Secluded comfy hideaway
Only a few miles from the city of Berwick-upon-Tweed, these cottages provided an excellent base camp to drive anywhere in the Borders. One hour from Edinburgh and two and 1/2 from Carlisle. We were able to see many points of interest with 5-6 hour daytrips at a leisurely pace. Property manager was on site but privacy well respected. Thank you Liz.
Okay. Was stinky.
Nice area but house was stinky with chemical air fresheners and made me ill. I found 6 in three rooms! Tried opening windows and flies from close by stable moved in.
I am so sorry you felt this way about our lovely Stable Cottage. All the airfresheners were removed when you informed me that they made you feel unwell. I did advise you that leaving the windows open would attract bugs. This has nothing to do with the nearby stables but a lot to do with the uncharacteristically hot and humid weather we have had this year in the UK. Scotland is known for its midges! I hope you enjoyed the rest of your stay in the UK.
Good well equipped cottage in a great location, lots of lovely places to visit so a good base.
The cottage was well equipped in a beautiful quiet location, the grounds of Spital house are lovely and enjoyed my little strolls each evening. Elizabeth left us some lovely goodies for our arrival which was much appreciated. The bedroom has a large comfortable bed with warm bedding which I think would be much appreciated during any visits during the winter months and plenty of wardrobe space. The living room is spacious and comfy but we were a little disappointed with the TV as it was very small for the size of the room. We are not big TV watchers but as it was the Royal Wedding we had planned to spend the day at the cottage celebrating and watching it on TV, the volume had to be up to 100 for the size of the room and so this very much distorted the sound quality. It was a lovely sunny day and so we ended up watching on our iPads while sat outside so didn’t spoil anything in the end. If visiting during the shorter winter months I think it would be a problem if you like to relax by watching TV.
The kitchen is fabulously equipped and you would not need to ask for anything. WiFi was ok albeit a bit slow perhaps because in a rural area maybe.
Overall we enjoyed our stay and would go back to Spital cottages most definitely.
Lovely cottage very peaceful location. But with lots to do in surrounding area if you want it. Welcome pack and lovely toiletries even though we were only on a short break. We felt pampered 😀
We are a short drive from the beautiful beaches of North Northumberland - Spittal, Goswick, Bamburgh and Alnmouth. To the north, there is good surfing at Coldingham Bay which is a twenty minute drive away.
Due to our rural location, a car is essential. We are only 4 miles from the main A1 road but there is no bus service and limited taxis. We are an hour and a quarter from both Edinburgh and Newcastle airports but are only ten minutes from Berwick upon Tweed with its mainline east coast railway station.
The village of Paxton is one mile away and has a good village pub. The ancient walled town of Berwick upon Tweed is four miles away and has supermarkets, banks, restaurants and the usual local shops. Situated centrally between Newcastle and Edinburgh, this is an ideal location to fully explore both sides of the border with access to a stunning region of walks and strolls along a picturesque coast. This is an historic area of castles and magnificent gardens with heritage.
