About Graham and Sue Millard

We've been married for over 40 years and we've lived here for 35 of them. Graham based his heavy goods transport business here and we stocked the small holding with sheep, cattle, ducks and hens. During that time I've done various other things apart from farming--from making horse harness to lecturing in computing. I now manage web sites and write, and Graham looks after the cottage. Our children are grown-up, but we still have "family" in the form of our dog Micky Wippitt, cat Gracie, and Fell pony Ruby. The farm is grass-let to neighbours who graze sheep on our fields.

Graham and Sue Millard purchased this cottage in 1983

Why Graham and Sue Millard chose Penrith

We like its quiet rural location combined with its ease of access to the motorway.

What makes this cottage unique

Midway between Lakes and Dales, inside the Westmorland Dales section of the two National Parks.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had fantastic stay of 7 nights. The cottage was comfortable, clean and safe to stay with 3 young kids. Lovely views around the location and convenient to get to other attractions and M6 easily. Welcoming owners. We would definitely like to come again.

Lovely cottage very comfortable. The warm bathroom was much appreciated. Lots of walking from the cottage in lovely countryside. The owners very friendly and welcoming ..... Great welcome always given by Micky the dog when we arrived back at the cottage.

Excellent cottage, everything we needed. Extremely helpful and friendly owners and great location.

Lovely comfortable cottage in a secluded location. The cottage was clean and comfortable. Enjoyed the peace and lovely scenery.

Perfect quiet hideaway for Lake District touring at a reasonable price

  • 5 of 5

Daw bank cottage is a cosy , clean and comfortable base in what is a working farm. Very quiet and within easy access to M6 and eastern Lake District tourist spots. The hosts are next door neighbors in case of problems but they were never nosy and went about their business. Certainly recommendable with a tiny word of caution. .. try not to approach the cottage from the south as it is a very narrow two way road and God forbid you happen to encounter anything coming in the opposite direction!

Welcoming, comfortable, great cottage

  • 5 of 5

Despite arriving late, the owner was there to greet us and make sure we were happy with the cottage. It's a well provisioned & comfortable upside down cottage. It has loads of space. Clean bedding, oodles of warm towels We really appreciared the porch area of the cottage for dumping muddy boots and wet coats. We followed owner's direction to access the cottage, which were excellent, and you really do drive out through the back of the service station. Despite apparent closeness to M6, you are in the middle of the countryside, and during our brief stay we enjoyed 2 circular walks directly from the cottage door.

A Tranquil Paradise

  • 5 of 5

A fantastic location in the countryside with wonderful villages and walks aplenty. It was a shame it was just a short stay as we would have liked to see more but we did manage a lovely long walk and visited the chocolate factory in nearby Orton. The accommodation itself is lovely and peaceful and we were made to feel very welcome. We would certainly love to spend more time here.
