The ‘terrace’ apartment has a bedroom with comfortable twin beds, duvets, extra pillows and blankets. The bathroom has bath, pressure shower, heated towel rail and soft towels. The living area has a well equipped kitchen, a dining area and sitting room area with a polished chestnut floor giving a ‘home’ feeling. There is a comfortable sofa and armchair, coffee table, reading lamps, bookcase and TV with Sky News and Spanish channels. The entire front wall of the sitting room is of glass – windows and french doors leading onto the terrace. The substantial terrace with garden furniture runs the full width of the apartment. It’s perfect for eating out, relaxing, bird-watching and enjoying the magnificent view. You can also access the gardens from your terrace. The entire apartment is centrally heated. The apartment is for 2 people – either friends or a couple but is not suitable for children.
Comfort is the by-word – high quality twin beds, duvets, cotton sheets, soft towels with central heating throughout but cool in summer. Fully equipped kitchen, high pressure shower, heated towel-rails etc. This part of the Liébana Valley remains unspoilt with first rate walking, climbing, bird-watching and wild flowers. The coast with its white sandy beaches is only an hour away through the dramatic Hermida Gorge. Doing nothing is a definite option. We call it “Basieda Disease”.

About Richard Beazley
We are in our 60s and live in a nearby apartment - there to help but not to intrude!
Richard Beazley purchased this Apartment in 2002
100% refund for cancellations more than 60 days before check-in date. 50% refund for cancellations more than 30 days before check-in date.
We cannot fault this property - immaculate, comfortable and well equipped. We needed somewhere to unwind and re-charge our batteries, and this was it! Richard and Suzanne where so kind and helpful - the views were stunning, and apart from a couple of walks, we sat and stared! We had a terrace apartment - if you are sensitive to noise, maybe it would be better to request a balcony room, but I think we were probably unlucky in that the folk above us had hob nail boots on most of the time - not the hosts fault AT ALL! A lovely place to stay, and we will definitely return asap.
Thank you and welcome back any time! Hobnail boots - this is a first! However we will add a note in their folder asking people in the balcony apartments not to wear hard soled shoes on the chestnut floors.
Stunning Mountain Retreat
We loved our stay in this cosy apartment with amazing mountain views. Eagles and vultures flying over and lovely rainbows, cowbells ringing; a very beatifull place
Richard was a very thoughtfull host. We appreciated the heating after a 9 hour drive from the south. We are looking forward to visiting again as soon as possible.
Thank you Sylvia!
Hope to see you again soon.
Lovely getaway in the Picos
Olmares apartments are very clean and well furnished. They are located in a small and quiet town. They are owned by very nice British people that live on the premises. They were always accessible to us when we had questions. There is a very nice common room that is open to all people staying at Olmares. There we found an extensive set of recommendations for activities around Olmares. An impressive array of washing machines is available. There are very genuine and Very nice restaurants close to Olmares. Especially we enjoyed the restaurant Abejo in Dos Amantes owned by two brothers.
There are great walks in the hills around Olmares with spectacular views. We purchased a book describing these walks from the owners of Olmares. We never met another person on the walks and sometimes a compass came in handy to assure us of the correct route. There is no real city close. The closest is Potes, a 20 minutes drive. It is a rather touristish town with souvenir shops. We didn't like it too much except for shopping for food and Internet access. We had looked for a calm and quiet place that offered activities in nature as well as a retreat from daily city life. At Olmares we certainly found that! We definitely plan to come back.
Thank you Heiko - see you again!
Ferienaufenthalt in Basieda
Thank you Jutta and Heiner
Olmares in Basieda is ideally situated in the Liébana Valley between the National Parks of the Picos de Europa and Fuentes Carrionas in the Cordillera Cantabrica and is just an hour from some great beaches. For shopping Potes is 15km away.
The Liébana Valley: The wildlife and flowers here are varied and wonderful. The local walks from your doorstep are excellent. There are several restaurants close by and the locals are friendly – always ready to help and advise.
The Picos de Europa National Park: is justly famous for its natural beauty though it has become somewhat crowded in the season. Activities include birdwatching (the wallcreeper in particular), walking, climbing, horseriding, canoeing, canyon ascending and lots more. Fuente De with its cable car ascent is famous. The mountains are high – Torre de Cerredo is the highest at 2,648m.
Fuentes Carrionas: part of the Cordillera Cantabrica are much more of a back to nature experience. This Park is not nearly as commercialized and as a result has a special subtle attractiveness. The scenery is more open, the walking a little easier and the wildlife and flowers equally, if not more, wonderful. Because it’s quieter bears roam the high places at peace with the world. The highest Peak is Peña Prieta at 2,575m.
Peter Walker, the well-known environmentalist, has written an inspiring guide including this region – ‘Walking in the Cordillera Cantabrica’ .
The Sea: There are 2 roads from the Liébana Valley to the sea. The usual one through the dramatic Hermida Gorge is a little shorter but much busier than the Polaciones road. The Polaciones road takes you through some spectacular scenery and ancient villages of historical interest. Basieda is about half way between the 2 routes.
Touring: There are many wonderful drives with Basieda as the convenient centre base. Take the West to León and Asturias. The East to the Meseta with its Romanesque churches (the largest concentration in all Europe – details in our communal ‘salon’) and on to historic Burgos. Or take in the Roman ruins close to Aguilar de Campoo, some golden orioles and a very good restaurant for lunch! Further South drive through villages skirting the mountains and then home by the famous reservoir at Riaño. Take a picnic or eat in any of the great restaurants on your route.
