About the property

Large Edwardian house recently renovated and updated with all modern conveniences newly available to rent. Up to two dogs very welcome, but please not upstairs!

There is Free wifi throughout the house, and the televisions are all freeview enabled (more channels than you could want!)

Main bedroom with king size bed (television in room) and en-suite.

Twin bedroom with two single beds (television in room), next to main bathroom.

Two further double bedrooms, each with it's own en-suite.

Fully fitted modern kitchen with Smeg dishwasher, Neff oven and grill with plate warming drawer. Toaster, kettle, induction hob, Nespresso top of the range coffee machine (please bring your own Nespresso capsules if you want to use this), fridge, freezer, and large table to comfortably seat eight people.

The downstairs is open plan, with comfortable three seater and two seater leather sofas, and a comfortable chair, in the lounge area. Working wood burner in an original fire surround. 49 inch smart television.

Music is available through an Amazon Echo. This is the original model with the better speakers! You have unlimited access to over four million tracks! The entire Amazon music library. This is a voice activated gadget. You simply say - "Alexa, play............" You can also ask for latest news, weather forecast for Porlock, etc etc.

Utility room with washing machine, condenser tumble drier, sink and microwave. Some dog beds (large), dog cage, bowls, spare lead, emergency dog food etc provided. Downstairs toilet with basin.

Fully walled garden for the safety of pets and children (please don't leave pets or children unattended anywhere on the property though).

We have tried to equip the house to the standard that we would hope to find, and hope that guests will enjoy the same.

It is a large house and the cleaners do like to do a thorough job. So we do ask guests not to check in until 4pm please, and to check out on the last day promptly by 10.00am.

We do insist on Saturday changeovers (start and finish days), as we have discovered that most people do want to start their holiday on a Saturday.

About The Owner

Steve and Juliet live in Buckinghamshire but the property is looked after by West Country Cleaners a locally based company.

Why The Owner chose Porlock

We have always liked the Exmoor area, and looked at a lot of properties before finding this one. The property had been badly fire damaged some years before and when we came across it, it was in the very final stages of being refurbished ready to be used as a holiday let. The previous owner had done a first class job of all the major works, but had another project on the go at the same time, so, for reasons best known to himself, decided to sell this house, just before it was totally ready to start letting.

Apart from the high quality finishes throughout, it was really the 4 spacious bedrooms, each with their own en-suites that attracted us. It's very nice to go on holiday with a group of friends or family, but often spoilt we feel, by too many people all trying to use, too few bathrooms.

We have been together for over thirty years, and have always had at least one dog.

The area of Exmoor is ideal for dog walking, and the house has been refurbished with dogs in mind. All of the downstairs is "wood effect ceramic tiles" which are tough enough not to suffer damage from dog "claws" and easy to keep clean.

The Dog House Porlock - Excellent Accommodation

The house is fantastic, very well appointed with all mod cons, plenty of space and in a lovely area, good local shops and nice pubs, The Royal Oak was my preferred location for beer and food.

The house was immaculate and well furnished throughout, we could not fault it. Although parking is limited the area identified for The Dog House was well respected by other residents and worked very well.

There is a lot to see and do in and around the area, Dunster Castle was a particular favourite of ours (National Trust) but the best cream tea was at Selsworthy, also NT.

We had a fantastic break which was enhanced by staying in a fantastic house, would go back anytime.

Very well presented, comfortable, pretty well everything provided. Good for dogs.

Good area to stay for adults, not so sure about younger children (we were 8 adults with dogs). Didn't do a lot of walking but would be a good walking base. Easy access to coast on foot.

Parking adequate for 2 cars and didn't have problem finding on street parking locally for third car.

Owner very responsive to queries. Accommodation very clean.

Courtyard area at the back a nice sitting and eating area and also secure for dogs.

One quibble, where was the breakfast in bed in the picture? ;-)

Well designed and equipped house in very convenient position

We have just returned from a weeks stay at the dog house. We are a family of four, and we don't have a dog. The kids, both teens loved having a ensuite bedroom each, as this isn't always the case in holiday cottages.

The house is well equipped, so you can either eat in or out. We ate at the top ship several times and the food was excellent.

The decor is tasteful, with lots of quirky dog pictures.

The house is right in the centre of the village, which has a couple of small supermarkets, a butchers, lots of pubs, tea rooms and artie shops. It is lovely for a walk to the pebble beach, and you can join the south west coast path.

The only downside when we first arrived was a slight pong of dog, but there was a problem with the hoover so I'm not sure if this was why, everything otherwise was scrupulously clean, and the smell went once the doors had been left open and a plug in bought!

I would stay here again if we return to porlock

A great rental property

Our family of 8 plus 2 small Scottie dogs stayed here for a week in August.

The house is large and has all the comforts of home. The kitchen is well equipped with a large dining table. The bedrooms all have their own bathroom which is great when you have children!! There is a little court yard garden which is safe and secure for the children and the dogs. There are 2 parking spaces provided which are in a lane at the rear of the property, but we didn't have a problem with our 3rd car as there were plenty of spaces around the near roads to park.

The location of the property is in the village of Porlock, so the shops are very near if needed, and the touristy attractions.

A huge thank you to Steve (the owner) who sorted out a minor problem for us while we were there.

I would definitely recommend this property, and we will return.

You could not ask for now!

We stayed at a The Dog House for our summer holiday with children, adults and a baby too. We’ve stayed in many lovely holiday rentals but this tops the list from a quality, location and just overall being a lovely place to stay.

The finish throughout the property is superb and it has everything you could need from games, kitchen essentials, dog essentials, everything has been thought of.

The location is fab too, the small village is has a few lovely little shops, a few pubs and a restaurant.

We had all the information we needed for our stay before we arrived and although we try not to contact owners while we’re staying somewhere we had a few things we had to discuss and Steve always instantly replied to our questions.

In summary, an amazing house in an amazing location with fabulous not hesitate to book.

Luxurious dog friendly house with everything in it that you could wish for.

Hugh, & I along with our two dogs Fred & Bramble had a wonderful week in Porlock.

Our Stay in the Dog House made it even better. The owners have obviously put a lot of thought into furnishing the house and provided everything that you could wish for. The beds were very comfortable and the fresh clean white bed linen & soft fluffy towels were a real treat. The house is situated just off the main high street and within a stones throw of all shops, pubs, and restaurants. The pubs and restaurants in Porlock were dog friendly. A big plus for us dog owners.

There are a lot of walks for those who like walking and I could not believe how friendly, welcoming, and helpful the people of Porlock are. This is a definite house for us to return to. Thank you Steve & Juliet.

Porlock is a very lovely but buzzy village, very much centred on providing for holidaymakers, but without a "kiss me quick" hat to be seen. You will find many fine places to eat, pubs, antique shops, art galleries, and museums, plus of course you're in beautiful Exmoor (the Exmoor national park covers over 260 square miles!), with all it has to offer.

Walking is very popular, and some walks pass right by the front door, even though you are only a matter of yards from the middle of the High Street. The walk down Sparkhayes lane takes you to the sea in around a mile, and then, after coming inland for a while, on to Porlock Weir, about another mile along the coast. Please see the leaflets with details of the walks. THE BREACH IN THE SHINGLE BETWEEN PORLOCK BAY AND PORLOCK WEIR MUST NOT BE CROSSED! VERY DANGEROUS!!

The moors are just at the top of Porlock Hill, with lovely walks from Brendon (We'd recommend The Stag Hunters Inn at Brendon, or the Rockford Inn, part way between Brendon and Lynmouth, for refreshments/meals) to Watersmeet and Lynmouth and the Valley of Rocks which should not be missed.

For those of you who just want to spend the day on a nice sandy beach, Woolacombe, Combe Martin, Westward Ho, Saunton Sands and many others are just a short drive down the coast.

The Lynton to Lynmouth cliff railway (powered by water and gravity!) is well worth the trip, and there are other steam train railways in the area, one of the nearest stations being at Woody Bay Station near Lynmouth.
