About Neil Hassall
Architect and Design.
Why Neil Hassall chose Colonia Azteca
A unique Contemporary house designed by Neil Hassall with town and country views. Located a 5 minute walk to the local market and 10 minutes to the main square and other historic attractions, local restaurants, shops and artisan market is around the corner. Enjoy the spectacular natural pool in the lush private gardens. Natural Swimming Pool. The pool is kept fresh, clean and healthy by use of an infinity edge that drops the water through the air, thereby oxygenating it, into a constantly moving body of water which incorporates living plants, gravel filters and sand beds. The water is then moved up to solar panels before descending to the pool itself to repeat the process. The water stays at a natural temperature, similar to that found in nature. This system does not produce the slightly warm pool one might be accustomed to. But it also does not require the use of pool chemicals, including chlorine, to keep it clear and free of infectious bacteria.

Perfect in every way
We were fortunate to enjoy Colonia Azteca for the month of March, 2019. From the moment we crossed the koi pond/walkway to the main floor, we felt at home and at peace. Neil's design aesthetic makes the most of its location, with views of the canyon on all floors, white egrets on the old reservoir, and soaring ceilings with glass walls that open to the cleansing evening breezes.
There's no air conditioning, but even in the midst of a run of mid-80s weather we didn't miss it. The thick walls, cool stone floors and northern exposure keep the house cool and comfortable even in the heat. Daily housekeeping was a luxurious plus. The water in the pool is perpetually cold, but good for a dunk after a hot day walking in town.
It's a 10+ minute walk into town. The Ignacio Market is nearby with abundant fruits and vegetables. It's sharply uphill returning, but not impossibly so, and if you can't handle hills and uneven cobbles you shouldn't be vacationing in San Miguel, anyway. We walked everyplace with no problems, and there are plenty of inexpensive taxis if you want to ride home from dinner.
My wife walked out the pool-side door and took the few steps through the garden to join Lydia's innovative and wonderful Tai Chi classes in Neil's studio, on the property. It was a wonderful and relaxing way to meet others.
Neil was always available, always helpful, and we enjoyed our time together. We're already planning our return trip to this special corner of the world!
Everything you could desire
This house was spectacular. Perched on the side of a valley with 180 degree views of the hillsides this modern art filled home has everything you could hope for in a vacation rental. Easy walk to the center of town and a nearby luxury hotel for meals I would happily return here again. If you have the chance to stay here grab it fast.
Wow, what a great place!
Everything was great!
Elegant and modernist. Lovely views. Extremely comfortable furnishings. Lovely views from each level
It was an awesome stay from start to finish. Niall the housemanager-builder-architect-designer-long time expat-IT expert-life coach was very kind and extremely helpful. He stocked our fridge and pantry with fruit and the makings for a hot breakfast as requested. The house is beautiful and something out of Architectural digest. It is on three levels with decks on each level and has lovely deck (it would appear that SMA has an elaborate rooftop culture). The pool is beautiful albeit unheated, which is ok given the heat. The kitchen is fully stocked with pots, pans and utensils. The furnisnishing allow four people to be perfectly alone or perfectly together as the mood dictates. The home is located at the top of a hill on a residential street and the transition from outside to inside is breathtaking. The house itself is located a few short blocks from a huge Mexican market selling fruits, vegetables, dairy products, tortillas and fresh flowers. A New York style bodega is three blocks further for liquor and canned goods (Bonanza). Everything is very clean. El Jardin is truly about 10 minutes away. Being in a resedential neighborhood allowed us to participate in a local festival dedicated to Our Lady of sorrows: diaromas dedicated to her were set up in many homes and passers by were offered ice cream and popsicles. The liquids represent her tears. Downtown, banks an such set up elaborate displays +/- the frozen treats. The restaurants are great and the street food top notch. Back to the house, THIS HOUSE IS UNSUITABLE FOR CHILDREN NOT IN THEIR TEENS. THe stairways are narrow and there are beautiful paintings and sculptures everywhere. The pool has no railing. This is a great place to escape from your young children! Lastly, Soledad the housekeeper comes daily to clean up, it is like staying in a few thousand square foot hotel. She will make breakfast or even better, you can make an early breakfast and she will help with clean up. If asked, she can help with laundry.
Simply put, it was an awesome trip and SMA is treasure. N.B.: There is some construction at an adjacent property that should be done by September of 2018. It was in the background but did not disturb us.
We stayed for five days and were a party of two adults and two teens.
This a beautiful property.
We had a great stay and Neil is an excellent host. Unfortunately the WiFi router for the family room died so no internet other than the bedrooms. The solar heated pool wasn’t as warm as we hoped it would be. Otherwise everything was terrific.

Other Things to Note
San Miguel is a favorite getaway for people from Mexico City. There are many international restaurants and good local food. The city is known for its cultural activities and live music is everywhere.
