Daw Bank Cottage is 16 miles south of Penrith, 16 miles north of Kendal, and 3 miles west of Orton and Tebay. Quiet Rural Location in the Westmorland Dales (which joins up the Lake District And Dales National Parks) but easy to reach off the M6, less than 5 minutes from the northbound or southbound Tebay Services.
This unspoilt area is part of the northern Lake District, with easy access to the Lakes, Yorkshire Dales and the Eden Valley, and offers excellent touring, walking and cycling opportunities. The house is of "upside down" design and the living room windows afford views of the Howgills, the Lune Valley and the famous Shap gradient of the West Coast railway line - close enough to be impressive, yet not so near as to be disruptive! Sleeps 5, in 2 bedrooms (standard booking charge is for 4 people. Surcharge per night above that number.)
We will usually be around when you arrive but since the Covid lockdowns we have enabled minimal-contact check-in and check-out, and we leave a 1-day gap between bookings to enable cleaning and disinfection, etc. Non smoking policy.
Parking is for 2 cars, 3 by arrangement.
We do not have Wifi because the local phone infrastructure is very, very poor (2mb download at best) and it will not be upgraded until at least 2025. You will get a good mobile phone signal on BT, EE, Vodafone and probably other services.
We have installed an electric vehicle charging point. Payment for charging is per Kw. The cost is covered by your Damage Protection fee and the remaining balance of the fee is refunded after your stay. NB this is not a rapid charger.
We have a dog, who spends his days around the yard and his nights in kennel; a cat; and one or two ponies who live in the fields by day and in the stables by night. Please don't feed any of the animals unless you're with one of us, but the ones around the yard are pets, all of them are friendly, and we are happy to welcome your own well behaved pets who come here with you and your family.
You are welcome to enjoy our fields but please remember that Daw Bank, like the rest of Greenholme, is working farmland, not an urban park, a petting zoo or a themed play area. The farm livestock take priority. There are sheep in our fields and cattle in our neighbours' fields, and sheep and cattle are not pets. Please keep your dog leashed when going for walks, especially where there are sheep or horses. (If you go among cattle anywhere, be prepared to let the dog go if they become inquisitive or aggressive.)
In reply to some queries we have had: There is no enclosed space outside Daw Bank Cottage where you can leave dogs or toddlers unsupervised. There are no dog parks nearby to let a dog run free.
TEMPORARY MESSAGE, OCTOBER 2023
There have been some glitches with the agency description of our facilities (we presume they were due to a website upgrade / use of AI text generating software) so perhaps it is as well to mention here that we do NOT have a hot tub or a spa whirlpool. Other mistakes have been introduced into our listing, which may mislead visitors. Not all of them are editable by us, because some have been auto-generated by the agency.
While these errors are being corrected, we are contacting our upcoming guests to check that they have all the correct information about our property.
Notable errors are:
- We are not in Penrith - that's just our postal area. We are 16 miles from Penrith, from Kendal and from Kirkby Stephen. Orton is the nearest village and we are half a mile from the M6 Northbound Tebay services.
- Under Amenities, a "hot tub" was wrongly listed. We do not have a hot tub. (There is a property 2 miles away that has one but its fees are twice what we charge.) We have corrected this in the listing now.
- Times given by Vrbo for driving to various local attractions and services should be taken with a pinch of salt - generally, doubled.
- Some of the "local" attractions named by Vrbo's software either don't exist or are well out of our area. I didn't know there was a restaurant at Scar Side Farm. There's a small B&B and walkers' cafe of that name and there is Scar Cafe in Orton village. (I think the AI has been scraping Trip Advisor. I'm still trying to find out where "Colclough Stag" is.) So FOR ACCURATE INFORMATION PLEASE READ OUR PERSONAL WEB SITE, https://www.dawbank.co.uk (if that URL gets taken out by the software, search for Daw Bank Cottage, Greenholme CA10 3TA).
If all that information is irrelevant to you, then hurrah, and we look forward to seeing you!
cheers
Sue Millard
