About this property

Bradley Cross Farm, Shepherds Cottage

High on the Mendip Hills, sits a stone cottage on a working farm, with breathtaking views over the Somerset Levels. The cottage was built around 1850 and was formerly occupied by the local shepherd grazing his sheep on this area of the Mendip Hills. Today the land is grazed by the traditional breeds of Longhorn Cattle and Wiltshire Horn Sheep, well suited to managing the natural grassland on the farm. Cheddar Gorge, Site of Special Scientific Interest, lies to the north of the farm and Mascalls’ Wood, an ancient woodland, lies to the west. Cheddar village and local shops are a distance of about 1 mile from the cottage. Ideal for walkers and close to the Mendip Way.

Shepherds cottage
The owners of the farm are very friendly but I feel that the cottage needs a little TLC to bring it up to standard. I am a little slow on my feet and I feel there ought to be some mention of the steep steps to the front door can be quite slippy although there is a well positioned handle to help. Through no fault of the owners we had very heavy rain throughout most of our stay and the ground in front of the cottage and path at the rear were very slippery. The view is fantastic but it is such a shame that there is a broken down old car to the left of the cottage slightly blocking the view and having some effect on parking which is very narrow and slippery to drive into and get out of the car. Internally it was a little disappointing with paintwork dirty and holed (bathroom door).Due to the heavy rain the front wall had significant damp halfway up in the kitchen. The lounge/bedroom window is single glazed and draughty. The 'cooker' was two electric rings and a microwave and the dining area a small square table with two folding chairs. The bathroom was basic, the shower excellent but again at the window a net curtain pinned up with rusty drawing pins. The log burner was very welcome but small, the front door of the log burner difficult to close which was a little worrying as the beds are in the same room. The beds are the top and bottom of a bunk bed but quite comfortable.Kitchen utensils were usable. The whole cottage became very cold in night without the burner.

Amazing stay
We spent a wonderful 2 night stay here. Paul and Judy and their 3 dogs are lovely and made us feel so welcome and comfortable. The shepherd hut is great with lots of character. You are left a large supply of free logs for the fire which makes the place feel so cosy, told if you run out to just leave the basket outside and it will be filled up again for you. On arrival they told us the history of the hut which was fascinating. Kitchen is small but with all the basic equipment you will need You feel like your way out in the country but it’s only a 5 min drive from cheddar town and a few mins more to the gorge. If you’re looking for a relaxing getaway I would highly recommend it. It’s also a great base for walking

Stunning view
Small cost cottage at the top of the hill over looking Cheddar. The view is stunning. Judy and Paul are very welcoming to their small farm and it’s a great base to visit the local area especially if you are a walker or you want peace and quiet. Plenty of places to eat locally. Thankyou.

Judy & Paul farm Traditional breeds of cattle and sheep on the Mendip Hills, an dedicated Area of Outstanding Beauty. We are a County Wildlife Site so protect the flora and fauna with our livestock management practices. Specifically we protect the natural habitat for Greater Horseshoe Bats, Barn Owls and Doormice. We grow our own vegetables, produce our own jams, chutneys, eggs and honey from our own bee hives. We also source organic wine from France.

Why they chose this property

Judy and Paul bought Bradley Cross Farm for it's position close to Cheddar and the idyllic views over the Somerset Levels. It was a place to further pursue our interests in Rare Breed cattle and sheep.

The property is secluded but at the same time within easy reach of the village of Cheddar

What makes this property unique

The property is conveniently located close to the towns of Wells, Bath, Bristol and Weston-Super-Mare.

Absolute peace and quiet are a feature often not found in similar properties.
