The village of Lower Slaughter is often the top destination recommended by tour guides when directing visitors to the Cotswolds. This quintessential English village is featured on travel documentaries, magazine covers and post cards throughout the world and has garnered numerous awards, including "Most Beautiful Village in England", "Most Beautiful Village in The Cotswolds", "Most Picturesque Towns & Villages in Gloucestershire" and "Most Romantic Street in Britain". River Cottage is the largest home at the center of the village in "The Square" on the banks of the River Eye. This beautiful home is unmatched both in terms of it's stunning, picturesque riverside setting as well as the huge variety of nearby amenities & activities, many within walking distance or a drive of 2 to 10 minutes. Don't be fooled by many other Cotswold listings - set in rural isolation, where you are forced to drive 10 minutes to reach a shop or pub. In contrast, from River Cottage you can stroll outside your front door past the ducks and swans on the river and host a children's paper boat race. Then at break time, 100 yards away you can visit the Old Mill for a cup of tea & scones, and maybe an ice cream cone for the paper boat race contestants (a double scoop for the winner). You can stop by the stables for a horse ride or take a 15 minute walk through the flower filled meadows, past grazing sheep to the sister village of Upper Slaughter, or walk along the river in the opposite direction in to Bourton-on-the-Water. From River Cottage there are multiple options for lunch, high tea, dinner or shopping, many within walking distance. The historic 14th century market town of Stow-on-the-Wold is a 5 minute drive, while Blenheim Palace, Sudeley Castle & Stratford-upon-Avon, Shakespeare’s birthplace, are also a short drive away. River Cottage consists of 4 combined structures, the earliest dating from the 1600's. For dining options, Upper & Lower Slaughter are home to the award winning "Lords of the Manor" restaurant, the grand "Slaughters Manor House" (a 5 minute walk) and "The Slaughters Country Inn" (a 2 minute walk, across the bridge over the River Eye) and a selection of lovely gastro-pubs are a few minutes drive away. The house has been fully refurbished from 2013-2017, has full cable TV in 3 locations, free wifi high speed fiber internet, and Sonos with a selection of global radio stations and music, providing a high level of comfort while maintaining Cotswold charm and the feeling of a bygone era. As owners we have an outstanding reputation on HomeAway. Please refer to our sister properties on Nantucket (off Cape Cod, near Boston) 3003175 and in Santa Monica, California 3516285. Our family spends time each year in every property to ensure it is maintained to the highest standards and exudes the warmth and comfort of a family home in some of the most stunning settings in England and the U.S.A.

Great property for our family and young children. It’s a great home away from home!
If you are staying in the Cotswolds with a bigger group this is the property for you. Easy day trips to many locations and a great spot to just relax! Our kids loved the shallow stream running through the village and ice cream at the old mill! There is also Cotswolds farm park about 3 miles away that is kid heaven! Robin and Caroline were both great hosts and got right back to us with any questions we had. We would definitely stay here again on our next trip.
Fabulous Cotswolds home and village!
This was a beautiful home that comfortably fit our family of 11. The village is absolutely picturesque and quiet, but with the ability to dine out. An easy walk to Bourton on the Water for additional restaurants and services. It exceeded out expectations, which were high!
Thanks for your lovely review Sheila, it was a pleasure to host you. We feel the house is perfect for extended families and we were so happy to hear that the home and village met your expectations.
We found the perfect place for a family vacation!
River Cottage was ideal for our three generation family of 8. The village is truly out of a storybook and the house is charming and very comfortable. The housekeeper greeted us on our arrival and was very helpful. There was also a house binder with useful information. The house has many spaces to relax and read, or gather as a group. The kitchen was modern and very well equipped. Although we found many delicious meals in nearby pubs and restaurants, our favorite meals were family picnics seated at the patio table in the private backyard with the beautiful garden. The cottage is right in the center of this picturesque village. The grandchildren felt that they'd walked into a fairy tale. We enjoyed visits to the mill and discovered wonderful walking paths starting in the village and heading out into the countryside. We also found Lower Slaughter the ideal location for exploring the Cotswolds by car. Quaint villages, castles and manors with gardens, Shakespeare, and rolling countryside were all in easy reach. Nothing is too far away and we found a nice balance of fun outings but with time to relax at the house. Although many tourists visit Lower Slaughter during the day, we loved the peacefulness, especially in the evening. We all found the beds comfortable and enjoyed a good nights sleep. The cottage has a great combination of historic charm and modern convenience. It really suited us well and we had wonderful vacation. Our family loves to travel and this trip will remain one of our favorites!
Hi Bob & Marianne, What a lovely, kind review. It was an absolute pleasure hosting your family. Given that you come from one of the most stunning villages in the world, I take your review as a wonderful complement. I hope we can host your family again in the future. Warm regards, Robin
This Cotswold stone house is in the centre of a picturesque village. The house itself is well decorated with good furniture many of which are antique. The kitchen facilities are excellent with everything you could possibly need. Plenty of cutlery and china and cooking utensils. The beds are extremely comfortable. The showers are very good with good quality towels. The local pub servers fresh well cooked food.
A lovely cottage, suitable for two families. Very well placed. Easy to get to.
A spur of the moment holiday that went way beyond our expectations.
Breathtaking scenery and lovely places to just walk around.
Highly reccomend the "River Cottage"!!!
Wonderful Family Home in a Story Book Setting
We just returned from 5 nights at the River Cottage. We had an amazing time in this home. The owner Robin is incredibly responsive to any pre-trip questions and requests, and the home could not be better suited for a family. We had 12 people (3 generations), and everyone was equally pleased with the home. The kitchen is well stocked with pots and pans to be able to cook great dinners (which we did 4 nights). There is a play room that was much loved by the kids. The fireplace in the main sitting room is great for warmth and atmosphere, but the heated floors throughout half of the communal areas is what really added to the coziness. The home was redone recently, and everything feels well done and well thought through. More importantly, the house is well situated in a gorgeous village and walkable to other towns.
We walked to Bourton-on-the-Water, and drove to Stow-on-the-Wold, Burford, Morton-on-Marsh, all within 5-15 minutes. Oxford is only 45 minutes away by car too. So, this is a great location for getting to explore the English countryside. Overall, we had a memorable stay in the Costwolds and would willingly rebook at Robin's home. Only thing to note for large groups: the dining area sits 8 (which worked for our group), and the kithcen island sits 4 (which was great for the kids). There is one room up two flights of stairs that is quite small and cozy, but it is up a steep staircase. So, if you have older or less mobile people that need that bedroom, it may be a challenge. Otherwise, everything is ideal. Thank you Robin and Caroline!
Thank you Hilary for your kind review, it was a pleasure hosting your family. For prospective future renters, to clarify, we have additional folding chairs that prior guests have used to seat 10 at the dining table, though it is tight. There is also an outdoor dining table (in the rear garden just outside the dining room) that can seat 8-10 + heating lamp, but that is not really appropriate for winter use. The steep stairs to which Hilary refers are up to the 2nd story attic bedroom/study which has a queen sofabed. I agree that it is not appropriate for the elderly or young children.
