Overview

About the property

Barn in East Putford, Bideford, North Devon, England - Peaceful, Rural Location, A Short Distance From The Local Village And 15 Minutes To The Sea

Raleigh Barn is a Grade II Listed converted milking parlour made of stone and cob in the grounds of a Listed farmhouse, all of which dates back to the 16th Century. We are in the heart of rural North Devon surrounded by peaceful farmland and hedgerows full of flowers and within 15 minutes drive of a long and varied coastline ranging from quiet sandy beaches to stunning rocky cliffs. This is a superb, relaxing location in any season. Those who love the great outdoors will love this area, ideal for nature lovers, water sports, walking, cycling, and more. The barn was newly converted in July 2014 and has a number of features to retain and enhance its character. It retains its original thick walls, has exposed beams and bags of character.

With all rooms on the same level, access is easy and both bedrooms have their own en-suites, one with a double-ended bath/shower and the other with a shower only. The bedrooms both have king-size beds and one room can be configured as a twin room if preferred.

The open plan living room has an area for dining and a well equipped kitchen with fridge, dishwasher, integrated oven and ceramic hob, and microwave. A washing machine (and dryer) and freezer can be found in the adjoining Boot Room. Furnished with comfortable fabric sofas and oak flooring throughout to complement the character of the cottage, the living area is bright and airy. There is oak flooring in the living area, kitchen and bedrooms and the whole barn is heated by underfloor heating from our biomass boiler. There is also a log burning stove in the living area for that extra cosy feeling on chilly nights!

French Windows open out onto the patio and garden with a seating area and BBQ and there is a secluded 2 acre meadow available for guests about 200 metres away along our private track. This has a small picnic table where you can enjoy distant views of Dartmoor and the rolling Devon countryside, while you do a bit of wildlife spotting.

There is private parking immediately behind the barn. In the village, less than 10 minutes’ drive away, is a friendly pub and shops.

About Myles Thomas

We are Myles and Sarah Thomas. Myles is an ecologist and worked in environmental protection for over 30 years. Sarah is a Nurse Practioner at a local doctor’s surgery. In January 2013, we bought a 16th Century Grade II Listed Devon Longhouse in North Devon with plans for a self-sufficient, low carbon life style supported by two high quality, characterful holiday cottages.

It took over a year to repair the main house by making it weather tight and warm, and a further 4 months to convert one of the outbuildings to holiday accommodation. We completed Raleigh Barn in August 2014 and have just converted Raleigh Cottage for Sarah's mum.

Myles Thomas purchased this barn in 2014

Why Myles Thomas chose Holsworthy

Why North Devon? We love the peace and quiet and beautiful variety of the area. It’s such a contrast to the hectic part of the country that we used to live in! Rugged Exmoor, sandy surfing beaches, secluded coves, fantastic walking and cycling. Not to mention the rolling hills, beautiful countryside and friendly people (the pubs are quite good too!).

Guestbook comments from the manager

Coming from Germany, my wife and I spent two weeks in the wonderfully converted barn. Just right to tune down. And it is not difficult to feel at home as we were welcomed by a delicious home baked cake by Sarah. Milk, tea, marmalade and bread for the first breakfast kindly supplied as asked for. The modern version of country style interior yields a warm and harmonious atmosphere, great to relax even on a rainy day. The barn is fully equipped with all you might need for a pleasant stay. The information the owner generously supplies to find your ways around are most excellent, where to shop, where to dine, which maps to use to explore the Hartland peninsula. East Putford is not more than a couple of country houses. No distractions, just quiet and peaceful. And as soon as the little terrace will be finished you even might enjoy the little private garden in front of the barn. Raleigh is located just in the middle of the peninsula, so it is never more than 20 to 30 minutes to the coast by car. If ever we shall spend our holidays in north west Devon, this is our place to stay.

Peaceful stay at Raleigh Barn

  • 5 of 5

We have holidayed in this area of Devon many times over the past 20 years. This was our first visit to Rayleigh Barn and we were very impressed. The accommodation is beautifully furnished very well laid out, spotlessly clean and comfortable with a homely feel. The thoughtful added extra touches, fresh flowers, a lovely homemade cake and pretty soaps were very welcome.

It is in a perfect peaceful location with wonderful views and we really appreciated the quiet setting. However there are many beaches and local attractions within easy driving distance.

Myles has been extremely helpful from the first phone call I made to enquire about the property and has responded promptly to any queries raised. On seeing our bikes he kindly offered to store them safely for us.

We have definitely found our new holiday home for our future visits to North Devon and look forward to returning.

Beautiful Barn in Countryside

  • 5 of 5

This tastefully decorated and renovated barn is a perfect stay for two couples. The two bedrooms have ensuites and the rest of the property is furnished to a high standard. The owners live next door and were very helpful during our stay. The location is perfect for all areas of North Devon. We really enjoyed our short break over new year and would love to go back at some point.

Beautiful!

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is well equipped, warm and very comfortable. There was a lovely jam sponge cake awaiting on arrival and that was received gratefully. The location is quite remote but a visit to the local Gnome Reserve is a must

It is ideally located to explore north Devon and we will definitely return.

Location

Coast/Beach:

As we are located in the corner of north west Devon, we have coast in two directions. To the west are the North Cornish beaches of Bude, Sandymouth and Northcott Mouth. These are all glorious sandy beaches and are approximately 25 minutes’ drive away. To the north is the North Devon coast with the ancient fishing village of Clovelly 15 minutes away and the glorious, sandy beaches at Instow and Westward Ho 20 minutes away.

Travel:

This part of north Devon is one of the most peaceful, remote areas of the country so a car is essential. The nearest train station is at Barnstaple (25 miles) and the nearest mainline station is at Exeter (55 miles). The nearest airport is Exeter (60 miles) or Bristol (100 miles). The nearest ferry port would be Plymouth (55 miles). Poole would be 135 miles and Portsmouth approximately 180 miles.

Distances:

The village of Bradworthy is less than 10 minutes drive away. All three West Country Moors (Exmoor, Dartmoor and Bodmin Moor) are within a 45 minute-1 hour's drive. Clovelly (fishing village) is 15 minutes away. The beautiful Hartland Peninsular is about 20 minutes away, as are RHS Rosemoor and Tapeley Gardens. For the kids, the Big Sheep and Milky Way Adventure park are 15 minutes away. Other places of interest nearby include The Tarka Trail, Tamar Lakes and a range of wildlife reserves.

Further Details:

In our guest pack we supply all the information you could need regarding the best pubs and restaurants in the area (four good pubs within 10 minutes drive). We also list all the supermarkets (Asda is the nearest and is 15 minutes away) and local shops plus everything of interest including beaches, gardens, children's activities, arts and crafts, sports etc.
