About Mark Brumham
We moved to this beautiful part of Devon in 2007 as part of our "New Life in the Country" plan. We found Great Philham House with its unconverted barn and could not turn down the opportunity and challenge of creating our own holiday cottage. Lorraine and I ensured that the barn was finished to a high standard, with character and luxury. We are so delighted with the result, that we stay in the cottage ourselves for an occasional holiday, even though its only next door! Having worked hard to provide the highest standard of accommodation, we would now like to welcome everyone else to come and enjoy this fantastic part of Devon and are wonderful holiday cottage.
Mark Brumham purchased this Barn in 2007
Why Mark Brumham chose Hartland
We are situated in the heart of the Hartland Peninsular and surrounded by Devon countryside. Its very difficult to accurately describe the area, as there are so many redeeming features, there is simply everything on offer here. Peaceful and tranquil surroundings, fantastic views, rugged coast line, hidden coves, sandy beaches to name but a few. You simply cant help but fall in love with the area, everyone is so friendly and welcoming, the local pubs are full of atmosphere and local ale! You can walk for miles, either in land or along the fabulous west country coastal path. The hamlet of Philham, whist off the main routes, has easy access to the town of Hartland and the main A39, with links to Cornwall.
What makes this Barn unique
The Parlour enjoys a large, private, enclosed, child friendly courtyard which is excellent for BBQ, eating out and soaking up the sunshine. There is also a large lawn / meadow with beautiful views of the surrounding countryside. It is ideal for children of all ages, as there are rope swings and large trampoline available to play on. Inside there is a large open plan living area, with fully fitted kitchen, leather suite, large dinning table and a warm cast iron wood burner. There is also a games area, with multi function tabletop football / pool table. The accommodation is well appointed, with large bedrooms, all with en-suite facilities, including a family bathroom, with Jack and Jill Doors and a fabulous roll top bath.
Cancelled bookings will not receive a refund.
Great place to stay.
We have just got back from saying in the Parlour and I have to say I didn’t want to come home. When we arrived there was a welcome pack waiting which we were really grateful for of eggs, bacon, sausage, bread, milk, butter and tea and coffee on the side. Obviously the kettle went on first! The Parlour was clean and tidy and even though there were 8 of us with 3 dogs there was still plenty of space. Each bedroom had an en suite which made life easier, although the deep roll top bath was a big hit for all. The boys enjoyed going on the trampoline and loved looking at the chickens in the field opposite.
The Parlour is surrounded with fields and farming and it’s lovely to look out of the kitchen window and see the cows in the field or watch the sheep being herded as they go past the door. We live in the country but it’s still lovely to see it happening at your doorstep. Philham is only a couple of miles from the next village and only a few minutes drive to the beaches, there are many of them and the tide does come in very quickly, but they are beautiful and well kept. Hartland Quay is amazing to look out from.
Mark and Lorraine were there if you needed them and left you to enjoy your holiday, but always had a wave or a very quick ‘hello’ if they saw you.
Contact with Mark from the booking on line was easy and his replying was very quick.
Thanks Mark and Lorraine we had a lovely time staying at the Parlour and we will be back some time in the future to visit all the places that we ran out of time to see.
Spacious, well equipped and decorated. Perfect for our largish family group. So good to have three en-suite bathrooms.
Plenty to do both in the house and a welcome added extra being the small field across the road for playing. Feeding the chickens was a big hit with the two year old and came as a great distraction.
Plenty to do in the area for the week , so overall a super holiday.
Thanks Mark and Lorraine
Thank you Sheila for leaving such a wonderful review. so glad you had a great holiday and thank you for telling others about your stay. Lovely to meet you all and very much hope to see you back again in the near future. All the very best, Lorraine and Mark.
Lovely holiday cottage
We have just returned from a week in the Parlour and are already looking to rebook! The cottage was spacious, clean and fully equipped with everything you could think of. Leaving sausages and bacon for breakfast was appreciated by the family. The bedrooms were clean and huge and it was very handy having en-suites in all, having a tv in each bedroom was nice and the children loved the games table! The children loved the field with the trampoline and tyre swings and made use of them every day. It was handy to take the dogs over and throw the ball around while the kids were playing. They also enjoyed visiting the chickens.
Some easy walks from the cottage (or runs if you fancy some killer hills). We didn’t use the bbq but the courtyard was a lovely suntrap.
The location is excellent for good beaches, Docton Mill is a nice few hours out with the waterfall walk. Hartland Abbey is a must, especially the Bluebell walk to the sea.
Mark was very helpful when I needed something delivered urgently c/o his B&B. All in all a great holiday and the highlight for my daughter was the pink hoover!
Wow, thank you for your brilliant review and for telling others about your stay. So glad you had a great holiday and delighted that you have already looked at rebooking for next year which is fantastic news.
Thanks again for the great reviews and we look forward to seeing you in 2020. All the very best, Lorraine and Mark
Beautiful and stunning accommodation in a lovely quiet location.
This was the first time we had rented a house, to celebrate my wife’s 50th birthday.
There were 5 adults and 3 dogs.
On arrival we were pleasantly surprised by the lovely quiet and beautiful location surroundings the property.
On entering there were fresh flowers in the window, and milk, bacon, sausages, eggs, cheese, butter and bread in the fridge ready for us.
Which we felt was a lovely warm friendly touch to make us feel very welcome.
As we explored the accommodation, we noticed how clean and well presented the property was, the towels were shaped like elephants heads, heating was on so lovely and warm.
During the day it was so quiet no cars driving by, just maybe the odd tracker.
In the evenings it was lovely to walk the dogs down the lane.
I met Mark on the first day and he was very welcoming and friendly, and gave us information about places to visit, and were to eat.
If your looking for a quiet place to escape the rat race, then this it it.
We would 100% recommend the parlour to anybody.
Mark once again thank you for a lovely time.

Spent a week at The Parlour lovely property very spacious and clean and well equipped, lovely touch with the towels (made me smile) also welcomed by the owner Mark
Very thoughtful to have ingredients ready for full breakfast.
Even though this property is up a narrow lane it's not too far off the main A39 Road and in easy reach of many places, we had glorious weather all week and would definitely recommend and book this property again.
Thats a wonderful review, thank you so much. Really glad you had a great stay and were able to enjoy the Parlour and the area. Your description is perfect and will certainly help others to book with us.
