Opulent Grade II Listed Cottage in 'Summer Wine' Country - Picturesque Views

Bedrooms 2
Space 699 sq. ft.
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

Originally a farmhouse cottage built around 1710, with 21stC interior.

Upper Hagg Cottage is a unique, quirky and cosy blend of ancient (Grade II Listed) and modern interior cottage in the heart of 'Last of the Summer Wine' country within easy reach of major attractions.

It is not really suited to children, having some hazards, including an open suspended staircase, some 'industrial type' open grill flooring in the lounge and large expanses of glass including the dining table. However, it provides the perfect romantic getaway, or retreat for two couples. Though you should be aware that though the two bedrooms are on different floors, the main bedroom does not have a door between it and the first floor living room.

Experience all the comforts of home and more; induction hob, dishwasher, underfloor heating, wood-burner stove, Wi-Fi broadband... Both bedrooms have en-suite wet-room facilities.

Enjoy al fresco dining on our elevated patio.

About Drew & Barb McCormick

Barb & Drew are a retired couple who bought Upper Hagg Cottage as a 'close by' occasional retreat for ourselves and family and we have been so blessed and love it so much we want to share this idyll with others. Drew retired from a role in Quality Consultancy in 2009 after a serious motorcycle accident and Barb, though officially retired, is busy household(s) manager and grandmother to five!

Drew & Barb McCormick purchased this cottage in 2017

Why Drew & Barb McCormick chose Huddersfield

Whilst originally from Liverpool, Barb & Drew migrated to Huddersfield when first married and fell in love with the Holme valley because of hills and valleys, quaint stone built houses and the fact that you can be in the centre of an urban area and yet only 5 minutes from some beautiful green and open spaces because of the geography and geology of the area.

What makes this cottage unique

Upper Hagg Cottage is a reflection of the juxtaposition of proximity of town and rural location in microcosm. A cottage that reflects a 300 year old heritage with exposed beams and millstone grit stonework with 21st C facilities of gas central heating, underfloor electric heating, two Grohe equipped wet-rooms along with a suspended staircase and excellent furnishings.

You will love it too.

Beautiful property for a relaxing stay near the Peaks

  • 5 of 5

We had such a lovely stay in this stunning cottage. It was cosy and homely while being spacious and luxurious too.

Every detail was taken care of by our hosts, who even arranged the farmer to drop us fresh milk and bread on our first morning.

Couldn't have hoped for more for our sunny bank holiday weekend away.

What a find!

  • 5 of 5

A really stunning cottage, a good example of what can be achieved with an imaginative architect ! Everything inside the cottage is high spec, well designed and laid out. The views were incredible from the front and on the terrace at the back. yes there are a couple of cottages either side and the owners we met were friendly. "Ow do!" is the customary way to say hello in these parts! Nearby you have the lovely towns of Holmfirth and Halifax, stately homes galore and scenic drives in every direction you can point your car at. We chose a wet and windy weekend in November, however every evening we looked forward to putting our feet up in front of the cosy log burner and watching the stormy clouds pass by over the stunning valley the cottage was set in. Needless to say we will be back and to be honest, partly due to the price of the cottage, for what you get its incredibly reasonably priced! So, good points that mattered to us were Two parking spaces with the cottage, two bathrooms, shower that ran off the combi boiler, wood burning stove, hi spec kitchen, comfortable beds. So, what are you waiting for, book it whilst you still can!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind comments Sue. All our guests write gushing reviews about our exceptional and unique cottage. The rural setting sets it off to best advantage too. Our first year of operation is proving to be both enjoyable and very very busy! If you want to escape from life's tensions and relax in luxurious accommodation in the beautiful Pennine hills, book soon. Bookings for July 2018 already being taken!

Very comfortable home from home

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is beautifully decorated and very efficiently laid out to give maximum space. There were 4 of us, all adults, and the cottage was big enough to give us space. The kitchen was a pleasure to cook in with lots of the basics provided by Drew and Barb. The cottage was very warm and the beds were very comfortable. The location is very scenic. We would definitely stay here again.

This is a superbly comfortable cottage, furnished and equipped to an extremely high standard and immaculately clean. Wonderfully peaceful rural location, yet only minutes away from local shops and facilities. We thoroughly enjoyed our 4 night stay and left completely chilled-out, which was the whole idea! Thank you so much for our wonderful stay.

An alluring synthesis of old and new

  • 5 of 5

The smart traditional exterior of this charming cottage on the grounds of a dairy farm belies the modern high-tech bright interior within. The hosts have thought of everything and nothing is too much trouble. We were welcomed with fresh bread, butter and milk and a spacious host of rooms which supplied maps/games/books and even a printer which came in very handy for our daily explorations. The lounge area is upstairs, providing glorious views over the farmland and fields beyond and whilst you are greeted with beautiful old beams and exposed brickwork, the furniture is modern and comfortable for a relaxing evening after a day out visiting the many attractions that these stunning environs have to offer. We would strongly recommend a visit to this lovely enclave of Yorkshire which was made all the more enjoyable having such a truly charming base to fully relax in.

The iconic Tour de France passed by (within 800 metres) in 2014. The local area featured in the long running 'Last of the Summer Wine' series and Holmfirth was, for many years, the home of saucy seaside postcard publishers 'Bamforths'. A pub on the Woodhead Rd still carries the name, "The Postcard".

Holmfirth has some amazing nooks and crannies with cobbled streets to explore. Other 'must see' locations include Castle Hill (Huddersfield), Saltaire village (Bradford) and the Halifax 'Piece Hall'.
