Why Maison des Fleurs chose Thézan-des-Corbières
This year, 2018, we were chosen by the Sunday Times as one of the top 20 gites in France - quite an accolade. We first visited this area 14 years ago and have had a holiday home here ever since. This part of France has just everything, in our opinion. Outstanding, and varied scenery, wonderful, clean beaches and rivers and gorgeous restaurants and wine cellars. We also particularly like the numerous historical sites, in particular we love the Roman remains to be seen in towns like Narbonne and Nimes and the Cathar fortresses that are all within an easy driving distance of our gite. Everywhere you look there are reminders of the history of the region. In this part of France you are practically guaranteed excellent weather, even in December it can be 20 degrees. So if you want to relax on the beach, or by a river, and eat wonderful meals, or if you prefer a more active holiday cycling (alongside the Canal du Mdi perhaps) or hiking or exploring we have it all - and the climate to go with it.
What makes this Cottage unique
We fell in love with Maison des Fleurs the minute we walked through the door - strange to most as the cottage was derelict and in a terrible state. It had, however, a lovely 'feel' to it. We have researched the history and found that it has always been a family home - at first it was a vineyard worker's house, the ground floor being used for the donkey or pony that would help the family till the vineyard. Later on the downstairs became a small shop where carts and bicycles were repaired, then it was converted again into a cottage where a family with 4 daughters lived. On the front door you can see initials carved by one of the owners who started their married life there - EH and PH. We spent two years restoring this little cottage using materials that were consistent with the age of the cottage and keeping as many features as possible, such as the beams and floor tiles, it was a real labour of love. Every day someone from the village would pop in to see our progress, usually uttering 'bon chance' when they saw what we were doing and always offering advice! Gradually we could see the cottage as it had been, a warm, family home with great character. We added our brocante (antique shop) and vide grenier (flea market) finds and voila (!) it was finished. Every single guest has remarked on the lovely ambiance of the cottage and the decor - all have found it a relaxing place to be with all the comforts of home. Everyone has also commented on how lovely it is to sit on the balcony and watch village life go by and how friendly people are in the village. Maybe that's because they feel they helped with the renovation by giving us advice!

We had a lovely stay in Thezan and enjoyed the little house immensely.
So much to be done locally: Cathar castles - Peyrepertuse is very picturesque, Narbonne markets on a Thursday and the beach were all favourites. Plenty of interesting Corbieres wines to deguse too: particularly St Esteve and Aiguilloux were worth the effort.
The area generally is very rugged and just driving around was a pleasure. A trip to the Black Mountains and the Gouffre de Cabrespine was worth the drive.
A week was not long enough, so we'll just have to go back again!
I'm so glad you enjoyed your stay, and the region, so much Peter, come back soon, you will be very welcome.
Although the cottage was quite well equipped, clean and the bed was comfortable, we unfortunately found it to be smaller than we expected. We are quite fit but found that we did need to take care going up and down the stairs and for some the stairs could prove difficult, a point that was mentioned in the description of the cottage, Also at night you do need to remember that the toilet is on the ground floor and that your bedroom is two floors above! The owners have obviously put a lot of love into the cottage but unfortunately for us it did not live up to expectations.
Lovely traditional genuine French cottage, lots of history. Well laid out and fully equipped.
A lovely location with fantastic scenery and lots of places to visit.
Diane is an exceptional host, leaving us a little gift on arrival, she was excellent with communication with directions and access etc.
The cottage is located In a rural Fench village off the beaten tourist track so very authentic.
We really enjoyed our stay and would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone.
Thank you Diane and Peter.
It was even more important than usual, to us, that Tracy, David and Gemma had a good holiday as it was Christmas and New Year, a special time for everyone. It is, therefore, particularly good to find that they came to love the region as we do. They certainly made the most of the gorgeous weather and explored places even we have never been too - I know they are hoping to come back and they will be more than welcome. By the way, the gite was left beautifully clean and tidy and yet they left very early in the morning - thank you so much.
A little gem
We had a wonderful stay in this lovely little cottage in Thezan. It was exactly as expected , full of character and antiquities. Diane made us so welcome and even loaned my partner a pair of her husbands trunks, as he forgot to pack his! Thankyou Peter !
It is worth hiring a car and discovering this beautiful part of France. Our first visit and certainly not our last.If you are looking for a real French experience in this lovely country then Maison des Fleurs is the perfect place as there is so much to see within 30 mins of the village. Would especially recommend a visit to La Grasse , a stunning Abbey and lots places to just sit and watch to world go by.
Judy and Dave
It is lovely that these guests fell in love with this area as we have - we hope to see them again soon.
Lovely property, well located, attentive hosts.
We were a party of 3 adults including a 79 year old. Maison des Fleurs is a small three storey town house in the historic core of the small village of Thezan des Corbieres. The bedrooms are at the top but accessed by shallow stairs which presented no problems for our party. It is a lovely house, tastefully restored (it is as nice as it looks in the photos). It has a quiet location in the (friendly - 'bonjour') village and there is parking nearby. It is centrally located for the Languedoc Rousillon region. From here we were able to easily reach the castles, beaches, towns, restaurants, vineyards etc that are praised in the guide books. We came by train to Narbonne (a nice town) from St Pancras and hired a car which worked well.
The best element was how friendly and attentive the Hosts were.
Any downsides? The cottage and Thezan des Corbieres are small (as are its shops) and the house has a balcony looking onto an alleyway but no garden. Go in any direction and you find restful, beautiful and/or interesting places (as well as practical things like supermarkets) within a short distance over good roads (even up in the hills - much less scary than Spain) but it all requires a car. Top tip: writing as the only driver in our party, include as many drivers as possible on your car rental agreement to allow flexibility (and sampling of the excellent local wines!).
We have not stopped singing the praises of Maison des Fleur and the area since we got back.
Thank you for such a sincere and thoughtful review and for your kind comments - we hope to see you all again.
