The village of Lower Slaughter is often the top destination recommended by tour guides when directing visitors to the Cotswolds. This quintessential English village is featured on travel documentaries, magazine covers and post cards throughout the world and has garnered numerous awards, including "Most Beautiful Village in England", "Most Beautiful Village in The Cotswolds", "Most Picturesque Towns & Villages in Gloucestershire" and "Most Romantic Street in Britain". River Cottage is the largest home at the center of the village in "The Square" on the banks of the River Eye. This beautiful home is unmatched both in terms of it's stunning, picturesque riverside setting as well as the huge variety of nearby amenities & activities, many within walking distance or a drive of 2 to 10 minutes. Don't be fooled by many other Cotswold listings - set in rural isolation, where you are forced to drive 10 minutes to reach a shop or pub. In contrast, from River Cottage you can stroll outside your front door past the ducks and swans on the river and host a children's paper boat race. Then at break time, 100 yards away you can visit the Old Mill for a cup of tea & scones, and maybe an ice cream cone for the paper boat race contestants (a double scoop for the winner). You can stop by the stables for a horse ride or take a 15 minute walk through the flower filled meadows, past grazing sheep to the sister village of Upper Slaughter, or walk along the river in the opposite direction in to Bourton-on-the-Water. From River Cottage there are multiple options for lunch, high tea, dinner or shopping, many within walking distance. The historic 14th century market town of Stow-on-the-Wold is a 5 minute drive, while Blenheim Palace, Sudeley Castle & Stratford-upon-Avon, Shakespeare’s birthplace, are also a short drive away. River Cottage consists of 4 combined structures, the earliest dating from the 1600's. For dining options, Upper & Lower Slaughter are home to the award winning "Lords of the Manor" restaurant, the grand "Slaughters Manor House" (a 5 minute walk) and "The Slaughters Country Inn" (a 2 minute walk, across the bridge over the River Eye) and a selection of lovely gastro-pubs are a few minutes drive away. The house has been fully refurbished from 2013-2017, has full cable TV in 3 locations, free wifi high speed fiber internet, and Sonos with a selection of global radio stations and music, providing a high level of comfort while maintaining Cotswold charm and the feeling of a bygone era. As owners we have an outstanding reputation on HomeAway. Please refer to our sister properties on Nantucket (off Cape Cod, near Boston) 3003175 and in Santa Monica, California 3516285. Our family spends time each year in every property to ensure it is maintained to the highest standards and exudes the warmth and comfort of a family home in some of the most stunning settings in England and the U.S.A.

Exceeded our (high!) expectations
We had a wonderful stay in this gorgeous and cozy cottage on the river! We were looking for a good base for our two families (four adults and four children, three 5yos and a 3yo) to explore the Cotswolds, and River Cottage was perfect.
The house is beautifully done, with high-spec finishes and clean, comfortable furnishings. It’s even nicer than it looked in the photos! We had plenty of space to spread out, and for the girls to play, but the house still felt cozy and charming. The trampoline and play room were huge hits with our group!
The location is ideal for exploring. We did a beautiful walk through Lower Slaughter into Upper Slaughter, visited three other nearby villages for shopping, dining, etc., and loved getting out to Daylesford farm - all less than 15min drive away. Between that and Sudeley Castle and Blenheim Palace we were kept very busy.
Our hosts left us lots of good tips for restaurants and places to visit, and made us feel very welcome with some much-appreciated breakfast provisions waiting for us on arrival.
The cottage is the perfect country home we wish we had - we can’t recommend it highly enough!
A Lovely Home in A Beautiful Village
Our family group of 14 (three generations), had a wonderful week at River Cottage, this beautifully renovated classic Cotswold home, furnished and maintained to a very high standard of comfort and convenience. The central location made it easy to visit a number of outstanding attractions within an hour's drive, as well as walks to explore nearby villages. The layout of the cottage itself was very conducive to relaxation and group activities, including multiple family meals, games in the garden, etc., which we alternated with day-trips further afield. The owner and the caretaker were very responsive to questions and planning considerations, both before and during our stay. This property vastly exceeds any comparable alternative hotel accommodations, in both atmosphere and value.
Great property for our family and young children. It’s a great home away from home!
If you are staying in the Cotswolds with a bigger group this is the property for you. Easy day trips to many locations and a great spot to just relax! Our kids loved the shallow stream running through the village and ice cream at the old mill! There is also Cotswolds farm park about 3 miles away that is kid heaven! Robin and Caroline were both great hosts and got right back to us with any questions we had. We would definitely stay here again on our next trip.
Fabulous Cotswolds home and village!
This was a beautiful home that comfortably fit our family of 11. The village is absolutely picturesque and quiet, but with the ability to dine out. An easy walk to Bourton on the Water for additional restaurants and services. It exceeded out expectations, which were high!
Thanks for your lovely review Sheila, it was a pleasure to host you. We feel the house is perfect for extended families and we were so happy to hear that the home and village met your expectations.
We found the perfect place for a family vacation!
River Cottage was ideal for our three generation family of 8. The village is truly out of a storybook and the house is charming and very comfortable. The housekeeper greeted us on our arrival and was very helpful. There was also a house binder with useful information. The house has many spaces to relax and read, or gather as a group. The kitchen was modern and very well equipped. Although we found many delicious meals in nearby pubs and restaurants, our favorite meals were family picnics seated at the patio table in the private backyard with the beautiful garden. The cottage is right in the center of this picturesque village. The grandchildren felt that they'd walked into a fairy tale. We enjoyed visits to the mill and discovered wonderful walking paths starting in the village and heading out into the countryside. We also found Lower Slaughter the ideal location for exploring the Cotswolds by car. Quaint villages, castles and manors with gardens, Shakespeare, and rolling countryside were all in easy reach. Nothing is too far away and we found a nice balance of fun outings but with time to relax at the house. Although many tourists visit Lower Slaughter during the day, we loved the peacefulness, especially in the evening. We all found the beds comfortable and enjoyed a good nights sleep. The cottage has a great combination of historic charm and modern convenience. It really suited us well and we had wonderful vacation. Our family loves to travel and this trip will remain one of our favorites!
Hi Bob & Marianne, What a lovely, kind review. It was an absolute pleasure hosting your family. Given that you come from one of the most stunning villages in the world, I take your review as a wonderful complement. I hope we can host your family again in the future. Warm regards, Robin
This Cotswold stone house is in the centre of a picturesque village. The house itself is well decorated with good furniture many of which are antique. The kitchen facilities are excellent with everything you could possibly need. Plenty of cutlery and china and cooking utensils. The beds are extremely comfortable. The showers are very good with good quality towels. The local pub servers fresh well cooked food.
