About Ruth & Neil Shipman
Having spent many holidays in France staying in other people's gîtes, we decided to take the plunge, leave behind our jobs in England and move lock, stock and barrel to France. We looked at lots of properties before deciding that this was the one, and we haven't looked back.
Ruth & Neil Shipman purchased this Cottage in 2015
Why Ruth & Neil Shipman chose Chatenet
We are located in the most southerly tip of the Charente Maritime, a lovely part of France renowned for being the second sunniest in the country. We are perfectly placed for day trips to the coast, visiting the fascinating city of Bordeaux, touring the famous vineyards of Cognac, or just grabbing a picnic and one of our bikes to explore the area on two wheels. If you would rather just unwind with a good book, our pool and garden overlooking the rolling countryside is the perfect place. We live on site, and are on hand if you need us, but out of the way if you don’t.
What makes this Cottage unique
Our aim is to give you the very best from our own experience of gîte holidays, taking on the good things we found, but leaving behind the bad. We look forward to welcoming friends old and new and sharing this idyllic spot.

Lovely cottage, very welcoming
My partner and I spent 3 nights at Coriander Cottage while we visited friends in the area. Ruth Shipman was very welcoming on our arrival and made sure we had plenty of wood for the burner as the weather was very cold. She also arranged a welcome basket with lots of very appreciated goodies. The cottage was warm and comfortable had everything we needed. Set in a lovely area we hope to return to enjoy Ruth's hospitality again hopefully in better and warmer weather.
Thank you for your kind words. We are so glad you enjoyed your stay with us and found everything to be as you hoped. We would delighted to welcome you both back to Chatenet one day.
Idyllic getaway in peaceful & stunning location
You are made to feel welcome from the moment of arrival via a cheery greeting from Ruth and Neil, a most delightful basket of food & drink essentials and all the facilities one could wish for. The pool is child friendly and provides a perfect spot for chilling out with a book. The surrounding views are wonderful and great for a circular bike routes of any size due to no traffic and a good network of country lanes. Very usable bicycles are available free of charge at the property as well as cycle helmets. The nearby Montendre has good supermarkets and a good number of nice restaurants for its size. It has a wonderful night market during July and August which is not to be missed. The owners are both very welcoming, highly professional and thoughtful in their attention to detail and were very kind to invite us for a barbecue with another family staying at one of the gites. The property stayed cool and comfortable inside, even during the baking sun, and is kept to a high level of cleanliness and maintenance. I would have no hesitation to recommend this property to family and friends and hope to go back again. Thank you, Ruth and Neil.
Thank you for your kind comments, we loved having you stay with us. We have tried to use our own experience of gîte holidays to provide the things we always felt were missing and it's good to know we're doing the right thing (this being our first season). We're glad you were able to make use of the bikes too. We would love to see you again sometime!
