About Vanessa Roots
We are a forty something couple who have a passion for property and interiors. Most of our time is spent researching, designing and making either furniture for our properties or designing their interiors. We spend a lot of time doing hand on jobs ourselves, its not often you won't find us with a paintbrush or sander in our hands, its what we do to relax, we do enjoy it so much. We love creating relaxing, calming, beautiful spaces to spend time in. The trouble is we never sit still long enough in any of them to make full use of them. Instead we have decided to share the homes on Owners Direct with you, so you can enjoy these spaces aswell. We really hope you enjoy spending time in them as much as we did creating them! Please be sure to check out our other property, a beautiful stone Masters House in rural Brittany, France just 20 minutes from the beautiful Crozon Peninsular with its amazing beaches; http://www.ownersdirect.co.uk/accommodation/p8160881

Why Vanessa Roots chose Colchester
We were brought up in rural Essex, so having lived in London for work for a few years we soon found ourselves missing the Essex coastline. We decided to look for a weekend home to escape from London and to spend more time with our friends and family. So the search began.. Having looked at other outlying villages in our part of Essex, we soon found that Mersea Island was the place for us. Although growing up only a stones throw from Mersea, we never fully appreciated it growing up. So when we found Crabtree Cottage in its amazing location, we soon realised we'd found a real gem in both this cottage and in Mersea Island. It really has its own charm. Mersea Island is a special and unique place that enchants you from your very first visit, you'll want to return time and time again.
What makes this Cottage unique
The many benefits of Crabtree Cottage include its secluded position down a long private driveway hidden from view. Even life-long Islanders have never heard of our location until they visit; we are so hidden away. However despite its secluded spot, the cottage is only a moments walk from the Anchorage part of the village, where the many Sailing Clubs, Pubs and Restaurants allow you to enjoy the coastal life! Venture out from the bottom of the garden and you can walk along the sea wall all the way round the Island should you so wish! Or just a few minutes round the corner is West Mersea's Monkey Beach. Just a 10 minute walk to the village centre allows access to all the amenities you could want. Once you've arrived no need to use the car, just leave it at home on the driveway! Perfect

Lovely cosy cottage in an excellent location
Great break away, within minutes walk to the sea and seafood restaurants, pubs and village.
Beautiful cottage in Mersea
We had a fabulous stay in Vanessa's cottage in West Mersea. Ideally located for the village and restaurants but still tranquil and secluded. The cottage itself is wonderfully furnished, very well equipped and more spacious than anticipated. Would highly recommend.
That's lovely to hear and pleased it was bigger than anticipated. Its true the cottage is a bit of a tardis, it is much bigger on the inside than it looks from the outside!
Our stay at Crabtree Cottage
We real enjoyed our stay at the cottage. It was very cosy and warm - everything worked, plenty of hot water. We loved the location - we did a lot of walking around the coastline which was virtually on the doorstep and enjoyed watching a few intrepid sailors going out when the weather cleared. It was good to be able to walk down the lane to the friendly pub and to eat in one of the two seafood shacks. A good holiday - thank you.
So pleased to hear of another happy holiday at Crabtree Cottage. Its nice to hear of people enjoying it just as much in winter as in summer time.
Beautiful cottage in a delightful location
We enjoyed a lovely stay at this cottage and would be happy to recommend it to anyone considering a trip to West Mersea.
The cottage itself is bursting with character. A charming property that has all of the characteristics of an old home but that is actually a very good size and allows you to be comfortable throughout the stay.
The bedrooms, lounge and kitchen are all of a good size and even on a rainy day, we felt that we had plenty of space. The house is well equipped and close to shops so that you can pick up groceries as needed.
The back garden and decking area is wonderful - such a lovely view and so peaceful, you could enjoy a very pleasant afternoon there.
The town itself is lovely. Fish restaurants aplenty, every place we visited was full of friendly people and friendly dogs, and we enjoyed eating out twice at different places.
We would thoroughly recommend the cottage and the town, and we'll be back in the future I'm sure. Thanks also to Vanessa, the host, who was very quick to answer any questions we had before, during and after the stay.
This is an old, quirky property. If you like everything immaculate, then it isn’t for you, but if you like somewhere homely with the sort of sofas you can snooze on that feels like you might have borrowed it from relaxed friends, then it’s great. The location is good - walking distance to boats, pub and shops but absolutely quiet at night with a lovely view of the sunset. We had a great long weekend doing nothing much on West Mersea. Both island and house are dog friendly - and people-friendly too! We’d recommend taking out kayaks to see the place from the water; getting pizzas from Cowabunga after playing beach cricket, and trying the very good sausages and granary bread from the butcher and bakery respectively.
Lovely to hear of people enjoying the cottage as much as we do.
We stayed at the property on a hot weekend in June and we couldn’t ask for more. Really home from home. We will be staying again.
Already a second visit for these guests and they are hoping to return again! That’s always so good to hear when people want to come back many times!
Thanks for coming again and we hope to see you once again very soon! You’re welcome any time.
