Farmhouse in Villetoureix, Riberac, Dordogne. Peaceful countryside location.
- English, French
After purchasing the property in 1996, for several years we "commuted" from the UK for DIY/renovation holidays (!) until we decided we preferred life in France and so moved permanently. We're sure you'll love it as much as we do... As we live close by, we are available to help you enjoy your holiday, so can help with advice on places to visit, restaurants, shopping, doctors etc.
John purchased this Farmhouse in 1996
Why John chose Villetoureix
We chose the property because of its peaceful location in the countryside, yet conveniently close to town for shopping etc. Ribérac is a sleepy rural town for most of the week, so avoiding the crowds, yet comes alive on Friday morning for the market, which is the biggest in the Dordogne. There are plenty of tourist attractions to visit in the area, many within an hour's drive and open outside of July and August, when you can drag yourselves away from the pool! And of course you can't forget the views!
What makes this Farmhouse unique
The spa and sauna add a touch of luxury to your holiday, and together with the pool, terraces and games field, there is something for everyone. The pizza oven has been very popular with all our guests, with everyone having a go at baking their own pizza. As all bedlinen and towels are supplied, you can avoid the huge pile of washing at the end of your holiday, plus of course it's very convenient if you are travelling by plane. All in all, an ideal holiday location, with many of our guests returning regularly. We hope you'll love it too.

Excellent holiday, at a beautiful holiday home
We decided to take our holiday the first two weeks of september this year, as both families have pre school age kids, and rental prices are much lower as soon as school summer holidays are over. My only concern was the weather. Well, I needn't have worried. We had wonderful warm sunny days for almost the whole two weeks. The house was excellent, with spacious bedrooms, and very comfortable beds - better than ours at home! The pool was beautiful, with coloured lights at night. And the pizza oven was brilliant. We were given good advice about what to do, and the best way to make our dough, etc. Plus everything was printed out in the house book (which seemed to cover everything you could think to ask about). We were doubtful about getting good results, as we'd never used a wood fired oven before. But with the tuition we were given everything went well, and we enjoyed the tastied pizzas we'd ever had. I now want an oven like this in my back garden! The kids had a go too, even if it meant lifting them up to be able to see into the oven! We did a second evening in our second week, and the pizzas were equally brilliant. A great memory to take away from an excellent holiday. Oh, and the ladies loved the spa (jacuzzi?). Only thing is, if I want a pizza oven in the garden, then the wife is insisting on a spa/hot tub too! Thanks Lesley and John for a very memorable holiday.
Great house, great holiday.
We made good use of all the facilities. Kids enjoyed the pool particularly. Adults enjoyed the spa, and everyone enjoyed the pizza oven. House is well equipped, including a giant UHD tv in the lounge. Altogether, excellent value for money, and would recommend to others.
Pool and outside facilities were generally very good but the interior was disappointing.
In many ways the property has much to offer, the pool, hot tub and swings etc. but the house itself is insufficient for the number of people it accommodates. The kitchen has very good machines (Bosch) and they worked well, but there was very little space to prepare food. The kitchen floor and indeed the floor on the ground floor in general is in need of replacement as the tiles were scuffed and chipped. The bedrooms were fine but there are only two toilets, which is woefully inadequate for a house that sleeps 14 people. Some rooms, the children's room in particular, are a long way from the nearest toilet and this caused problems for them in the night. In general, the interior felt tired and in need of a good facelift.
The owners, John and Lesley, were attentive and quickly attended to some minor things that went wrong, but we felt they might have left just a few staples in the house to get us started.
Firstly, thank you for taking the time to write a review. However, I feel I need to take issue with some of the statements made. To say that the house is insufficient for 14 people is simply not true. The flooring has minor chips on a few tiles, and the quarry tiles are old and give the right character, but are not in need of replacement. Nobody else has ever commented on this. Two toilets (plus three showers, 4 wash hand basins, and a bath) are surely adequate, and is not unexpected in an old farmhouse style property. The ad does detail this, so I do not see how this could have come as a surprise. The children's room is about 12 metres from the nearest toilet, which is not unreasonable, especially in a large house. If your children had a special need to be close to a toilet, then I would have thought it prudent to enquire about this before booking. In my opinion the property is not "in need of a good facelift". From other comments made at the time, I feel you would have only been happy in a 5 star hotel, rather than a farmhouse property in the countryside. But, of course, that would have cost considerably more. We were indeed attentive, with frequent house visits, dealing with more text messages about 'issues', than for all the other guests for the whole year, put together. I can honestly say that in 23 years of owning and renting this property we have only ever had positive comments from people who have thoroughly enjoyed their holiday. Please see all other reviews, which are overwhelmingly positive.
Special anniversary holiday
Our holiday was partly to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary. We had invited our extended family, comprising 14 of us, ranging from grandma, to baby. We all enjoyed an excellent holiday, including a family meal at a local restaurant, as well as experiencing making and cooking our own pizzas in the pizza oven at the property. Facilities in the house were 'top notch', with quality appliances in the kitchen, as well as a giant ultra high definition tv in the lounge (now on my xmas list!). We made good use of the pool, and the ladies enjoyed the spa/hot tub for a bit of pampering! Would definitely recommend, and will return as soon as we can.
Wonderfully relaxing stay and great host
Trying to find a property that could please all 14 of us was definitely a concern but I needn't have worried. Due to the beautiful pool and plenty of games and activities available there was something for everyone.
Having large tables both inside and outside was also lovely for our collective evening meals.
We really appreciated being so close to the supermarket.
John was a fantastic host not only during our stay but also answering any questions we had in the months prior to our arrival.
Only issue to highlight was that two toilets is a bit of a stretch for 14 adults and the hot water ran out pretty quickly.
We're pleased to know you all enjoyed your holiday. Regarding your hot water running out, if only you had told us as soon as you experienced the problem, we could have turned the thermostat up or adjusted the timer. So next time you have a problem, please tell the owner asap - they may be able to fix it easily!
Fabulous family holiday
As with other reviewers, the reality is even better than the photos. Everything was just right for our holiday - 3 couples with 6 children under 7. High spec accommodation, fabulous facilities (garden, swings, table tennis - the list goes on, not to mention the shared use sauna and hot tub) and the pool area is terrific. Safe and enclosed for the kids and really warm. Property is adjoining to another holiday home (same owners) but you wouldn't know it as you have tonnes of your own private space (the pool isn't shared either). Plenty of space for dining indoors and out. Town is 5 minutes away with a large e. Leclerc supermarket and surrounding area has loads to do (picturesque towns and villages, canoeing, swimming lakes). Owners are lovely, extremely helpful and also completely non-instrusive. Cannot recommend highly enough
Thank you for your kind review. It was nice to have met you all, and we hope that maybe one day we can welcome you back to La Vallee.
If you can tear yourself away from the pool, there are river beaches at Aubeterre, Verteillac, Tocane, St Meard, Lisle etc, which also offer canoeing from these points. If you fancy some lake swimming, there's a superb lake at La Jemaye (17 minutes away). The supervised sand beach is ideal for young children, with shallow water for paddling, and ice creams not far away! There is also free canoeing during July and August at the lake and lots of scenic walks in the forests.

Villetoureix village is 2.4 km/1.5 miles away, with a village shop with daily bread deliveries and bar/restaurant. The town of Ribérac is 5km/3 miles away, where there are several supermarkets, smaller shops, banks, pharmacies, doctors, dentists, bars & restaurants, cinema, tourist office and a weekly market.
