About Charles Rising
Long term village residents committed to providing clean, comfortable accommodation to our guests!
Charles Rising purchased this Cottage in 2010
Why Charles Rising chose Buxton
As long term Tideswell residents, we purchased Swift Cottage in 2010 because of its unique, peaceful edge of village location, unparalleled views, yet proximity to the amenities found in the bustling village centre just a few minutes walk away. Our aim from the outset has been to provide guests with a degree of comfort not found in the average holiday cottage locally at a reasonable price, installing touches of luxury such as the bathroom with whirlpool bath and underfloor heating, wooden floors in all bedrooms, quality mattresses and linen, free Wi Fi and live streaming movies and news. We live in the village so are always on hand should you need us - yet far enough away so you don’t feel we’re overlooking you or encroaching on your privacy! Furthermore we have a housekeeper and cottage maintenance team on hand locally to assist if necessary.
What makes this Cottage unique
We are ideally located on a peaceful edge of village location in the very heart of the Peak District National Park. The outdoor dining area (with quality teak furnishing), well-tended garden and views across the dale are unsurpassed within Tideswell. You can easily walk - run or ride a bike - from the front door into surrounding unspoilt countryside. Parking in the Townhead area of the village is plentiful, both on road and in the car park 25 yards to the rear of Swift Cottage. Spectacular country houses such as Chatsworth and Haddon Hall and market towns like Bakewell and Buxton are just a short drive away. The village has excellent facilities including a range of shops, 2 restaurants, 2 tea rooms/cafés and 3 very good pubs which serve local food and drink, all within easy walking distance of the cottage (and several more close by!) Tideswell is a charming 'real' village where the local residents are friendly and life passes at a relaxed pace reminiscent of a past era. Relax and enjoy the setting - we did and decided to stay!

Beautiful, clean and well presented property.
Beautiful part of the Peak District, lovely views, well equipped and lovingly modernised cottage. Loved the whirlpool bath 😍 village centre a few minutes walk. Buxton around 8 miles one way and Bakewell around 6 miles the other. Lovely welcoming neighbours and attentive property owner Charles.
Great property would stay again
Thanks for your review, Martin. It was nice to meet you and I’m glad you enjoyed your stay. I hope you return soon. Best wishes, Charles.
Lovely cottage in a great location. Clean with good kitchen facilities and enough cups etc for 5 people. One small improvement would be to replace the beanbag in the living room for a new one or a poof as the current one is unusable which makes it a little cramped for 5 adults. I would still recomend this property and hope to return next year.
Dear Lynda, thank you for your review and I’m glad you enjoyed your stay. I’m sorry you found the bean bag unusable (I've inspected it and it's clear the beans have become compressed over time). It was a pity you didn’t report this during your stay so I could have replaced it there and then for your comfort. As you will note from my other reviews, I deal with issues such as this without delay - something I am able to do as I live locally and have a maintenance team on hand close to the cottage.
Now that you have drawn my attention to the matter I have ordered a replacement bean bag which is due to arrive later this week ready for the weekend's incoming guests. Thank you for alerting me to this.
In addition to the bean bag, I have also taken the opportunity to order a new quality King size bed (from the aptly named Get Laid Beds) and super comfortable medium-firm SilentNight 1200 mattress (Which? Best Buy 2018) to replace the Double in the master bedroom. This will be installed in time for the comfort of our lucky Christmas and New Year guests! Thank you for staying at Swift Cottage and I hope you will return next year!
Best wishes, Charles

Thank you for your review, Susannah! Hope to see you again soon! Charles
Lovely house in idyllic location
Swift cottage was a fantastic place to stay. The house is well equipped and very clean., with everything needed for a reading break. The only thing it could benefit from is some ambient lighting on the terrace for evenings.
Thank you for you review, James! I'm glad you enjoyed your stay. I'm looking into the best options for some outside lighting (in addition to the existing outside porch light) for guests using the patio - there will be something in place ready for the warmer weather in the Spring. Charles

Birmingham Airport is 1 hour 30 minutes away.
The nearest main train station is Chesterfield which is 45 minutes away. Sheffield railway station is 50 minutes away from the cottage.
Bakewell is 8 miles and Buxton 9 miles away from Tideswell.
Chatsworth is approximately the same distance away.
“Far from the Madding Crowds” as it's often described (if a couple of hundred miles north of the West Country setting of Thomas Hardy’s classic!), Tideswell is an ideal central location to explore the magic of the Peak District National Park.
Swift Cottage is superbly situated as a base from which to discover the Peak District, to relax and unwind or get adventurous and try something new such as a challenging walk (the Five Dales, for example, accessible from the door), or even to take to the skies in a glider!
Tideswell is a real 'working village' which sustains itself (as opposed to a 'dormitory village', like Cressbrook, for example). The village is famous for the large church in its centre known as 'the Cathedral of the Peak’, dating back to 1320 and well worth a visit once you arrive. Tideswell is also very well known for its spectacular Well Dressing and Village Carnival, which takes place on the 3rd Saturday in June every year. The village has 4 great local pubs, 2 cafes, a chemist, family butchers, bakers, fruit and veg shop, 2 fish and chip shops and a Co-Op supermarket which is open 7 days a week until 10 p.m. every night. We actively encourage guests to use the local shops and drink plenty of local ale to help keep the village sustainable - and to make use of the environmentally friendly recycling services.
Also on offer locally are:
Stunning walks in the White Peak and a short drive away in the Dark Peak, for all levels.
Fantastic climbing opportunities nearby on Stanage Edge and the Roaches, considered to provide some of the most challenging routes in Europe.
Gliding and Para Gliding
There are gliding, paragliding and hang gliding schools nearby
The area abounds with unparalleled fly-fishing and coarse fishing in rivers such as the Wye and Dove (of “The Compleat Angler” fame) as well as well-stocked reservoirs. The Wye is reputedly the only river in the UK with a stock of wild, naturally breeding rainbow trout - day permits available!
The Peak District is superb for road cycling and mountain biking alike.
There is so much on offer you can take the Peak District on at your own pace and keep on coming back for more!
