Just 2 minutes' drive (10 minutes' walk) into centre of Rye town. Large rear garden. Facilities: BBQ, kayak, table tennis, board games. Sleeps 10 in 5 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms (2 showers, 1 bath).

Our holiday home offers a quiet, idyllic getaway that will suit a group of friends or host an extended family get-together as it has 5 good-sized bedrooms (4 double and 1 twin) which sleep 10 and 3 bathrooms (2 ensuite, 2 showers, 1 bath). We are also dog-friendly -- furry friends very welcome!

Full description:

The semi-detached cottage is tucked away at the end of a private road. It has a gated parking area for up to 4 or 5 cars. The gated riverside area has a small garden, a decked area with outdoor bench and table, and a private pontoon where you can start off for a paddle down the river in our inflatable kayak.

Our holiday home has a secluded feel and is nestled between green fields and the River Brede, with the garden offering an unobstructed view – save for sheep dotted about the landscape! – across to Camber Castle.

The dining area is in the conservatory, alongside a cosy seating/living area. A second living room offers large comfy sofas, perfect for watching telly in the evening over a hot cup of cocoa. Step outside and enjoy a barbecue on the patio or play games in the rear large garden. There’s also table tennis provided or board games for those who prefer to be homebound or indoors. The kitchen is fully kitted with the usual mod cons: dishwasher, washing machine, toaster, microwave and a large fridge-freezer.

Castle Mill Cottages is the perfect spot for nature lovers, bird watchers, walkers, history aficionados, and sun-seekers. Beach goers will not be disappointed as Winchelsea Beach and Camber Sands are both within 10 minutes drive. For active types, there is a variety of water sports such as kite-surfing at Camber Sands.

The property is a mere 10 minutes walk (2 minutes drive) into the centre of the medieval Cinque Port town of Rye, a 5 minutes drive to Rye Harbour – voted Britain’s favourite nature reserve in 2016 – and a 20 minute walk across fields to Camber Castle straight from our front door. It is also the perfect base to explore 1066 Country, with Hastings and Battle only 30 minutes drive away, and other lovely spots from Winchelsea, Brede to Bodiam in half that.

We look forward to hosting you at Castle Mill Cottages and we hope you love our home as much as we do.

About Fran and Shiv

My partner and I are both historians. We love walks in nature, poking around antique shops and bookshops, and exploring historical sites. This holiday home is our (ad)venture into holiday letting.

Fran and Shiv purchased this cottage in 2017

Why Fran and Shiv chose Rye

Castle Mill Cottages has so much to offer. We love how it feels secluded, nestled between the River Brede and fields which lead to the nature reserve. You hardly see a soul go by, except for the occasional walker with her dog on the public bridle path. And Rye town is just a hop and a skip away, so it's very convenient for shopping. The interior of the cottage is airy and light-filled, with good-sized bedrooms, and has a charming conservatory so you can take in the garden and the fields beyond. Battle, Hastings, Winchelsea, and there are plenty of other charming towns and villages in between, are also within easy reach.

What makes this cottage unique

The view from the garden is so peaceful, with Camber Castle off in the distance and nothing but vast green fields in between. During lambing season, the farmer lets his sheep into the fields, and some of them graze along the perimeter of our garden fence; so you can see them up close and personal. The decking in the mooring area is a good size, and is kitted out with outdoor furniture so you can while away the hours watching the river flow by or the occasional duck paddling by.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had an absolutely fantastic stay in this gorgeous house. Enough space for two families - including one set of grandparents, so a wonderful venue for family occasions or a spacious house for a family holiday.

The house itself was beautifully decorated and perfectly clean, with enough entertainment within the house and gardens to keep children happy for days: table tennis, big garden for football, a wonderful inflatable canoe for trips on the river, lovely walks close by, great TV/sound equipment for rainy days... and the house even has its own pontoon on the river (which is also a beautiful sun-trap and perfect spot for barbecues).

It's in a very quiet spot, tucked away down a cute little country lane, but still in easy walking distance from Rye, so a lovely walk into town for dinner and drinks.

The owners have thought of everything, and the house is fully of lovely little conveniences, like condiments for cooking, ice-dispenser, ideal cooking supplies and appliances. Beautifully and thoughtfully furnished and decorated with local art and crafts - the house really was beautiful. Thank you. We will definitely be back! (From Trip Advisor 23 Aug 2017)

Fantastic property

  • 5 of 5

We were a family group of 6 adults and 2 children under 5. We stayed 5 nights and everything was perfect. You really only need to bring food and clothes. Everything else has been thought of for you. From good quality toiletries in every bathroom and by the kitchen sink, enough ingredients in the cupboards to make a blackberry crumble from the blackberries in the lane, children's and adults books and games, picnic packaging to table tennis and inflatable kayak with everything in good working order. Everywhere was beautifully clean and comfortable. Although we didn't meet Fran she welcomed us by text and was always available if we needed her. We could not fault this house. We would recommend organising an on-line delivery for food though as the nearest supermarket is 15mins drive and is very expensive. The pizza takeaway from Simply Italian in Rye is very good.

Would not hesitate to recommend this accommodation.

Highly recommended

  • 5 of 5

This cottage was ideal for our three-day getaway after 5 days in London. We were a group of 8 adults from the US on a family reunion trip to England. It was an easy walk into picturesque Rye with its shops and restaurants. Also an easy walk through the sheep fields to the Camber castle built by Henry VIII. The house is well appointed and well kept. The solarium adds needed room to the back, and we appreciated the large number of bedrooms. Communication with Fran and Shiv was clear, helpful, and timely. All in all, this cottage is highly recommended.

Lovely Rye Stay!

  • 5 of 5

My friends and I had a great time at Fran's place. She was easy to communicate with and the house was ready for us when we arrived a bit early. Rooms were clean and comfy with sun-blocking curtains for those you wanted them. The kitchen was clean and well stocked. We spent many hours in the solarium- even on hot days. We walked to town for shopping and dinner every night. I would definitely rebook!

Camber Castle and Rye Castle are a must for history buffs. For nature lovers, a must visit is Rye Harbour Nature Reserve with its mix of marshlands, shingle beach and various bird species. Or enjoy the sandy beaches of Camber Sands and engage in water sports like surfing.
