Casa Paladini was built in 1904 and has been lovingly restored with all of its original features maintained throughout such as beamed chestnut ceilings and boards, original stone fireplace and chestnut furniture, doors and windows and stone faced interior and exterior. The cottage is set in a chestnut grove along the ancient road connecting Castilgione di Garfagnana with the high mountain villages and pastures above. The closest point reachable by car is 250 metres away, although 4-wheel drives will have no problem making it to the cottage. The village of Chiozza with its pizzeria is 1.5 km away and the award-winning Castiglione di Garfagnana is 3km away on foot through the forest. Several walking routes start right from the cottage door including a 2km walk to a medieval bridge and waterfall, good for swimming in the summertime. There is a well-tended herb garden right in front of the cottage with potatoes, tomotoes, cabbage etc. and herbs available to pick depending on season. Casa Paladini is an ideal retreat for artists / honeymooners / anyone looking to get away from the noise of the modern world. The only sounds at night are the nearby running stream and wildlife in close proximity to the cottage including wild boar, deer, crickets etc. Castilgione with its shops and restaurant is a 30-minute walk down the mountain, and an excellent mobile supermarket comes to within 300 metres of the cottage once a week.

About Colm Breathnach
Colm and friends and family have been living in Garfagnana since 2001 and are still Irish (just about). Colm's four sons have grown up in the area and the family is well integrated into the fabric of local society. Colm is a musician and has found peace and inspiration whilst restoring Paladini and the other stone houses in the area. The picture shows Colm with Dasha - one of many international volunteers who came to help in the restoration of these buildings.
Colm Breathnach purchased this Cottage in 2013
Why Colm Breathnach chose Province of Lucca
Colm & family have been restoring stone houses in the area since 2001: this is the jewel! We have managed to bring back three house in the area with the continuous help of international volunteers who have all had their imprint and ideas. This house is ideal for lovers of nature, wildlife, peace & tranquility, and particularly suitable for those who don't mind the 250-metre walk, or who don't mind feeding the wood-burning stove with wood during the winter. Staying here is like going back in time.
What makes this Cottage unique
We have done our best to retain the original features which make Paladini unique, including all the old chestnut wood, and exposed stone. But the uniqueness is in the location: far away from roads and cars, on an ancient medieval road the house feels a million miles away from the modern world, and yet Castiglione and Chiozza villages are just a short walk away.

Lovely setting, peaceful.
Good location but not recommended for the unfit due to fairly steep walk up/down from the cottage. Nice to sit and watch bats, owls at night. We were looking for peace and seclusion and this fitted the bill. We noticed them preparing the camp next for visitors and if we had come when a camp was there I think we would have been much less pleased.
a beautiful tranquil place sensitively restored
liked the deer
never saw the wild boar but they must have been everywhere to judge by the ground
Colm friendly and helpful
Perfect getaway from it all holiday
This cottage has been simply and beautifully restored. We loved it the moment we saw it. It is secluded yet within easy reach of any amenities you would want. We found it to be ideally located to reach the many attractions in Garfagnana and was a glorious haven to come back to and chill out. Had great fun with the pizza oven! Our caretaker took great care to make sure everything was perfect for our stay. Excellent customer service from the owner also. thoroughly recommended.
The cottage has been renovated beautifully simple understated and just right with details where it matters. We sat outside in the evenings around the pizza oven watching fireflies and listening to the rustles of nature ....magical!
The location is ideal secluded yet not isolated with all the facilities you need within reach.

Fantastic week away in the Tuscany hills. Beautiful cottage set in lovely surroundings. Perfect place to stay for walking or biking in the woods as well as just relaxing with stunning views. Owners are extremely helpful and welcoming (thanks again Colm!)
We will definitely be back!
Matt and Anna
Thanks Matt, hope to see you both back here soon. We have just developed another track leaving right from the cottage and going west towards Siliico. A presto, Colm
Directions to Casa Paladini & useful information
Important notes before booking: The cottage is located a 250 metre walk from the closest parking spot so it is advisable to arrive before nightfall. If coming in winter please also note advice on heating section below.
From Lucca: Drive into the centre of Lucca and you reach the ringroad around the walls of the town. Continue clockwise around the walls until you find a sign for Castelnuovo di Garfagnana / Abetone / Barga – take this road SS12.
Keep following signs for Castelnuovo – you need to keep your eyes peeled. About 30 minutes on this road, and just 200 metres before you arrive at Castelnuovo, take the first turn right off the roundabout – which is a new tunnelled road by-passing Castelnuovo. It is signposted Orrechiella in brown.
This new road is about 1 km long. At the far end take the first exit off the roundabout and keep going straing for about another kilometer. You will pass two supermarkets on the right – handy for shopping on your way up.
Shortly after the supermarkets there is a fork up to the right sign-posted Chiozza. Follow this road uphill for six kilomtres to the village of Chiozza. At Pizzeria La Grotta turn left, downhill, along a small side-road. (Note that sat navs are instructing newcomers to take a left about 50 meters before the pizzeria – this is wrong – no through way - and it is tricky reversing back up – you must wait until you are right in front of the pizzeria before turning left and going down hill) Keep straight on this road, ignoring signs to the right to Campo Sportivo and to the left to Loc. Pianatagliata. After approximately 1.5 km there is an S-bend below a white house above on the right – on the lower part of second bend you will see a hand-made signpost for Paladini and one to Castilgione for walkers pointing away from the tarred road and down a track. Park here on the grass making sure not to block the road or track. Casa Paladini is 250m down this green road.
From La Spezia / Aulla: Leaving Aulla you need to follow signposts for Fivizzano for the first five or so kilometres until you see the first sign for Castelnuovo di Garfagnana – forty or so km of windy mountain road away. Keep following this road until you reach a roundabout 1km away from Castelnuovo. Take the second turn off the roundabout signposted Lucca, and on the following roundabout take the third exit towards Pieve Fosciana. Keep going along this road past two supermarkets on the right – handy for shopping on your way up.
Shortly after the supermarkets there is a fork up to the right sign-posted Chiozza. Follow this road uphill for six kilomtres to the village of Chiozza. At Pizzeria La Grotta turn left, downhill, along a small side-road. Keep straight on this road, ignoring signs to the right to Campo Sportivo and to the left to Loc. Pianatagliata. After approximately 1.5 km there is an S-bend below a white house – on the lower part of second bend you will see a hand-made signpost for Paladini and one to Castilgione for walkers pointing away from the tarred road and down a green road. Park here on the grass making sure not to block the road. Casa Paladini is 250m down this green road – watch out for a turn to the left half-way down.
From Modena: Coming from the north of Italy a handy way to approach Paladini is via the mountain pass Passo delle Radici. The exit off the autostrada is Modena Nord. Follow signs to Sassuolo, and then to Passo Delle Radici – a long and windy road about 60 km long. At Passo delle Radici turn left and uphill and pass San Pellegrino 3km later on your way down to Chiozza (total 9km from Passo delle Radici). At Pizzeria La Grotta (the only bar / pizzeria in Chiozza) take the right turn bending steeply downhill. Casa Paladini is 250m down this green road.
Andrea our caretaker will be living nearby – tel. +39 348 6618942. Colm can always be contacted on +353 87 7671327. We strongly recommend arriving before night-fall. Walking down the green road with luggage can be tricky in the dark. If you are arriving late at night the main door will be left open and the key on the inside of the window sill in the kitchen. Our care-taker will be down to see you as soon as possible – ideally text one hour before you arrive. If you are going to arrive much earlier or later than planned please call the caretakers or email Colm on firstname.lastname@example.org
Please note that the cottage is a 250 metre walk from the parking space. Also note that if coming in the wintertime the only source of heat is a wood-burning stove and open fire. If the stove is fed continually then downstairs is comfortable warm. However if very cold outside the bedroom and bathroom upstairs will feel cool. We provide warm blankets and hot water bottles, but this is not suitable for people expecting central heating.
