About this property

Traditional Farm Cottage with woodburner above Loch Awe

The property was originally (1700s) one room with a cattle byre attached and recent renovations have uncovered the original low beams of the doors where the cattle entered. Nowadays the 2 up 3 down roomy cottage benefits from all things modern! The property is surrounded by a working farm and you are likely to see red deer, cattle, native blackface and shetland sheep, pine marten, a variety of birds including eagles and ospreys, hens and guinea fowl amongst others out of the window. There is a private garden leading down to the stream.

Character filled cottage. Cosy but with lots of space for the five of us.

The house is satisfactory in what it offers,in a very convenient location for many lovely walks
We were a little disappointed when we arrived as the house was not as good as the pictures suggested. Although it is warm and cosy for a winter break, the decoration can only be described as very tired. It would take little in the way of cost to give everything a new coat of paint which would really help however the kitchen felt like it needed a makeover of new units and new tiles at the very least. It would also be better if it didn't feel like the dumping ground for some of the owners clutter: many pots of paint and excess furniture for example. Overall and compared to other self catering cottages we have used this felt way overpriced.

I have lived here on the farm all my life. I am married to Jamie (who was also brought up on Loch Awe on a neighbouring farm) and we have 4 children. We are both very knowledgeable about the area and can give you lots of ideas of how to spend your days in Argyll.

Why they chose this property

The property has been lived in by a series of farming families, shepherds, milkmen, cattlemen over the last 100 years. We now let this house when we are not there ourselves. It has great character, dings and dents, and you will enjoy it here.

Achlian sits above Loch Awe and is easily accessed by a tarmac drive off the main Dalmally - Inveraray road. It is a private and peaceful location on a working farm, you can choose to spend the days quietly in the garden reading or take a trip to Oban, Loch Lomond, Glen Coe, Crinan Canal, the Isles of Mull and Iona, Inveraray Castle and Jail, Oban Distillery, Inverawe Smokehouse, Cruachan Power Station (the hollow mountain) - the choices are endless.

The roads are quiet here, getting around is easy

What makes this property unique

Achlian Farm was featured in the BBC series This Farming Life. You will see farming activities most days
