Welcome to our 'home from home' in Andalusia! Cueva Sonrisa is a lovely 2 storey cave house situated in Galera, described as one of the prettiest village in this area of Spain. Unique to our cave is the upstairs balcony off the master bedroom, where you can enjoy views over the valley and across to Sagra, the largest mountain in southern Andalusia. This is 'real Spain', where you are far from the high rise tourist areas of the Costas and the pace of life is relaxed and unhurried.

About Fran Turner
We live in England with our lovely rescue dog Lady, now our two grown-up children have flown the nest. When we were looking for a home from home, we were intrigued by the idea of cave houses, so decided to explore this different option to the norm. When we first saw our new home, it was simply 3 large rooms hewn into the hillside, so we were able to have an input in the remodelling process, which included double glazing, cavity wall insulation and the first cave to benefit from proper drawers in the kitchen! We love the idea that parts of our home are hundreds of years old, and have a real history, but now benefit from simple comforts of modern day life If you, like us, want to escape the fast pace of modern life for a little while, our lovely home in Galera awaits your arrival!
Fran Turner purchased this House in 2004
Why Fran Turner chose Galera
We fell in love with the peace and beauty of the Altiplano area of Andalusia, where you will be treated to 360 degree views of the surrounding Sierras and across to Sagra, the highest mountain in this area of Spain. The pace of life is relaxed and informal here, in the 'real Spain', which has not been touched by the mass tourism on the Costas. Access to this area of Spain is via quiet, well maintained roads.
What makes this House unique
From Galera, it is possible to explore unspoiled Sierras, lakeside activities, swimming in natural pools, walking, biking and birdwatching, just to mention a few! Griffin vultures and eagles can often be seen lazily circling overhead in the clear blue skies. You can spend your days walking and exploring, or lazing on the patio or on the balcony (yes - this cave has an upstairs with a balcony off the master bedroom!). The lovely village of Galera is a short 10 minute walk down the hillside, where a selection of local shops, bars, restaurants and a couple of small supermarkets can be found.

Really impressed with our "Cave". Every amenity we needed and the views were spectacular.
I would definitely recommend this "Cave" and Galera. The cave had everything we needed and the little welcome pack waiting for us was much appreciated as we arrived at midnight. The cave was cool at night in the extremely hot temperatures so we all slept so well as the area is so peaceful too. The village of Galera feels very undiscovered but the locals are very friendly and the prices of their food and drink are so reasonable There are many beautiful views and lots to do and see too. The owners left a folder full of information which we used every day to discover something new. Don't be put off by the drive from Murcia airport as the roads are quiet and everything is well sign posted. Can't wait to go back!
Thank you so much for your lovely review, Debbie! We try very hard to make the cave a 'home from home' for our guests so glad you enjoyed your stay. We look forward to welcoming you back again!
A beautiful village with a wonderful house.
Delighted!! There is no better word to describe our stay, the treatment was lovely, and when we got to the house we were already fascinated, We had a welcome kit with some things to eat, the beautiful house, the only thing was that the TV did not pick up signal but we had films!! The town is also beautiful, without doubt next year the safest thing we will repeat.
My family and I recommend it 100%!
Thanks for everything Fran!
Many thanks for your lovely review, Ana. I'm delighted you enjoyed your stay and look forward to welcoming you back in the future! Fran
Cueva Sonrisa - An absolute gem of a home with chilled out surroundings and stunning views.
What an amazing holiday experience. Our first impression was the scene of beauty of the surrounding mountain and valley of cave houses from what would be our front door for the next fortnight. The Turner home did not disappoint, attention to detail was perfect, the home is like a treasure trove, a home from home, absolutely everything you thought you needed on holiday is there, the cave itself is fully contained ( even down to the fly swats which amused Scarlett for hours on end, fascinated by wasps, jump hoppers (crickets), ladybirds and ants) so thank-you Fran. We were sure we would have to go out and do a big shop straight away but our greeting of supplies including a lovely bottle of local red wine allowed us time to chill, explore and settle in after a lovely though long drive from Malaga airport. (Would recommend Granada airport). We hit Galera during a heatwave so the cool rooms in the cave were perfect to stave of the intense heat for our family including our young pale skinned granddaughter, Scarlett but we found we were just happy to relax in our surroundings and not have to travel too far even though we had the hire car. The local public swimming pool and adjoining Hotel Galera owned by Jack and Alicia included one of the 3 local restaurants which were ample during our stay, all food was freshly cooked, real Spanish tapas, freshly made with every drink. The highlight of the Galera year is the 5 day Fiesta in August so we were able to enjoy partying with the locals and savour real Spanish community and family time. Flamenco, live bands, blues, local religious tradition and lots more. They certainly know how to throw a party.
We did some touring around in the local villages of Orce, Huescar, Cullar though Galera just did it for us. We met a good few of the surrounding neighbours and though it's almost all Spanish speaking we even learnt a bit of Spanish, there are some UK neighbours who have made their homes in Galera, oh how I envy them, but having knowledge of respect and protocols from them enabled us to follow custom and hopefully treated the area with respect to the satisfaction of the Galerans.
Finally I wish Fran and her family many happy years of renting this beautiful character cave home and thank her once again for having us, we hope to come back again if she'll have us and I don't think you can get better recommendation than that.
Best wishes from Lucia, on behalf of the Collins family, Northern Ireland. xxx
Thank you for your lovely review, Lucia - always great to hear when guests have had a good holiday and makes our 'little touches' worthwhile. Of course we would welcome you back to our cave with open arms and hope to hear from you in the future! Fran
Perfect holidays in a perfect place!
Though I travel a lot, this was one of my best holidays ever. The case-house is charming and cosy , very well equipped and the views are just amazing, so as all the area. I've been there with my husband and two kids - 7 and 8 and we all just loved everything during this stay. The house has 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a living room and a kitchen. All made in stone, so it has this special character and, what's important in Spain during summer - it's nicely cool. The owner thought about everything - there is a tv, wi-fi, cd and dvd player. Towels, table games, sunbeds, it's everything there. Galera village is less then 10 minutes walk - but it's a nice walk, through climatic streets. The village is also really nice and people are friendly. There is a public swimming pool in the village, surrounded with a small park. Galera also offers few restaurants and shops. If you want to feel a real Spain, you love nature and iddylic views, if you don't fancy crowded and touristic places and if you want to rest, you'll love the place. We don't usually go to same destination two times, but I think we will make an exception with this one...
We're so glad you enjoyed your stay and look forward to your next visit! We love our cave and Galera/surrounding area so glad you did too!
Many thanks for your lovely review, Dorothea! I agree it gets very hot in the middle of summer and this year we’ve had a heatwave as well! Nevertheless I’m delighted you found the cave remained cool and comfortable for you. We look forward to welcoming you back to our lovely area again soon! Fran
Galera is around 1.5 hours drive from the beaches of Almeria, but closer to home is Lake Negratin (40 mins drive), with beach front bar/restaurant, and a variety of water sports on offer. There is also a free spring fed swimming pool 10 minutes away from the cave on the road to Orce, where you can swim with fishes all year round! The large pool in Galera is open during the summer months.
Car hire is essential to explore the delights of the surrounding area and sierras.
Galera is situated under 2 hours from the airports of Murcia and Almeria, about 1.5 hours from Granada airport, and 2.5 hours from Alicante.
Huescar - 10 minutes drive
Baza - 25 minutes drive
Granada (Alhambra) - 1.5 hours drive
Lake Negratin - 40 mins drive
Sierra Nevada (skiing) - 1.45 hours drive
This corner of Spain was one of the first to be inhabited by man (claims surrounding the earliest remains of man being found here abound!). Stone age and neolithic sites can be found nearby (Tutugi site just outside the village), as well as remains of a Roman encampment on the hill above Galera.
Birdwatchers and walkers also love the area, with the wealth of surrounding Sierras, and colonies of griffin vultures and eagles being regularly spotted circling overhead.
Galera has a couple of small supermarkets, butchers, bakers and a few friendly bars and restaurants. A market is held in the village square every Wednesday where fresh, local produce can be purchased and gossip exchanged!
Fiestas are a regular event,in the area where traditional celebrations and re-enactments have been unchanged for hundreds of years.
Further afield, the wonderful Alhambra and gypsy quarter in Granada is around 1 hr 15 mins from Galera and there are a vast sierras with a multitude of walking and hiking opportunities within easy reach of the cave.
