About Mrs Rosie Nicholls

We live in the Welsh Marches and first holidayed in Swaledale 10 years ago, we fell in love with the dale, it's people and the warmth of their welcome, the stunning scenery and it's beautiful places. We have been coming back regularly ever since and were lucky enough to purchase Throstle Nest Barn. We feel the luckiest people every time we arrive to think that we own such a wonderful house in such a beautiful setting and we feel happy to share our special place with you.

Our dog Monty enjoys the freedom of the two acre stone walled paddock in which the barn is situated, chasing bunnies, although these Yorkshire rabbits are too clever for him! He also loves having balls thrown for him from the bench at the top of our field with what we feel is the best view of the dale.

Why Mrs Rosie Nicholls chose Richmond

To us it is the perfect place to relax away from our busy working lives, Throstle Nest Barn being high up on the fell side with glorious views of the river Swale flowing down dale gives it a peaceful location with only the birds and sheep for company most of the time. The silence can almost be deafening and is often only broken by the call of a curlew, the bleat of a lamb or the river flowing down stream. Although appearing remote it is only a mile to the village of Gunnerside or Low Row where delicious food can be obtained from very good pubs or tea rooms or just a couple of miles up dale will take you to a warm welcome at the Farmers Arms in Muker. If you're very lucky you may see the Northern Lights out of the kitchen window a lucky guest did last February.

What makes this cottage unique

After arriving a car is no longer necessary, walk from the door, high onto the remoteness of the fell, through pretty villages or along the river passing through the glorious wild flower meadows. Take a walk through history up Gunnerside Gill viewing the relics of the lead mining industry. Bring your bicycles, there are miles of off road trails to explore or follow the route of 2014's Tour De France. A short walk would lead you to a wonderful days fishing on the Swale and if that isn't enough there are plenty of places to visit, Leyburn a lovely market town full of a wide range of independent shops, Hawes the home of Wensleydale cheese, the favourite of Wallace & Gromit, with plenty to tempt your tastebuds. Follow in the footsteps of James Herriot...... All Creatures Great and Small....

Beautiful cottage that wants for nothing.

  • 5 of 5

We have been visiting the Dales for the last 25 years and Throstle Nest Barn is a real find. For me it is perfection. Beautifully equipped and thoughtfully styled accommodation set in the most wonderful location. The field and garden are a real bonus and for a whole week we never used the car to get to the start of walks. Everything we did was straight from the door including Gunnerside Gill and over to the Old Gang Mines. A wonderful weeks holiday and we would highly recommend Throstle Nest Barn to anybody. We will be back again.

Owner's Response: We are so pleased you enjoyed Throstle Nest Barn so much. We strive to make the cottage cosy and comfortable and it's so nice to find our efforts appreciated (and yes, Swaledale is so beautiful and we're lucky the Throstle Nest Barn is set in such a wonderful location). Thank-you also for leaving the cottage so very clean and tidy. Please do return! Rosie, owner, and Judith, manager.

Wonderful, warm, clean and cosy. Large secure field for the dogs, we had no worries.

It was lovely to stay in a property where everything worked as it should. The multi fuel stove was wonderful as the weather turned very cold. We had everything we needed for a lovely holiday and would definitely go back again.

Lovely

  • 5 of 5

The accommodation is very clean, well organised and tastefully decorated. The kitchen is well equipped but could do with brighter lighting. The house is warm. Wifi is handy.

There are long walks from the cottage doorstep without using the car. The view is good from the window. We didn't sit outside as it was cold and snowy but, in spring/summer, it would be lovely to have breakfast or teabreaks on the patio.
