About Eileen Gilbert
Although Gardener's Cottage is in the garden of our home West Stow Hall it is totally private. We will not be breathing down your neck but are on hand if any questions or problems arise. I run the Hall as a Wolsey Lodge B&B while my husband works in London. We love the history and beauty of the Hall and Suffolk in general and enjoy seeing others discover how lovely this part of the world is and how much there is do. Our dog, Monty, a border coliie cross is great. Very friendly and happy to accompany everyone every where. He is great when taken for walks as very obedient and - so far- has always returned when called! New hens will be arriving shortly and we are happy for children to help with the egg collecting while there is apple picking in the autumn!

Lovely cottage, location and host
Lovely cottage in beautiful surroundings.
Excellent communication from Eileen and thoughtful touches - brownies, milk and firewood for the wood burner.
Peaceful and tranquil setting
Such a lovely cottage set in idyllic surroundings. Within easy reach of Cambridge and Ely for sightseeing and lots of good restaurants within a short driving distance. Nothing was too much trouble for our hosts. Would recommend it for a peaceful getaway
One of the best equipped self catering and delightful properties we have stayed in.
Fabulous historic property
From the moment we drove into West Stow Hall’s driveway and glimpsed the turreted 16th Century brick structure, we fell in love. Our lodgings were more humble: the Gardener’s Cottage for the property, but it had two ample bedrooms with very comfortable beds, a fully equipped kitchen where we were greeted with milk and cake, a sarcophagus-sized tub with an efficient electric shower, and perfectly beautiful English gardens all around. As a horse lover I adored seeing, through the kitchen window, four weanlings in their paddock. The owners were away when we arrived but left all in readiness for us; their housekeeper greeted us and got us settled in. Gardener’s Cottage was a fine base for touring Cambridge, Lavenham, Kentwell Hall (where we lucked upon a Michaelmas Weekend complete with over 100 re-enactors to give us an authentic taste of life in the days of the Tudors. I would go back again in heartbeat! Highly recommended.
A delightful week
A very comfortable cottage with all amenities supplied. The setting is glorious in the grounds of this sixteenth century Manor House. Owners very friendly and helpful and there were good walks and interesting venues nearby. Highly recommended.
So glad that you enjoyed your stay. It was a pleasure having you here.
Thank you for such a peaceful and cosy retreat!
Stansted and Norwich are our nearest airports. Both are approx. a one hour drive. West Stow is about 1hour 30 mins from Harwich. The closest station is Bury St Edmunds which is 20mins by car. A car is recommended though there are bus services from nearby villages to Bury
It is 5 miles to Bury St Edmunds, 16 miles to Newmarket, 17miles to Lavenham, 30 miles to Cambridge, and 59 miles to Aldeburgh and Southwold.
We are lucky in having several good pubs and nice places to eat near to West Stow such as The Cadogan at Ingham and the Organic café at Fornham All Saints. The well know Anglo-Saxon village is a short walk away while trout fishing is available at the bottom of the drive. Go Ape which has an amazing tree top walkways is a short drive as is Centre Parcs at Elvedon, lovely for a spa! There is also a lovely garden Fuller's Mill in the village. Bury St Edmunds has excellent shops, restaurants and pubs as well as two cinemas, the Arena which hosts a wide variety of musical events and a lovely Regency theatre.
