Overview

About the property

House, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-4)

Located 75 min. north of Santa Fe, Abiquiu Lake Casita is far from highways and noise, but for the sounds of birds and wind.

Our casita (small house) is set on 13.5 acres on top of one of the highest mesas overlooking Abiquiu Lake, with unlimited 360 degree views north toward the lake and Ghost Ranch and south towards the Jemez Mountains and Cerro Pedernal, the 10,000 foot flat-topped mountain that Georgia O'Keeffe loved to paint, making the mountain into an icon of northern New Mexico. Historically, Pedernal is a sacred site for Native Americans and local inhabitants.

You can soak your body in a luxurious HOT TUB after a day of hiking, reading, painting, or writing. Our casita was designed in the traditional adobe style, including a Kiva wood- burning fireplace (wood provided), pine hand-hewn vigas that help support the ceiling; tile floors with radiant heating; and thick walls to hold the warmth in winter and keep you cool in summer, walls hand-plastered in the adobe style; and Mexican antique furniture.

We added modern comfort throughout, including a modern and well-stocked kitchen, local art and track lighting on dimmers, and a spacious great room with a Mexican dining table that can be expanded with 3 leaves for art or writing projects.

To take advantage of the long and wide views across the valleys, we built two 'portales' (covered porches). You can dine on the north side while gazing down the valley and across the lake towards the red cliffs of Ghost Ranch, or you can bask in the warmth of the sun--even in winter--on the southern portale, as you look towards the Jemez Mountains and Pedernal. Both portales are furnished with a comfortable outdoor dining set. There's also a recliner and new gas BBQ.

Since there are no city lights to compete, billions of stars fill the night sky, part of the magic of New Mexico. Our favorite time for the hot tub is at night, gazing at the Milky Way and galaxies, frequently punctuated by numerous shooting stars; when it's not dark, moonlight bathes the rolling hills and desert floor.

Gentle warning: The views, the far off patterns of changing weather, and the warm coziness of the casita may make it difficult to leave the casita at all.

Abiquiu Lake Casita was featured in New Mexico Magazine, November, 2011.

We live in Santa Fe and are available to our guests by the hour.

We're located in an area called Piedra Lumbre, or Shining Stone, which you reach by taking Hwy. 84 past the town of Abiquiu for six miles, then turning west on Highway 96.

About Scott Oury

We are former college English teachers who simply love the southwest. We live in Santa Fe.

Scott Oury purchased this house in 2000

Why Scott Oury chose New Mexico

Having been in love with the southwest for a long time, we found this site in 2000 and it was more beautiful than any of the places we had seen--or have seen since-- during our travels throughout this extraordinary part of the country.

What makes this house unique

Peace, quiet, relaxation, endless views and walks, time to read and be creative. After that, we explore the villages, cultures and wilderness in and beyond Abiquiu.

High Desert Retreat

  • 5 of 5

The house sits under the spell of the Pedernal Mountain, a spiritual mountain in the area. My family loved the wildlife we witnessed including prairie dogs , jack rabbits, and coyotes. One sunrise there was the sound of an Indian flute and chants drifting up from the lake area. The house is very comfortable and sunrise and sunset simply breathtaking every single day. As a student at the Ghost Ranch it was a wonderful retreat from the sparse ranch accommodations, but it is a 30 minute trip back and forth. The kitchen really is well stocked in cooking supplies for a rental house. For a rural setting the internet and television connections excellent. Loved the daily visit from the neighbor's poodles.

Easy to visit Taos and Santa Fe for day trips.

Beautiful birthday weekend with a Rattlesnake visit

  • 3 of 5

We stayed at the Casita for 4 nights. The views are definitely amazing. The peace & quiet was nice. We enjoyed relaxing on the porches & watching the sunset from the hot tub in the evening. The house was extremely comfortable & had everything we needed. We did have a rattlesnake come visit on the last night we were there, which honestly ruined it for me. We were outside grilling at the time. It was coiled up, near the table, rattling at us. We retreated inside & watched it thru the glass. The rattlesnake hung out on the porch for awhile, eventually making it's way over to the grill, where it stayed for some time. We were very nervous about going outside after seeing it, but had to because the grill was still on & our dinner was burning. I messaged the owner a couple days ago, but I have yet to hear back.

Owner's Response: We get a rattlesnake on one the patios about once each year or two. I noted that in the Information package, and since it's the high desert, that guest should be aware. Of course it's never a pleasant experience, and can be scary. I'm sorry you had to go through it, and especially sorry that it ruined you stay. Scott (owner)

Amazing, relaxing, PEACEFUL Abiquiu retreat!

  • 5 of 5

Honestly, words cannot express how amazing this place is. We have booked several properties through Home Away, and this is one of our top favorites. I know how it can sometimes be worrisome when booking a rental- you may ask yourself, "Is it really as nice as the pictures look?" "Are the reviews genuine?" I always ask myself those questions when booking, but rest assured, this place is everything the descriptions and reviews depict and more. Coming from the midwest, I am used to wide-open spaces, but to see a wide-open space with Abuquiu Lake, Ghost Ranch and Cerro Pedernal in the backdrop is AMAZING! The peace and solitude at all times- day or night- is simply breathtaking. I loved having breakfast outside and listening to and watching the birds and other critters (my husband and I are birders, and the Casita has bird feeders, including a hummingbird feeder, and a bird bath, so we felt right at home) and I think what I loved most was the peace at night. I don't think I've ever experienced such quiet. The Casita itself is very charming. It has that Southwest feeling we were looking for. It has all the cooking utensils we needed and then some. All features of the home were very comfortable- the bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and living room layouts were nice. They also have a great book, movie and CD collection.

As far as the area is concerned- we had planned on staying at the Casita and then travelling to Taos and Santa Fe for day trips (hiking, birding) and we thought that Ghost Ranch trails would be heavily traveled. However, when we got to Abiquiu we realized how much there is to do in the area and that Ghost Ranch (at least during the weekdays in early May) was not filled with other hikers (we saw one other person off in the distance.) We did not venture far out of Abiquiu at all! Ghost Ranch is amazing and a must-see. We had such little interaction with other people that it really truly was a relaxing getaway. So if you are looking for peace, solitude, relaxation and connecting with nature, this is THE place to go. We definitely plan to return!
