken) or the distant hills out front. Sitting at the hilltop picnic table, one sees the countryside and hears only the breeze, bees and birds. Delightful. The weather precluded our using the grill and lovely patio seating area, but that would have made for a perfect evening as well. We did use the wood stove for a cozy dessert time one evening. The road is VERY quiet, and we never heard a sound from any neighbors. The village of Caldbeck is charming in every way. You can walk just down the hill to it - 5 minutes. We had a fabulous morning tea and pastry at the Old Smithy and had two of our 4 dinners at The Oddfellow Arms. Highly recommend both. The cottage has detailed information about area attractions and walks, several of which we took, enjoying them all; even one around the village along the small river - very picturesque. Do not let the northern Lake District location put you off. We could get to all main towns and points of interest on good roads and in good time. We had a perfect walk around Lake Buttermere - no crowds there - peace, quiet and beauty. We also did the steep but short hike to see the wonderful Aira Force (waterfall). Ambleside is touristy but still retains much charm. We did not get to Windermere, and the weather precluded any boat rides, unfortunately. If you're on a budget but are able even just to walk the lake shores a bit, you will get a very good idea/impression of the lakes. The admission charges for many of the residences, etc. were too steep for our family of 5 "adults" (children 23, 20 and 16), but we did go to Lowther Castle - a ruin whose skeleton offers many dramatic pictures and whose grounds are extensive and include an incredible glen-type garden and a ridge walk overlooking the entire countryside, plus a fine museum and tea shop with lots of delicious choices. Altogether a memorable, perfect stay!
Thank you for your kind review it is much appreciated.
We are really glad you enjoyed your stay at Marlowe Cottage.
We hope we can welcome you back again in the future.

We had a lovely stay in Marlowe cottage. The cottage was a real delight with its jugs of daffodils and homely old world charm! The beds were really comfortable and the linens were sumptuous! And the beautiful tasty baking left out for us was a real treat for all of us. The attention to detail was second to none. Caldbeck is very quaint. We got out and explored the Lake District which is very beautiful. Overall a lovely holiday was had by all and we hope to go back at some stage.
Thank you for your kind comments we hope we can welcome you back again in the future .

Caldbeck is a charming village nestling in the fells of the Northern Lake District, almost equidistant from Keswick, Penrith, Cockermouth, and Carlisle. The area has outstanding scenery and excellent walking, with Skiddaw, Blencathra and many other fine fells readily accessible. Sheep and ducks roam freely, whilst the 12th century St Kentigern's Church is the resting place of the famous local huntsman, John Peel. Marlowe Cottage is the birthplace of Julia Marlowe, an acclaimed American Shakespearian actress. The welcoming village pub, the Oddfellows Arms, is a traditional Lakeland inn serving good food and Jennings real ales, whilst in the neighbouring village of Hesket Newmarket The Old Crown is famous for its unique real ales from the Hesket Newmarket Brewery. The Priests Mill, an old watermill built by a former Rector of Caldbeck houses the Watermill Cafe overlooking the river, together with interesting shops and workshops.
