About Susan La Monte

Hello and Welcome to the Cayman Islands! I am a New Yorker born and raised in Manhattan who has found her way to the Cayman Islands and enjoying the next chapter in my life. Developing the Iron Shore House and welcoming visitors from all over the world for me is a dream come true. Talking with our guests I am constantly looking at ways to "raise the bar" and enhance everyone's experience when they stay with us. We have a blend of long and short term visitors and it is great to see how people enjoy sitting together outside in the evenings talking, having a cocktail and just letting the Caribbean breeze pass over.

Susan La Monte purchased this house in 2015

Why Susan La Monte chose West Bay

The Iron Shore House offers a very unique experience. Once guest wrote that is was almost too organic to put into words. The house itself has been a labor of love. Newly renovated in 2015 we have three rooms dedicated to vacationers looking to have a real Cayman experience. The goal is the house and gardens will eventually become self sufficient with fruit trees and vegetables for our guests to enjoy as well. We are in a very convenient location with local transportation very accessible, but far enough away for it to be quiet and serene.

What makes this house unique

We are constantly upgrading the Iron Shore House. Taking comments/suggestions from guests and making them a reality. We have a vision for the Iron Shore House and our guests become so energized when they hear our plans. We always seem to have wonderful, interesting people stay at the house, and our guests seem to enjoy talking with each other and sometimes sharing an evening on the patio talking and laughing. We know the island inside/out and are always willing to offer advice for the best affordable experience.

We are Organic Back Yard Farmers with an abundance of fruits and vegetables. Check with our gardener Calvin whats available for your Dinner

A good option if you want to avoid the high hotel rates during peak season.

Short bus ride from anywhere you want to get to. Parking if you're renting a car.

En suite room with a shared kitchen. Wi-Fi.

Simple but effective.

Stay at your own risk!!!

  • 1 of 5

Susan, the VRBO contact, and Martin, the house manager, were gracious hosts. Susan recommended renting a car instead of a bike and even kindly booked a car for me while I was at the airport. I booked 8 days but only stayed 2 nights because I felt worse after sleeping those two nights under the air conditioning, which is directly overhead in the king-size bedroom. I informed Susan and ended up leaving to stay at a hotel where my Anesthesiologist conference was being held. I discussed my symptoms (headache, aching joints and muscles, lack of energy, fever, dry cough at first - later producing phlegm, Chills, pain with deep breathing, nausea) with my anesthesia colleagues and even had one of my physician colleagues, she is a critical care doctor, come to the house and smell & assess the room for herself - she definitely agreed that the AC system was most likely contaminated. I took off the vent and couldn't see any visible evidence but it definitely smelled musty. Back in the U.S., I went to a pulmonologist physician to take a Chest X-ray and draw some blood work. Sure enough, I have Legionnaires' Disease - a bacterial pneumonia (Legionella pneumophila) typically caused by inhalation of aerosols of microscopic droplets of water in contaminated HVAC systems. I am getting better on antibiotics and am fortunately otherwise healthy. But as a physician, I am concerned about future renters, especially the elderly, immuno-compromised, or young kids. I informed Susan and requested a partial refund and was accused of blackmail, my physician integrity was threatened, and was accused of being " out of your element placing a claim like this." The partial refund, in my opinion, is just good business but was not that important. However, I am deeply concerned for future guests at the Iron Shore House and was treated very unprofessionally by Susan when I was merely a concerned guest. Hope this review helps you make an informed decision.

Nice Island Respite

  • 5 of 5

Susan and Martin have a nice option for couples or individuals to regular resort type lodging in this little West Bay community that is convenient to much of what you would want to do. It is on the bus line but we enjoyed having our own car since we stayed a month. Barkers, Cemetery and Seven Mile beaches are within 10-15 minute drive. Turtle Farm and Dolphin Experience also near if that’s your thing. Many options for snorkeling and diving very close at the beaches or dive spots in West Bay. Barkers has kite boarding and horseback riding which provides photo opps.. for observationists. Our kids live in West Bay so it was simply the right spot close by. We had quite a nice welcome and holiday toast with the hosts who also invited guests and friends to a lovely garden dinner after Christmas. We missed the post New Year Jerk Chicken night. Many mornings we were treated to some of their garden or farm goodies like fresh papaya and yummy yogurt. We were also encouraged to forage from veggies and herbs in the house gardens. We enjoyed meeting the other guests that shared a kitchen with us through our stay and due to the length of our stay were glad to have the larger room with additional sunroom space. I have read others comments about the internet and found them to be true...mostly the lapse in connection was early evening and early morning. My kids also experience this at their apartment, so may be Island. Any questions or needs were responded to immediately by the couple who were very accommodating. For a long weekend to week stay this is a very nice place to hang your hat and come and go on this small tropical isle.

Cozy and comfortable stay

  • 5 of 5

Really enjoyed our stay at the Iron shore house for a week! Odale the property manager was very accommodating and helpful during the week. Susan and Martin were always promptly responsive to messages which made planning go smoothly. Would highly recommend staying in this home, especially if you want a more residential and less touristy feel.

Far above expectations!

  • 5 of 5

Susan is a gracious host. My husband and I stayed 6 nights in one of the rooms at the house with a private bathroom with access to a communal kitchen. The large house is shared with long term renters that live on the island. They are a friendly bunch and a great resource for places to eat and things to do. We felt right at home immediately. Also we had an in-house dive and skite instructor available. The house is very clean and laid out in such a way that we had privacy when we wanted, and we also had the chance to be social with the other housemates. The house was very quiet at night, and we were able to catch up on sleep! We didn't rent a car and were able to explore the entire West Bay and Seven Mile Beach with a quick public bus ride that picks up right at the house. We hope to come back to the island someday and would definitely stay here again! Also we were able to go in the garden and pick our own herbs and spices for cooking. Loved the freshly chopped coconuts!

We just loved it !

  • 5 of 5

Susan and Martin were fantastic! Susan was always quick to respond and Martin had many wonderful suggestions and tips about the island. On our first day, Martin gave us a quick tour of the neighborhood and even showed us some great local spots to eat. The house was very clean we had a large studio type room with a private bathroom. Loved the local phone provided, bicycles freely available which was a great saving for us.
