The Old Forge Lodge was in the perfect location for us visiting family on the island. We had a lovely weekend, the sun even shone down on us, and the accommodation provided a perfect base to return to each evening to rest and relax. We found all the facilities to be of a good quality and in very good condition. We will definitely consider staying there again when we visit Mersea Island in the future.
We stayed as a family of 4 (2 young children, 3 & 5) and we had a great time. The property, although new, is full of character, homely and has everything you need for an enjoyable break away from home. The beds were comfy and the girls loved their beds upstairs with their own little hiding places, beanbags, toys etc! All nice and clean and little touches like providing a selection of toiletries (similar to a hotel), enough loo roll!, some washing up liquid etc to keep you going so you don't have to worry about the little things that can get annoying if they are not there, were all appreciated.
The owner was available to talk to and very friendly without being in your way. We were very much free to come and go as we pleased and felt at home.
The children loved this holiday. They loved their little holiday home and the garden. Colchester Zoo is only 10 mins away. I think the highlight of their holiday was feeding the chickens and collecting their eggs! Would definately recommend to anyone - couple or family of any age.
We had a 3 night stayed at The Old Forge House in July and loved every second despite the rain! The cottage is beautifully presented and 4 adults can stay comfortably, though there were 6 of us and we were fine.
There are fresh eggs available from the free range chickens and a TV and iPOD dock for the more drizzly moments!
If you like seafood, then go to Mersea! We highly recommend The Company Shed....no frills but seafood to die for.
Would recommend this cottage for anyone who needs a base to explore Mersea, or even as a cosy little place to spend the weekend away from home.
We stayed here for half-term with 3 young boys (ages 7, 5 & 6 months). The boys loved the little balcony and beanbags where they could sit and play Lego and they very much enjoyed helping the owners relieve their chickens of freshly laid eggs!
The cottage is beautifully presented, welcoming and has a unique character to it. It was a good base for us as we were visiting friends and family in Essex. We could come and go as we pleased and enjoyed the beach and town in Mersea as well as going off on our travels around the county.
We were sad to leave and had a lovely time.
We stayed in the cottage over Easter - and we had an amazing time. it is a short walk from the local Vineward as well as a pub. Slightly longer walk into West Mersea town and the beach.
The cottage is very well specc'd and really nice - with parking.
Highly recommended and we'll be back for sure
Living room and kitchenette of the Lodge measure less than 15 m2, outside space belonging to the cottage is either on the gravel by the front door or on the narrow balcony facing the main road to East Mersea, at 1 meter distance from the outer wall. The garden is off limits. Traffic noise and fumes all the time because of the popular caravan parks further up the road. It was hot so we had to sleep with the windows open, and we had breakfast with the windows shut even though the weather was brilliant.
We moved out after that one night, being terribly disappointed! We had paid for a week but we got no refund, as the owner claimed that the website showed clearly where the cottage was situated (which it did not).

Mersea Island is situated on the North Essex coast only 9 miles from Colchester. The island is famous for its seafood and especially its oysters which are of world renown and can be enjoyed in abundance at The Company Shed and the West Mersea Oyster bar.
Mersea is located in the estuaries of the River Blackwater and the River Colne and these waters provide excellent waters for yacht and dinghy sailing. Windsurfing and kite surfing are also very popular here. For quieter activities there are beautiful walks and 12 miles of seawalls with wonderful views and wildlife for those interested in birdwatching.
Colchester is the nearest town to Mersea Island, only 9 miles away, and is Britain's oldest recorded town. It has one of the finest examples of a Square Stone Keep Castle in the country and is definitely worth a visit. Colchester Zoo is also a fabulous place to spend a day with children.
