About Mark Brumham
We moved to this beautiful part of Devon in 2007 as part of our "New Life in the Country" plan. We found Great Philham House with its unconverted barn and could not turn down the opportunity and challenge of creating our own holiday cottage. Lorraine and I ensured that the barn was finished to a high standard, with character and luxury. We are so delighted with the result, that we stay in the cottage ourselves for an occasional holiday, even though its only next door! Having worked hard to provide the highest standard of accommodation, we would now like to welcome everyone else to come and enjoy this fantastic part of Devon and are wonderful holiday cottage.
Mark Brumham purchased this Barn in 2007
Why Mark Brumham chose Hartland
We are situated in the heart of the Hartland Peninsular and surrounded by Devon countryside. Its very difficult to accurately describe the area, as there are so many redeeming features, there is simply everything on offer here. Peaceful and tranquil surroundings, fantastic views, rugged coast line, hidden coves, sandy beaches to name but a few. You simply cant help but fall in love with the area, everyone is so friendly and welcoming, the local pubs are full of atmosphere and local ale! You can walk for miles, either in land or along the fabulous west country coastal path. The hamlet of Philham, whilst off the main routes, has easy access to the town of Hartland and the main A39, with links to Cornwall.
What makes this Barn unique
The Parlour enjoys a large, private, enclosed, child friendly courtyard which is excellent for BBQ, eating out and soaking up the sunshine. There is also a large lawn / meadow with beautiful views of the surrounding countryside. It is ideal for children of all ages, as there are rope swings and large trampoline available to play on. Inside there is a large open plan living area, with fully fitted kitchen, leather suite, large dinning table and a warm cast iron wood burner. There is also a games area, with multi function tabletop football / pool table. The accommodation is well appointed, with large bedrooms, all with en-suite facilities, including a family bathroom, with Jack and Jill Doors and a fabulous roll top bath.
Cancelled bookings will not receive a refund.
Getting away from it all in the Devon countryside
Philham Parlour was a perfect base from which to explore North Devon. The barn was spacious, clean and had everything we needed for our stay as a family of four. We were travelling with a 3 year old and an 11 month old baby and we were provided with a high chair, travel cot and stair gate on request. Our 3 year old son was well entertained by the trampoline, chickens and football table!
The surrounding area is just stunning. Hartland Quay, Clovelly and Mouthmill Cove are all beautiful and worth a visit. The Big Sheep was a fun family day out, and we also ventured a bit further afield to Croyde to do some surfing, and to Lynton & Lynmouth in Exmoor for a day. We could honestly have stayed another few weeks exploring the area there is so much to see!
Mark and Lorraine are lovely hosts - warm, friendly and helpful. The welcome breakfast was also a nice touch. We would definitely recommend Philham Parlour as a place to stay in North Devon and hope to return one day in the future!

Spacious, comfortable and very clean
A very peaceful place to stay. The parlour has plenty of space for families and is exceptionally clean. A fantastic base from which to explore north Devon and Cornwall. Hartland Quay and the walk to Speke Mill was a particular highlight, breathtakingly dramatic coastal views. Lots of other beautiful places to explore too, the quaint and unspoilt Clovelly, wide open expanses of beaches at Westward Ho and Widemouth and Padstow not too far a drive away.
Lorraine and Mark are excellent hosts, being present and helpful if needed but otherwise leave you to your privacy and we felt relaxed knowing our little dog was a welcome guest too. Arriving to bread, butter, home laid eggs and other basic essentials was very appreciated.
We hope to return again, hopefully with friends and family next time.
Thank you so much for your lovely review, it reflects really well on both the property and the area, so thank you for taking the time to review us.
So glad you had a great holiday and looking forward to seeing you all again at some stage in the future.
All the very best, Lorraine and Mark

Lovely and peaceful
A lovely and spacious barn in a beautiful location. Lovely and clean on arrival and Mark and Lorraine were even kind enough to leave milk, eggs and bacon for us. The pool table went down well with the kids and so did the parlour across the road which has a couple of swings and a trampoline for them. The barn had everything we needed and the owners made us feel very welcome. The location was perfect for us, as I have family and friends who live in Hartland. You have plenty of areas to explore such as hartland Quay, Clovelly etc. For the kids you have the big sheep and the milky way all of which are a 20 mins drive front the barn. I would highly recommend this barn for a nice relaxing stay and would happily stay here again to see my family.
Thank you Mark and Lorraine
