Once a 16th century inn, this lovely character house enjoys pride of place in a village Medieval Square. Quirky & homely with wood-burners, rambling garden and oodles of charm, this arty home is in the Mendips, Somerset, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty near renowned Cheddar Gorge & Caves.
Old Angel offers the best of both worlds:stunning countryside in easy reach of two vibrant cities - Bristol & Bath.
The Airport, Wells, Wookey Hole, Glastonbury, Weston-Super-Mare, heritage & nature sites, culture & coast all nearby.
We like to think the Old Angel in Axbridge lives up to its name: an old house with a real sense of history and a decent amount of contemporary comfort!
Artisan and eclectic in style (flagstone & wood floors, a fireplace or two, scattering of beams, stone sinks, Moroccan wet room) there's an emphasis on natural materials, up-cycled and hand built furniture & decor.
Hidden away from the house is a large rear 'secret' garden with steps leading up to various terraces and a sundeck area with lovely views.
There's ample indoor space to relax in peace or enjoy fireside
get-together's in the first floor lounge overlooking the Square.
Spread over three storeys - with three bedrooms on each of the first and top floors - the flexible accommodation happily suits either small or larger numbers of guests.
Feature hand-built kitchen with wood-burner
Adjoining cosy snug room with open fireplace
Upstairs living room with wood-burner, overlooking the Square
Spacious King size bedroom with en-suite bath & walk-in wardrobe
Large wet room with 'rain' shower
Generous Super King size bedroom overlooking Square
Bedroom with 'Zip & Link' bed options: as 2 singles or 1 Super King
Bathroom - enjoy a candlelit bath with Mendip view!
We'd like the house to feel like home-from-home and with a fully equipped kitchen, gas hob/ oven, dishwasher, microwave, washing machine fridge & freezer it's well suited for self-catering.
Eating out is also an easy option as Axbridge itself has three good food-serving pubs and charming tearoom and there's a huge variety of restaurants, cafe's and eateries throughout the area: from great fish & chips to Michelin rated inns.
Not to mention those famous cream teas, Farmers' Markets, cider tasting farms & character rural pubs!
Entrance is directly off The Square, where you can park & unload.
The large secluded back garden is accessed by private alleyway - a throwback to Axbridge's Medieval layout.
You'll pass the Little Angel apartment en route: a small apartment at the rear of the house where a friend sometimes stays. (Accessed by it's own separate entrance via alleyway). There's enough outdoor space for privacy - the whole garden and Mediterranean style courtyard/al fresco dining area is yours to enjoy.
Axbridge offers a real 'has-it-all' location.
With a varied and landscape-rich countryside on the doorstep: Mendip hills, Somerset Levels, gorges, caves, coastline, local reservoir & national cycleway/Strawberry Line track.
Whatever the season it’s a wonderful base to explore the great outdoors for walkers, cyclists, climbers, nature lovers & photographers/painters.
