Merci et peut être à bientôt.
This was our second visit to this cottage - we loved it so much the first time. The owner's daughter, who lives nearby, was extremely helpful both on our arrival and during our visit. The welcome pack was hugely useful, as we arrived quite late in the day. The house was immaculate. Despite being only five minutes away from the motorway, the location is incredibly quiet and rural, tucked in a very rurual little valley.
The house is full of character and very spacious. We were joined by some friends and their children this time and, despite the gloomy weather, the house was more than big enough to absorb eight of us.
There is a very large kitchen with absolutely EVERYTHING you could possibly need. There are stacks of crockery and glassware - it certainly caters for more than the number of people the house can sleep.
The bedrooms are beautiful and the beds are all extremely comfortable, with very high-quality bedlinen, duvets and pillows. The top room feels luxurious and snug with its own bathroom, kitchenette, table and chairs and large L-shaped sofa - a real retreat. It also has lovely views of the countryside.
Despite the rural location, the house is within easy distance of many of the ancient and more recent historical and very interesting sites Normandy and Brittany have to offer. Our favourites (so far) are:
Beaches along the west side of the Cotentin peninsula (such as Carolles - lovely sand and rock pools)
The landing beaches
and finally the small but perfectly formed American cemetary in the local town of Saint-James.
The only very slight downside is that the garden is not secure to the road, because of a neighbouring property - not because the owners have left it that way! That said, our six-year-old completely understood not to go near the road and was perfectly safe wondering back and forth to the swing!
We would definitely come again and I would whole-heartedly recommend it.
Eight of us decided on Normandy for our holiday this year and after lots of research we thought that La Petite Maison looked perfect and it was.
Booking the cottage couldn’t have been easier. The owner was extremely helpful and was quick to respond to our emails and was very helpful answering our questions.
On arrival we were greeted by Amy who was lovely and friendly. As Amy lived locally, she was easily contacted if there was anything we needed.
The cottage was beautiful inside and out, with the rustic feel that we wanted but with all the mod cons of easy living. The kitchen was large, bright and airy and well-stocked with all the basic utensils, pans, plates, glasses, cling film etc.. There was also a welcome basket provided full of goodies. The table in the kitchen was plenty big enough for us all to sit around on cooler days. The kitchen opened out onto a large patio which was great for catching the morning sun whilst enjoying breakfast. Back inside, the living room was again very spacious with three large and comfortable sofas, complete with a piano which we all enjoyed. There was a large television (I think there was Sky from what I remember) with a good selection of DVDs to choose from.
On the first floor were three good sized bedrooms with ample space for storage. The beds were really comfy with good quality bedding. There were plenty of towels provided and we also asked for use of the beach towels which were lovely and soft.
The second floor studio apartment was cavernous, a lovely, bright and airy room. Great if any one wanted to escape for a bit of tranquillity.
Our two young boys were also with us, aged 2 and 4 and both of them had a great holiday. There were plenty of toys and DVDs to keep them amused. Although relatively small, the front garden had a large patio table and chairs, again enough for all of us which was great for the afternoon and evening sun. There was also a grassed area directly at the front where we could put our paddling pool (we brought ourselves). There was also another good sized garden just the other side of the drive. This had some swings which the kids loved, a picnic bench and a washing line.
All-in-all the holiday was great, Tonia and Amy did everything they could to help us enjoy our holiday. If ever we decide to holiday in Normandy again, we would certainly look at re-booking La Petite Maison.
Thoroughly enjoyed at La Petite Maison which was ideally situated for us to explore the D Day beaches, Bayeaux, Mt St Michel etc. etc
The gite was amazing, so well equipped, especially the kitchen, beautifully furnished and the bedrooms perfect especially the attic bedroom. Everything to a very high standard, credit to the owners (who couldn't have been more helpful).
The property was more than we were expecting. The description was accurate but the quality of beds and bedding was the extremely high for a holiday let. A good night's sleep guaranteed. There is absolutely nothing that is not supplied in this home. Very easy to book with immediate replies. Lovely rural area with interesting towns nearby. Great supermarket within a short drive. The only thing I would have changed is the weather. Luckily with such a comfortable home to stay in this did not ruin our peaceful week. Would definately recommend this property if you are looking for an extremely comfortable home with everything you could need and peace and quiet. Great place to recharge the batteries.
Our stay was perfect from the day we arrived (August 2011) until the very end. We had a super time. We were 3 families (5 adults, 3 teenagers, 2 children and 8 months old twins) and we had plenty of space. The piano, outdoor playground and the WII was very well appreciated by the young ones.
A huge thank you to the trust worthy owner who was kind enough to supply cribs, highchairs, blankets, toys and a stroller to accomodate for the babies. We even had a welcome basket of food and beverages waiting for us.
The rooms are spacious with very comfortable beds. The kitchen is well equiped. The young ones enjoyed the loft area with their own private living space.
A car is a must because the house is in a quiet farm area. The supermarket and gas station is a 2 minutes drive away. St-James is a very cute little town to walk through and picnic near the little creek down behind the church.
The house is centrally located between the Normandy and Brittany. And easy access to many site seeing places.
While we were in St-James, we spent a day at the Normandy beaches to visit the American Memorial and other memorial to learn more about the Normandy landings during WW2 and had dinner in Bayeux. Other days were spent towards Brittany visiting the must see places: St-Malo, Cancale and Dinan. You can also see one of the highest standing stone (mehnir) in less than 30 minutes from the house in Dol-de-Bretagne.
We spent 1 week at the house and we all wish that we could have stayed longer to enjoy the house more. We had great weather and really nice BBQ dinners on the terrasse.
The bicycles were very appreciated for the local promenade in the fields. And last but not least, the Normandy cows are just too cute!
We would definitively rent again!
Although we arrived later in pouring down rain, the gite and welcome couldn't have been better.
From them on the sun shone on us for almost two weeks, and with so many places to explore the gite couldn't have been better placed!
Being 2 families we found the gite perfect, the kids loved the lounge with the wii and piano whilst the adults had plenty of relaxing in the beautiful 'loft' area. Kitchen ideal for lots of family meals and large table to sit round and chat. Great outdoor space - breakfast in the sun on the rear patio and dinner at the front table and chairs!
Emily couldn't have done enough for us and was so helpful!
Thank you again, wish we were there ..... back to blighty!!
A sympathetically restored country cottage located in a small hamlet in lower Normandy. The nearest town is St.James approximately 3.5 km away, and close to the A84. St.James has shops, bars and restaurants as well as a market on a Monday morning. On the outskirts of the town is a large WW2 cemetery where the graves of American soldiers killed in action during the Normandy landings can be seen. There is plenty to do in the area, why not visit the world heritage site of le Mont Saint-Michel the second most popular attraction in France after the Eiffel Tower in Paris. There are the botanical gardens in Avranches, or the 12th Century castle in Fougere. If seafood is your thing, you couldn't be better placed with Cancale and St Malo practically on your doorstep. For the children there is the Zoo at Champrepus, Alligator Bay reptile house or what about a theme or water park. The location is ideal for Golf courses, cycle routes and not forgetting those fantastic beaches.
Completely re-decorated throughout for the 2012 - 2013 season and the purchase of a new double oven for the main kitchen area are just two of the many improvements and purchases that have been made to the cottage to ensure that you have a pleasurable stay.
