Photos and Description of this 1 bedroom holiday home in Youngsville - Abiquiu Lake Casita

House, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-4)

Located 75 min. north of Santa Fe, Abiquiu Lake Casita is far from highways and noise, but for the sounds of birds and wind.

Our casita (small house) is set on 13.5 acres on top of one of the highest mesas overlooking Abiquiu Lake, with unlimited 360 degree views north toward the lake and Ghost Ranch and south towards the Jemez Mountains and Cerro Pedernal, the 10,000 foot flat-topped mountain that Georgia O'Keeffe loved to paint, making the mountain into an icon of northern New Mexico. Historically, Pedernal is a sacred site for Native Americans and local inhabitants.

You can soak your body in a luxurious HOT TUB after a day of hiking, reading, painting, or writing. Our casita was designed in the traditional adobe style, including a Kiva woodburning fireplace (wood provided), pine hand-hewn vigas that help support the ceiling; tile floors with radiant heating; and thick walls to hold the warmth in winter and keep you cool in summer, walls hand-plastered in the adobe style; and Mexican antique furniture.

We added modern comfort throughout, including a modern and well-stocked kitchen, local art and track lighting on dimmers, and a spacious great room with a Mexican dining table that can be expanded with 3 leaves for art or writing projects.

To take advantage of the long and wide views across the valleys, we built two 'portales' (covered porches). You can dine on the north side while gazing down the valley and across the lake towards the red cliffs of Ghost Ranch, or you can bask in the warmth of the sun--even in winter--on the southern portale, as you look towards the Jemez Mountains and Pedernal. Both portales are furnished with a comfortable outdoor dining set. There's also a recliner and new gas BBQ.

Since there are no city lights to compete, billions of stars fill the night sky, part of the magic of New Mexico. Our favorite time for the hot tub is at night, gazing at the Milky Way and galaxies, frequently punctuated by numerous shooting stars; when it's not dark, moonlight bathes the rolling hills and desert floor.

Gentle warning: The views, the far off patterns of changing weather, and the warm coziness of the casita may make it difficult to leave the casita at all.

Abiquiu Lake Casita was featured in New Mexico Magazine, November, 2011.

We live in Santa Fe and are available to our guests by the hour.

We're located in an area called Piedra Lumbre, or Shining Stone, which you reach by taking Hwy. 84 past the town of Abiquiu for six miles, then turning west on Highway 96.

About Scott Oury

Cassie and Conner are more photogenic than we are.

We are former college English teachers who simply love the southwest. We live in Santa Fe.

Scott Oury purchased this house in 2000

Why Scott Oury chose New Mexico

Having been in love with the southwest for a long time, we found this site in 2000 and it was more beautiful than any of the places we had seen--or have seen since-- during our travels throughout this extraordinary part of the country.

What makes this house unique

Peace, quiet, relaxation, endless views and walks, time to read and be creative. After that, we explore the villages, cultures and wilderness in and beyond Abiquiu.

High Desert Retreat

  • 5 of 5

The house sits under the spell of the Pedernal Mountain, a spiritual mountain in the area. My family loved the wildlife we witnessed including prairie dogs , jack rabbits, and coyotes. One sunrise there was the sound of an Indian flute and chants drifting up from the lake area. The house is very comfortable and sunrise and sunset simply breathtaking every single day. As a student at the Ghost Ranch it was a wonderful retreat from the sparse ranch accommodations, but it is a 30 minute trip back and forth. The kitchen really is well stocked in cooking supplies for a rental house. For a rural setting the internet and television connections excellent. Loved the daily visit from the neighbor's poodles.

Easy to visit Taos and Santa Fe for day trips.

Silence, solitude, comfort, amazing beauty.

  • 5 of 5

I have nothing but superlatives for this perfect little casita and the experience of being in silence on the mesa! With Abiquiu Lake, Ghost Ranch and so many other adventures just a few minutes away, there's plenty to do. But it's hard to beat just sitting on one of the two patios listening to the silence, the wind, the birds and the occasion coyote call. I loved the trail ride at Ghost Ranch. Great way to be in the land that inspired Georgia O'Keefe and see the rocks and views that she painted. My 4-wheel drive rental definitely helped my peace of mind coming up the curves to the mesa, and for some of the other off-road/dirt road drives in the area.

Thank you, Scott and Glynn, for making this treasure of a place available. I'm checking my calendar now for 2017!

Beautiful and peaceful!

  • 5 of 5

We spent three days at Abiquiu Lake Casita for our mini honeymoon and could have stayed another ten. It was the perfect place to relax after the excitement of a fun wedding week! The casita had everything we needed: lots of space to cook and relax, a fun book selection, grill, tv for watching the Olympics (!), and views in all directions. The hot tub was the icing on the cake. We will definitely plan an anniversary trip some time in the future!

A wonderful casita

  • 5 of 5

This is a wonderful place to stay with superb scenery all around and a gorgeous (fairly isolated) casita equipped to the highest standard. The hot tub with stupendous views is wonderful. The Humming Birds are also great to see. The owners have created a little paradise here. This is our second visit and we look forward to returning.

Amazing/clean/well appointed

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay! The casita was the perfect size with all the features and amenities you could want and a view to die for. Everything was clean and beautiful. It did get very hot mid day and until nightfall when it was cool enough to open the windows and let the some cool breeze in. The house did have a couple of table fans that we set up in the bedroom so we could sleep comfortable and we just planned to be away from the house during the hottest part of the day so we wouldn't get grumpy because of the heat in the house. Overall it was a wonderdul experience and we hope to come back in years to come!!

Owner's Response: We welcome your return! HINT on how to keep the casita very cool even when we have a heat wave (It's a dry heat): The beautiful thing about the dry heat of NM and being surrounded by mountains is that as soon as the sun goes down, the temperature drops significantly. So open the windows at night, use overhead fans to move the air, and keep the windows (or a few of them) open all night as we do, and THEN CLOSE THE WINDOWS BY 8:00 - 9:00AM. CLOSING THE WINDOWS by 9 in the morning KEEPS THE COOL AIR IN. THE THICK WALLS REMAIN COOL INSIDE. If you don't like the idea of all the windows being open all night (it's very safe), that's ok, there is an upper awning window and even other small windows you can leave open. OR just open the windows very early in the AM But close them by 8 or 9AM & leave them closed until sundown. Outside on the two patios, it is lovely in the shade when there is the slightest breeze. And, as these guests did, make mid-day your time to see the amazing sights of the area.
