About the property

ideal villa for groups up to 12 people

Villa Lean is a beautiful, private villa nestled in the hills of Tuscany’s wine country above the ancient walled village of Lucca . The original farmhouse was previously owned by David Lean, the famous film director; who fell in love with the breathtaking views but never started the restoration work. The house was left deserted until 1993 when it was acquired by the Ferrucci family who totally restored and modernised it whilst retaining its character and many authentic features.

The house comprises three separate living areas that sleep up to 12 people and can be rented out for a single large group. The main house sleeps 8 people.. The oldest part of the house, which dates back to the 12th century, adjoins the main house and sleeps 2.. A comfortable loft sleeps a further 2 people.Monica Ferrucci, who is an expert cook offers an extensive menu of superb, affordable Italian and local Tuscan cuisine.

Description :

The house comprises three separate living areas that sleep up to 12 people and can be rented out for a single large group . The main house sleeps 8 people; it has four well-lit bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a large kitchen and a first floor sitting room. The oldest part of the house, which dates back to the 12th century, adjoins the main house and sleeps 2. It has a lounge area, bathroom, spacious kitchen and an original fireplace in the large first floor bedroom. A comfortable loft with a kitchenette, bathroom and bedroom sleeps a further 2 people. Outside the house is a large pool that is surrounded by sumptuous gardens and enjoys fabulous views across the vineyards and valley below.

food related property:

All the kitchen areas are well appointed with high quality appliances or if you prefer, a barbeque is available for outdoor cooking. If you would rather not cook at all, Monica Ferrucci, who is an expert cook and lives in self contained accommodation at the back of the house, offers an extensive menu of superb, affordable Italian and local Tuscan cuisine. As well as being an excellent cook, Monica also has a wealth of local knowledge that she is always willing to share to ensure you make the most of your visit.

Cooking Lesson:

You will get to know the secret of the Tuscan Cuisine during the course of our cooking lessons.

You will be able to assist to the creation of some of the most famous traditional dishes such as hand made pasta, ravioli , gnocchi and more.

Together with your cooperation we’ll select the proper ingredients in order to prepare various dishes, which, at the end , will be tasted and, why not followed by a glass of wine from the surrounding vineyards.

Tuscany lost corner:

During your stay at the Villa, you have the opportunity to do what we call a mountain villages tour. It’s essentially another way of getting off the beaten track! Just like in a safari, we are going to drive around our district to explore small hamlets, villages, historical landmarks, castle ruins and artistic jewels such as the “pievi” that normally get unnoticed by travelers taking “different” roads.

Additional optional choices include mountain bike tours if desired. Mountain bike is sometimes the most appropriate means of transport, going through historical villages on dirt roads and ancient mule tracks stopping for lunch breaks during the ride. Tours can be tailored according to everyone’s fitness.

We can also drive through off-road trails to admire the local flora and fauna and visit the breathtaking canyon of ‘Orrido Di Botri’ where it is possible to have the rare opportunity to see the eagle in its natural habitat. You can access the canyon overcoming big rocks partly on foot or by wading through chest high deep pools of crystal water for a couple of hours to complete the whole track. Helmets will be provided at the entrance. It is also possible to admire the “Orrido” from above, hiking on a one hour and half loop trail

If it’s very hot we may end up for a super refreshing swim in the pools of the Lima creek and a enjoy a good ice-cream at the end of the tour.

Lunch breaks included .This tour almost takes the whole day, say from 9,30 am to 6pm.

MTB Guide: The owners, who have a great experience with mountain bike tours , offer a large variety of itineraries with different levels of difficulty. From an easy ride across the hills through famous Villas to downhill experience in singletrack . During very hot periods such as June to september , we tend to go riding to higher mountains such as the Appennini with spectacular views over the valleys. Other tours include Le 5 terre , the perfect ride all year long.

Please don't hesitate to contact us for low season weeky offers including tours , accommodation and meals.

If this isn't heaven, you can see it from here!

  • 5 of 5

Villa Lean is my idea of heaven and the reason I keep returning to Tuscany - this is my third stay here!. It's the perfect place to indulge your senses, feed your soul, wake up your spirit and feel passionate about life. I bring family and friends here and every stay has been better than the last. For me, coming here is like returning to my Italian home and Italian family. The villa, the garden and the views are stunning. Monica and Giovanni are hosts extraordinaire! Try some of Monica's award winning cheeses!

There is so much to see and do in the surrounding area - the ancient city of Lucca is full of delights; the glorious resort of Forte dei Marmi is a shopper's delight; the artistic hill town of Barga is full of charm and a trip into the hills to Trassilico, to view La Pana with Giovanni, is a must.

This year , for the first time, we went to a Puccini concert in the Church of San Giovanni, Lucca; had a day spa experience at Bagni di Pisa; dined at Tenuta San

Pietro, a 15 minute walk away and had lunch at the beach club, Franco Mare.

I can highly recommend them all!

I guarantee, after a stay at Villa Lean you'll come away feeling inspired, rejuvenated and alive! I did and I'll be back again, in 2017, to my heaven!

Outstanding Place to Stay in Tuscany Area

  • 5 of 5

We have been to Monica's place four times over the past 12 years and each time we have loved it more! The view, the location, the outstanding accommodations with such great rustic charm, the wonderful food and, of course, Monica and Giovanni make the stays most enjoyable. Great location to visit all the key sites of the area is an added bonus for the villa. We had the chance to take a day tour of the hills around the area with Giovanni and it was phenomenal.

A Room with a View...and more

  • 5 of 5

MARVELOUS!! This was the perfect vacation home for our family of 11 (ages 7-70.) With three cars (a car is essential!), the "30/40 somethings" were able to take trips to Siena, beaches, hikes, Florence (easily by train) - either for day trips or overnights. Four of us (that were older) enjoyed the views, the quiet, the easy drive to wonderful restaurants and desired day trips to Pisa, Lucca, Pietrosanta, to mention a few. It was always great to be there to welcome the family home at the end of the day with stories, wine from down the hill, gourmet meals prepared lovingly by Monica - as often that we could get her to cook. Her menu is varied and extensive; Monica's homemade cheeses and pastas were the best that we have ever had (she won several "blind" cheese competitions while we were there); Leek and cheese pies to melt in your mouth; tiramisu - YUM -YUM -YUM. As many others have said, "best meals that we had in Italy." We all agree. Giovanni and Monica were so helpful with any need that we had. What perfect hosts!! We - especially the children - loved them and their dogs, cats, goats and boar. The house is well appointed with every appliance that we needed. Also, a home that had an "outside" area that multiplied our family living area. The children - (actually) all of us - swam daily in the lovely which was a perfect ending to a long day. Tops reviews from all of us!! Memories for a long time to come. Thank you, Monica and Giovanni!!

Fantastic villa expereince

  • 5 of 5

We just returned from a fantastic family vacation at Villa Lean. We were a group of 11 (ages 11- 80) and we had a magical time. The Villa itself is incredible, very spacious and well appointed, with breath taking views of the countryside overlooking Lucca. Monica and Giovani are fantastic hosts and they treat you like family. Monica cooked world class meals which we ate outside admiring the view and Giovani took us on a medieval villages tour up into the hills. I highly recommend you have her cook for you as it is better than any restaurant you will find. The tour is great as it takes you to small towns where not many tourists go. We ended up on top of "magic" mountain where you can see for miles. My kids loved their 3 dogs, the baby goats and her pet boar!

A surreal, ethereal experience for all of us!

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at Villa Lean blew away already high expectations. It is a slice of Heaven on Earth and the views dont look real yet we all knew they were. The Villa is a major step back in time all in a good way. The Villa had a " Feel" to it that was palpable. Monica and Giovanni were incredible hosts and we are now friends. Their hospitality, kindness, and just plain old fashioned friendliness was incredible. To call Monica an expert chef is a profound understatement. We all experienced the best lasagna, chicken caacciatore(sp) and foccacia we have ever had the pleasure to eat. One night Monica prepared venison and it was amazing. I can go on and on. Let it suffice to say, we cant wait to go back and we will.
