Park Cottage is a carefully restored, listed former rectory within Galloway House Estate overlooking Wigtown Bay on the sheltered Dumfries and Galloway coast. Please see aerial video which is in the photo gallery. Set among ancient trees with 23 private acres of parkland to enjoy, Park Cottage is a five star mix of antiques and modern luxury. In 1740, the Earl of Galloway chose this exceptionally sheltered bay to build his mansion and to develop a Capability Brown inspired garden. You can still make out the avenue where the rector rode his pony to the mansion house chapel. The stable is now our log store. Today our visitors can enjoy 23 private acres of this listed landscape with the sea and venerable trees to the east and open fields and the old laundry just visible to the south. Enjoy the summerhouse and watch the fishing boats sailing by or perhaps catch a glimpse of the abundant wildlife in the garden. Head to the safe, sandy beach at Rigg Bay- an easy walk along the beautiful coastal path. Then onwards to Cruggleton Castle ruin- a very rewarding walk with magnificent cliff-top views. A detour on your homeward journey will bring you through delightful Galloway House Gardens and back to enjoy some of the clearest night skies in the U.K. A haven of tranquility and complete privacy to come back to after a day's adventuring or to enjoy on it's own merits. About Lorraine Murray
I live in Scotland with my husband. We have 2 children-one a Doctor and the other an I.T. entrepreneur. We are farmers and antique dealers with a shop in Virginia, U.S.A. We love living in south-west Scotland with its gorgeous uncrowded beaches, superb scenery, and friendly locals. I am a hill walker so the coastline and hills are blissfully peaceful. My husband is a golfer and his local course of St. Medan is Scotland's most southerly and awards dramatic coastline views- the sunsets are amazing!
Lorraine Murray purchased this House in 2000
Why Lorraine Murray chose Newton Stewart
Although not looking to purchase a property with two other businesses already, we knew we had to buy Park Cottage as its location and potential were too tempting! With 23 private acres, a sea view and of historical significance, this listed house had great appeal. Having renovated it to a very high standard and installed bio mass heating, every comfort is offered. With its tree lined drive and sea view, Park Cottage is blissfully away from the rat race! With open fields and the old stone laundry just visible to one side and the sea on the other, guests can enjoy an truly idyllic location.
What makes this House unique
In addition to a sandy beach in easy walking distance at Rigg Bay, the seas around Garlieston are very popular with sailors, sea anglers and kayakers. Dry land offers cyclists and hill-walkers endless adventures. Kirroughtree, part of the 7 stanes complex, is just a 20 minute drive away. In nearby Galloway Forest, the U.K.'s first dark sky park, Glentrool offers the cyclist and hill walker a vast outdoor playground. Golfers are well catered for with St. Medan just a 10 minute drive away and with further courses locally at Wigtown, (also Scotland's Book Town) and Newton Stewart. Laggan Outdoor Centre has one of Europe's longest zip wires. Cream O' Galloway is world renowned for it's ice cream and has superb play facilities. The Cocoa Bean Company is another great treat!

A gorgeous house surrounded by countryside
We booked 2 years in advance for a double celebration for New Year and my retirement-The house easily accommodated my family and visiting relatives throughout the week.
The furnishing are luxurious, particularly the large kitchen diner which became the focal point for much of the week.
There was a plentiful supply of firewood to keep the log burner going in the large lounge.
The kids loved the grounds where they could play in safety and the rope swing in the garden.
We had some lovely walks straight out of the back of the garden along a spectacular stretch of coastline.
The pub nearby (5 minutes walk) was welcoming and served good value food-The beer was excellent too !
My wife and I are particularly interested in Birdwatching and saw Slavonian Grebes and Red Throated divers in the bay at the back of the house-Nearby RSPB Bladnoch had wintering geese and a Hen Harrier passing through-Thankyou for a wonderful stay.
Dear Graham, Thank you for your lovely review of Park Cottage. My husband and I greatly enjoy period properties so when adding the kitchen/diner extension we took great care in choosing appropriate furnishings. The house is now a great space for family get togethers, but also suits smaller groups with cozy corners as well. I am glad you enjoyed the beautiful coastline- quite a special place with complete privacy if you wish and a good pub 5 minutes away! We would love to have you again anytime! Kind Regards, Lorraine
We had a great family week in this beautiful house. We loved the space and situation.
This is a beautiful spacious property, full of character and very well equipped. We spent a lovely family week here, enjoying the nearby beaches and surrounding countryside. Plenty to do for all ages.
This is the most wonderful accommodation in which to stay. The house is lovely and spacious, and rooms are immaculatly clean, We have stayed there 3 times now, and always look forward to coming on holiday to Park Cottage. The house and garden is a dream. We always have our dog who loves playing in the paddock.
I really can't rate this place highly enough, the house, garden walks and surroundings are stunning, the house iis so peaceful and the owners are very attentive and want you to have a great stay and go the extra mile to ensure you do.
Home from home
As a family who have had at least one holiday a year in Scotland for the last 25 years, we have been lucky enough to have stayed in some wonderful properties. Park Cottage is definitely one of the best, clean, very comfortable with an extremely well equipped kitchen, comfortable beds, great showers and plenty of hot water (we have in the past had to boil water in pans to get a bath at some cottages). The grandchildren loved the massive garden, especially the rope swing, our Labrador dog also enjoyed running around with plenty of space. The peace and quiet was what we look for, and this property certainly fitted the bill. I would recommend the property to any family looking for a relaxing stay. The beach at Rigg Bay was easy to access both on foot and also by car. We enjoyed our visit to the Galloway National Park, especially the Wild Red Deer Range where 2 of the stags posed for photographs and allowed the kids to feed them. We also love Portpatrick and enjoyed our day there, the children returned to the Kirkland Fishery at Leswalt and all 3 managed to catch good sized fish. The Harbour Inn in Portpatrick again served up an excellent lunch for all 8 of us and all in all we had a brilliant holiday. The only disappointment came when we found we were unable to book the week we want next year, we will definitely be looking to visit again in 2019. Thank you Lorraine.
Top, top quality place for family holiday
This is a beautiful place. Setting, grounds and proximity to the beach and attractive Garlieston are superb, and the house is SO well equipped. Everyone had v comfortable beds, plenty of bathrooms and toilets, huge kitchen dining area, with all you needed in the kitchen. Communication with, and support from the owner was excellent and our family of ten and two dogs had a wonderful time. This place deserves a 10-star rating.
Amazing, beautiful place
What an absolutely beautiful house! 5 stars aren't enough!
Lorraine very kindly allowed us to get married in the grounds of this property. It made an amazing backdrop to our wedding. We had a ceremony in the garden with nothing but the sounds of birds and the sea to interrupt us.
The house is very private and quiet. It's extremely well proportioned for 10. We never felt crammed in or under each others feet thanks to the large front room and kitchen, dinner.
The grounds are beautiful, immaculate lawns, a pagoda overlooking the bay, a fire pit, trees to climb and ropes to swing on.
The pub in the village is very nice and the food is good "pub grub". There's also a fish and chip van that visits the village on a Friday. No shops unfortunately (that we found) so make sure you bring everything you need (though I believe Tesco deliver?).
Easy walking distance to the bays and beaches as well as the lovely gardens at Galloway House.
The house was very clean and well maintained and we even got a box of biscuits on our arrival.
Our dogs loved running around the paddock. The grounds were very secure so we didn't have to worry about them getting loose.
Thanks Lorraine, we'll hopefully return for our anniversary one day!!
The property sits approximately 300 yards from the coast. The coastal path leads to the beautiful sandy beach - Rigg bay about 10-20 minutes walk away passing the famous Galloway House gardens as you go. The beach can also be reached by car in around 3 minutes.
The nearest airports are Prestwick and Glasgow -70 and 100 miles away respectively. The nearest Railway stations are Stranraer, Barrhill and Dumfries. It is highly recommended to bring a car. There is a very efficient taxi service available if required.
Garlieston is a 5 minute stroll away. Here you will find a lovely friendly family-owned pub with restaurant- lovely carvery on Sundays! There is a small shop/Post Office in Garlieston. Wigtown Book town is approximately 6 miles away and Newton Stewart -the gateway to the Galloway hills around 17 miles. As well as the natural playground offered by the coastal and rural location- Laggan Outdoor Centre , Cream o' Galloway ,The Cocoa Bean Company and The Gem Rock Museum (to name but a few) are all less than a one hour drive away. Bruce's Stone, the breathtaking Glentrool Loch and Merrick climb are about 30 minutes drive away. So many guests have enjoyed this off the beaten path area of Scotland and Park Cottage is like having your own little island. Do as much or as little as you like and return to the comforts of this beautiful hideaway on the coast!
