Bungalow in Honingham, Norwich, Norfolk, England
- Calendar last updated:
- 16 Mar 2019
Anna is a retired teacher, Robert is retired and is now a Master Gardener volunteer with Garden Organic and is on hand to offer advice about places to visit or walks in the locality. They have lived in Honingham for over 20 years and have enjoyed the slower pace of life. Anna and Robert have welcomed visitors to Kingfishers Retreat for over 8 years. Robert is a keen bird watcher and the garden offers sightings of many different types of birds from kingfishers to red kites.
Anna purchased this Bungalow in 1993
Why Anna chose Norwich
We bought this property so that Robert could fulfil his ambition of growing his own fruit and vegetables as well as developing a more formal garden. The property is bounded on one side by the River Tud which is very tranquil to watch. Honingham is a small village centrally placed for all the attractions of Norwich and Norfolk. There is a pub/ restaurant a short walk away. The coasts of both north and east Norfolk can be reached within about 50 minutes as well as a number of RSPB and nature reserves.
What makes this Bungalow unique
The property is approached from down a long drive with parking directly outside. It is very quiet and spacious being all on one level. The entrance is into a well equipped kitchen diner. The lounge is large and overlooks the main garden, it will easily accommodate the single bed, if required. In the bedroom there is both a king sized bed and a single bed to choose from. The bathroom has both a large shower and a separate bath. There is a private patio and full use of the owners garden. We have aimed to make Kingfishers Retreat somewhere we would like to go to our selves. The property is close to a number of golf courses, with Barnham Broom 10 minutes drive away. There are both coarse and trout fishing lakes nearby. There are cycle routes in the locality including Marriots Way.

The house met our needs ideally, it took an hour or two to warm up but then became cosy. Nothing was missing and everything work and the beds were comfortable. The garden was something extra especially with the river at the bottom of it and the ducks and moorhens there going about their business; one morning we saw a pheasent wondering around. Although the intention of our journey was to visit a sick relative, we of course took the opportunity to travel the region: we visited Cambridge, Comer, Blickling Hall, Southwold (fell in love with place), Yarmouth, Lavenham, Colchester and maybe some places I already don't recall. If due to Brexit my life in Berlin should no longer be possible, I could well imagine living in the region.
Thank you once again for the house
With sincere regards
Chris & Melitta

Spacious bungalow near Norwich
My wife and I spent a week in August in Honingham near Norwich. Norwich/Norfolk turned out to be a gem. The bungalow is fully equipped, well maintained and even has access to a garden in the back. It is spacious, quiet and private parking is a big bonus.
It comes with a great guide - a compilation of useful info.
Lovely tranquil location.
Really felt at home. everything you needed for a perfect stay. only sorry didn't have enough time to spend in this spacious bungalow. Very cl;ean and wonderful garden.
Owners very nice and friendly.
Hoping we have the chance to stay there again!!
A lovely stay...
We had a lovely stay at the Kingfisher. The Bungalow was thoroughly equipped and clean, lovely views into the garden and most of all our hosts were welcoming and friendly. Who could ask for more!
Thank you, we were very pleased that you enjoyed your stay.
Very comfortable, spacious, well equipped, tranquil and ideally located to explore Norfolk
The bungalow is very comfortable, spacious and well equipped, with restful views of the tranquil garden (which is a haven for wildlife) from both the kitchen and lounge. The bird song was a real joy. The quiet village is blessed with an excellent pub/restaurant, within a short walk, and it is difficult to think that the main road (A47) between Deerham and Norwich once went through this peaceful village.
The binder full of information about the bungalow and potential places to visit, plus numerous leaflets and National Trust handbook, were a great help in planning our holiday and very much appreciated. Sadly we only managed to visit a fraction of the places on our list and will have to return in the future.
Norfolk has so much to offer for everyone and Kingfisher’s Rest is ideally located for exploring the county. Norwich, which is only a bus or park & ride away, is a real gem and we can recommend the city walks and the Anglican Cathedral, complete with cloisters, is well worth a visit. Not to mention the beautiful coastline and a wealth of gardens, historic houses, coastal and inland nature reserves, market towns and villages, etc.
We have no hesitation in recommending Kingfisher’s Rest. Thank you so much Anna and Robert for a very comfortable and enjoyable stay, and your excellent help and guidance.

We are so pleased that you both had an enjoyable stay and that you took the time to write such a lovely review. You are quite right that there are many places to visit and a wide variety of things to do. Hopefully you will be able to return to Norfolk before too long. With thanks, Anna

Norwich is the most complete medieval city in England and has a Romanesque Cathedral and its own Norman Castle. It has many cosmopolitan shops and cafes - and was voted in the UK top 5 for shopping locations. It also has a vibrant 6 day open air market.
For more artistic people there is the Sainsbury's Centre for Visual Arts, which has various displays of artwork and artefacts, there are also theatres, cinemas, and a wide selection of restaurants. An insight into Norfolk's colourful past from pre Roman up to the last century is provided by the many museums (Castle museum, Gressenhall, Bridewell, Strangers hall).
Bird watching - One guest in 2007, recorded over 50 bird species in and around the garden and its environs, his personal highlight being a spotted fly catcher. Kingfishers Retreat's central location makes it convenient to visit all the major R.S.P.B. reserves of the Norfolk/Suffolk area from Strumpshaw to Minsmere, as well as the Norfolk Wildlife Trust Reserves.
Walking - There are a number of walks which can be taken directly from the front door of Kingfishers Retreat each with luck can be adjusted to include a convenient pub for lunch and for the more adventurous there are various long distance walks.
Cycling - a network of quiet country lanes offers the chance to explore, at a gentle pace, the villages and towns of Norfolk, one route recommended, is to the delightful market town of Wymondham with its ancient market building, abbey and collection of buildings spanning the centuries. Or to Hingham, a delightful Georgian town where Abraham Lincoln's ancestors originated, or so the story goes. There are also a number of official cycle routes and cycle paths.
Fishing - Neighbouring villages offer the chance for fly fishing and course fishing both to a good standard.
We are close to the Norfolk and Norwich hospital and the University of East Anglia.
