Casa Paladini was built in 1904 and has been lovingly restored with all of its original features maintained throughout such as beamed chestnut ceilings and boards, original stone fireplace and chestnut furniture, doors and windows and stone faced interior and exterior. The cottage is set in a chestnut grove along the ancient road connecting Castilgione di Garfagnana with the high mountain villages and pastures above. The closest point reachable by car is 250 metres away, although 4-wheel drives will have no problem making it to the cottage. The village of Chiozza with its pizzeria is 1.5 km away and the award-winning Castiglione di Garfagnana is 3km away on foot through the forest. Several walking routes start right from the cottage door including a 2km walk to a medieval bridge and waterfall, good for swimming in the summertime. There is a well-tended herb garden right in front of the cottage with potatoes, tomotoes, cabbage etc. and herbs available to pick depending on season. Casa Paladini is an ideal retreat for artists / honeymooners / anyone looking to get away from the noise of the modern world. The only sounds at night are the nearby running stream and wildlife in close proximity to the cottage including wild boar, deer, crickets etc. Castilgione with its shops and restaurant is a 30-minute walk down the mountain, and an excellent mobile supermarket comes to within 300 metres of the cottage once a week.

Lovely setting, peaceful.
Good location but not recommended for the unfit due to fairly steep walk up/down from the cottage. Nice to sit and watch bats, owls at night. We were looking for peace and seclusion and this fitted the bill. We noticed them preparing the camp next for visitors and if we had come when a camp was there I think we would have been much less pleased.
a beautiful tranquil place sensitively restored
liked the deer
never saw the wild boar but they must have been everywhere to judge by the ground
Colm friendly and helpful
Perfect getaway from it all holiday
This cottage has been simply and beautifully restored. We loved it the moment we saw it. It is secluded yet within easy reach of any amenities you would want. We found it to be ideally located to reach the many attractions in Garfagnana and was a glorious haven to come back to and chill out. Had great fun with the pizza oven! Our caretaker took great care to make sure everything was perfect for our stay. Excellent customer service from the owner also. thoroughly recommended.
The cottage has been renovated beautifully simple understated and just right with details where it matters. We sat outside in the evenings around the pizza oven watching fireflies and listening to the rustles of nature ....magical!
The location is ideal secluded yet not isolated with all the facilities you need within reach.

Fantastic week away in the Tuscany hills. Beautiful cottage set in lovely surroundings. Perfect place to stay for walking or biking in the woods as well as just relaxing with stunning views. Owners are extremely helpful and welcoming (thanks again Colm!)
We will definitely be back!
Matt and Anna
Thanks Matt, hope to see you both back here soon. We have just developed another track leaving right from the cottage and going west towards Siliico. A presto, Colm
Directions to Casa Paladini & useful information
From Lucca: Drive into the centre of Lucca and you reach the ringroad around the walls of the town. Continue clockwise around the walls until you find a sign for Castelnuovo di Garfagnana / Abetone / Barga – take this road SS12.
Keep following signs for Castelnuovo – you need to keep your eyes peeled. About 30 minutes on this road, and just 200 metres before you arrive at Castelnuovo, take the first turn right off the roundabout – which is a new tunnelled road by-passing Castelnuovo. It is signposted Orrechiella in brown.
This new road is about 1 km long. At the far end take the first exit off the roundabout and keep going straing for about another kilometer. You will pass two supermarkets on the right – handy for shopping on your way up.
Shortly after the supermarkets there is a fork up to the right sign-posted Chiozza. Follow this road uphill for six kilomtres to the village of Chiozza. At Pizzeria La Grotta turn left, downhill, along a small side-road. (Note that sat navs are instructing newcomers to take a left about 50 meters before the pizzeria – this is wrong – no through way - and it is tricky reversing back up – you must wait until you are right in front of the pizzeria before turning left and going down hill) Keep straight on this road, ignoring signs to the right to Campo Sportivo and to the left to Loc. Pianatagliata. You should pass a hand-made sign announcing Prunecchio – keep going straight. A further 200 metres on there is an arrowed sign for Paladini 100m. Keep going around the S-bend below a white house – on the lower part of second bend you will see a hand-made signpost for Paladini pointing away from the tarred road and down a track. Park here on the grass making sure not to block the road or track. Casa Paladini is 300m down this green road – follow the walkers´signpost to Castiglione. You will be at the house (the only house in the area) in under two minutes.
You will find the key by pushing open the small kitchen window at the front of the house and feeling around the inside window sill. Please leave the key here on departure without locking the window. Alessandro our caretaker will be living nearby and will call to you on the evening of your arrival or the following morning. His number is +39 3291912547. Colm can always be contacted on +353 87 7671327. If you are going to arrive much earlier or later than planned please call the caretakers or email Colm on email@example.com
Welcome to Casa Paladini!
Here are a few tips to help everything go your way:
Note that there is no central heating system at Casa Paladini. The house can be kept warm using the wood-burning stove in the kitchen and open fire. During cold spells in wintertime feeding the stove regularly is essential There is plenty of firewood outside the house, in the old outhouse attached, and under the pizza oven. The wood-burning stove takes short pieces of wood so please use only long pieces for the open fire. Please bear in mind that loading the open fire with more than two or three logs is a waste of wood and is also dangerous. When using the open fire please make sure that the fire is out before going out / going to bed. To avoid smoke coming into the room the fire should be lit as close as possible to the wall including on the stone shelf at the back.
Water for the sinks and shower is heated to 55 degrees automatically by a heat exchange pump in the shed. Please do not touch any of the buttons here as this will change the settings.
There are two routers: TP link 528CFO to which the password is 21284595 and TP link 7F9D42 for which there is no password required. Given our geographical location the internet service is suitable for emails & surfing, not for streaming which is slow and which will use up all allotted data for the week.
Waste / rubbish
There is a compost in the vegetable garden directly opposite the house – you can throw all organic waste except meat into it over the fence. Dry recyclables (plastic, glass, metal tins, paper) can be brought up to the recycling bins in the car park at Chiozza. Unsegregated rubbish can be brought to the green bin just beyond the white house 100 metres from the parking spot on the way up to Chiozza.
If there is a power cut / system overload the trip-switch can be found in the white plastered wall of the kitchen. The outdoor mains switch is located in a column 50 metres from the house on the way up the green road – key included in the house bunch.
There is a bit of a kncak to using this oven well. The oven needs to be heated with thin logs a couple of hours in advance before making pizzas / roasting meat or vegetables. Heat and draught can be regulated using the rod above the fire.
Bring the dial back to the top (twelve o’clock position) before choosing your ne
