|Minimum Stay||5 - 7 nights|
Villa Sofia was built at the end of the 18th Century and underwent a restoration process from 2002 up until 2010. It is a stone structure that was carefully renovated to include as many of the original features of the building, while combining aspects of modern architecture and modern appliances. It is an authentic representative of traditional Cretan architecture.
The property is located in an ideal setting for anybody looking to experience a traditional Cretan village, while maintaining complete privacy, peace and quiet. The village of Prines provides a perfect setting, with numerous deserted stone structures surrounding the villa and cheerful villagers/neighbors who will happily greet you. Finally, the location is ideal for those who are keen to explore the island. Prines is located almost at the center of Crete, just a few minutes away from the national road and about a half an hour drive from the closest southern shore of the island.
The main entrance of the Villa faces north. Upon entering, one views an open area consisting of a living-room, a fireplace, and a fully equipped kitchen and dining area that is separated by a stone arc. On this ground floor there is also a large bedroom and a full bath. The rear portion of the ground floor leads to a courtyard which contains a swimming pool, an adobe oven, and a barbecue space.
A staircase leads you to the second floor area which is furnished as an office space. There are two bedrooms on the second floor and a full bath. On this landing, there is a large veranda overlooking the mountains, the oak forest, and the sea.
Every area of the house has your privacy and quiet insured.
The villa is suitable for all-year-long bookings:
The thick stone walls, high quality building materials and the careful planning of the house make it heat-resistant during the very hot summer months. The property has a paved courtyard area with a private swimming pool facing south and a large veranda area facing north, which means that you can catch sun and shade at all times of the day.
On the other hand, during the relatively colder months of the year the underground heating pad system (on the first floor), the heating units (on the second floor) make Villa Sofia a suitable villa for winter bookings.
My name is Manolis Deligiannakis. I manage this property on behalf of my family since 2010.
I was born and raised in Rethymno, Crete, and I chose to return after completing my degree in media&sociology(BA) in London, UK. My family and I try to provide our guests with helpful advice and assistance.
Traveling around Crete is one of my favorite pass-times, so feel free to ask me for recommendations for places to see and things to do while you are here.
Manolis Deligiannakis purchased this villa in 2002
This property was bought by my family in 2002. It is a traditional Turkish, stone structure, dating back to the 1800's. It was renovated carefully by my father Michalis in order to preserve its unique character while combining modern design and appliances.
Our initial plan was to live in this property, but after my decision to leave Greece for the UK, my parents chose to stay in the home I grew up in and rent Villa Sofia out as a holiday letting property. Villa Sofia has therefore been designed as a living space that embodies our expectations of a cozy home and not has not been designed like most other holiday let properties.
The main, traditional Turkish features of architecture are still there! High ceilings, stone arcs and an old grape-juicing space turned into comfortable living room space. The stone structure ensures the property remains cool, even during the hottest summer days! Photos really do not do this property full justice!
Furthermore, the property benefits greatly from its location on the island of Crete. It is almost at the center of the island, in a traditional village, just a 10 minute car-ride away from the closest beach and the town of Rethymno. It makes the perfect location to base your stay while exploring the island, since most of the beautiful and popular attractions are less than a one hour car-drive away (With the exception of eastern Heracklion and the Lasithi region).
We stayed in Villa Sophia in July 2011, had a great time. The owners were extremely friendly and the Villa was clean and welcoming. The local village is quiet and well equipped, the local Tavernas serve great food and great hospitality all within a few minutes walk from the villa. Our best part of the Villa was enjoying the views from the top veranda and lounging by the pool in the peace and quiet.
Villa Sophia is a slice of heaven tucked away in a small Cretan village about 5 minutes by car to the outskirts of Rethymno. The pictures are not a distortion, as the house is beautiful and in immaculate condition. Our host, Manolis, was very responsive and eager to make sure our stay was comfortable. During the stay, we had an issue with the wifi. He immediately contacted the internet provider and had a new router for us within a day. The village of Prines is quiet and charming, with a very nice cafe right down the street. The only negative, which the owners try to control, are the mosquitos at night. The home is not air-conditioned, so leaving the screen less windows open is preferable before bed. I consistently woke up bitten by mosquitos, but also admit that I did not use the repellant available in the house. All in all, a minor complaint for a house I would definitely return to in the future if staying in Crete! Thanks Manolis!
we had a very nice week in this spacious house. we were a group of seven but there was plenty of space. the house is very well equipped (big bbq/pizza oven, kitchen with plenty tools, enough chairs, linen and towels were changed after half the time, there are games and books) the owner is very helpful. the house is located in a small historic village. there are some taverns and small local markets within 2 minutes off the house. in a nutshell; the house and surroundings make for a a nice holiday, the rest is up to you!
We spent 10 days in 8 people (adults) in Villa Sofia. Really accurate description of the house and services available. Property was clean and well-maintained. The manager provided a good service and was available to support us on our needs.
The manager welcomed us with some bottle of water, cookies and some local liquor: really appreciated, considered that we arrived at 1 am! I would suggest to a friend to stay in this Villa for his holidays in Crete!
villa was just as we expected, perfect for us,nice and quiet but not far off rethimno if you needed to go sightseeing or shopping, the small village of prines dosnt have much there but has a excellent taverna about 250 metres away,no drink driving required, would need a car to explore the area, but if the weather is nice for your week you could just spend the week at the villa, excellent restoration of the villa from its original state, would recomend
We stayed at Villa Sophia for six nights as a couple. The house is gorgeous and we found it an excellent place to spend time relaxing and seeing some lovely parts of Crete. The village of Prines is well situated, near the national road for exploring further afield and it's very quick and easy to get into Rethymnon by car or there is also a very good bus service. There is an excellent taverna, with an amazing waiter, and a couple of small local shops in the village with a supermarket about five minutes by car.
The villa is beautifully converted from an old stone house and is very comfortable. It exceeded our expectations based on the Homeaway website. The kitchen is very well equipped with everything you need to prepare meals. We especially enjoyed relaxing on the terraces. The small office with wi fi was lovely and the bathroom has probably the best shower we have ever had in Greece.
The owner, the architect of the house, was very helpful showing us how everything worked and it was interesting to talk to him about the restoration of the property. He can also arrange sailing. We really appreciated him letting us leave a little later on our last day. We would have no hesitation in recommending Villa Sophia to a friend, in fact we have already done so, and if we were to visit the area again would definitely return.
Villa Sofia is situated in the village of Prines, a traditional village near the city of Rethymno. Prines is a village full of old-rustic houses and villas that date back hundreds of years.
The center of the city of Rethymno is a 15 minute car drive away
The region of Rethymno as a whole is rich with history. The town still maintains its old aristocratic appearance, with its buildings dating from the 16th century, arched doorways, stone staircases, Byzantine and Hellenic-Roman remains, the small Venetian harbor and narrow streets. The city's Venetian-era citadel, the Fortezza, is one of the best-preserved castles in Crete. Lots of other monuments are worth seeing in the area as well.
A 10 minute car drive separates Villa Sofia from the Closest Beach. Cretes beaches are famous worldwide.
Other famous and worthwhile attractions that are close by are: The Samaria gorge, the Preveli monastery, Plakias, the city of Chania, the ancient ruins of Knossos and many more.
