About James Gush
Hi I am James, married to Sally, we have three grown up children. We bought Island House in 2012 and then spent the next nine months renovating it, it had been in the same family ownership for over 100 years. We have tried to blend old with new, retaining character features such as the beamed ceilings and the granite lintle above the fire place, but adding all the 'creature comforts' you would expect in the 21st century. We have decorated and renewed many items and soft furnishings for 2017 season. We live in Devon, but I was brought up in Cornwall and went to school in Helston. Knowing the area fairly well Porthleven was where we wanted to be and when Island House came up for auction we were there, not for one minute expecting the hammer to go down on my bid! We love going to Island House, visiting as often as possible, and we hope you will like it as much we do.

Why James Gush chose Porthleven
Porthleven has everything, you can eat out somewhere different every night, and you will not be disappointed. Loe Bar and The Penrose estate are fantastic places to walk or cycle, or go in the other direction towards Penzance, the dramatic cliffs and abandoned engine houses remind you of the regions rich history and mining past.
What makes this Cottage unique
Island House is close to the centre of Porthleven, so everything is within a five minute walk, it is virtually detached (just joined to the neighbouring property by it's utility room which is a later addition) this is unusual as the vast majority of the cottages in the conservation area are terraced, with unusal rights of way, shared rear yards and fronting the street. This is not the case with Island House where you open the gate onto your own sunny garden, which is made up of a terrace with table, chairs and parasol, and raised beds with a variety of flowering and sub tropical plants, there are also glimpses of the inner harbour, a path leads to the front door and around the corner to the utility room.

Lovely cottage, very well situated to explore everything Porthleven has to offer.
Thanks very much for your review Sophie, you would be most welcome to stay again!
Best wishes, James
Excellent, location, very cosy and comfortable property.
This property is very charming in character, impeccable clean, with all the amenities for a holiday break. Its location is superb. My niece and her family who stayed there were delighted with its homey feel, they could not fault it. Parking was not a problem, and the Post office/connivence store opposite was ideal. On arrival the kind note, biscuits, and wine were a thoughtful gesture. Thank you. They and I would highly recommend Island House.
Thank you Brian for such a great review, so pleased your niece and her family had a good holiday.
Lovely cottage in a prime location.
This is our third visit to Island House. The property is in an ideal location in the quintessential Cornish village of Porthleven and is literally a minutes walk away from the harbour. The cottage is beautifully maintained and has all the amenities necessary for a comfortable stay. Contact with the owner is always excellent and responses are always prompt. Porthleven is an excellent base for exploring the Lizard Penninsular, our favourite places include: Rinsey Cove; Coverack and Perannuthnoe Beach. Porthleven has an abundance of amenities with two excellent chip shops and great pizzas from the deli. I would definately recommend Island House.
Thanks for such a great review, having notched up six weeks at Island House you must know it as well as we do! You are always welcome!

Porthleven is a lovely place. The Cottage is well placed for all the local facilities. It is beside the main road but that did not trouble us. If you want absolute peace and quiet then perhaps you should choose not to be in the heart of a wonderful bustling harbour village.
Thank you for your review, you would be most welcome to return anytime.
Beautiful, comfortable and spotlessly clean
We really enjoyed our stay and would stay there again. So near the harbour and all the amenities.
Thank you Alice for your super review, we are so pleased you liked Island House, and can’t wait for you to stay again!

Very well maintained and fantastic position
Thanks for your great review Martin, we look forward to hosting you again!
The harbour is 2 minutes and the beach is five minutes both on foot.
Newquay Airport is about 30 miles away and Penzance station about 15 miles. Porthleven has everything and is on a bus route and the coastal path so you could manage perfectly well without a car.
Everything in Cornwall is within 40 min. drive and there are plenty of towns. beaches and coves nearby.
Porthleven is very much known for it's food with many pubs and restaurants including Rick Stein, these are mainly situated around the historic harbour, there is also an annual food festival, there are also galleries & shops as well as a reasonable sized supermarket.
