Westburn Cottage is an end-terrace cottage located in a quiet non-drive through hamlet called Newbiggin in Bishopdale. Originally a 17th century barn, the cottage has been converted into a cosy property with all the mod-cons. And as it's our 2nd home it's also been done to a very high standard. There is off-road parking at the front of the property. At the rear there is a gravelled area with tables & chairs.

About Phil Brewster
Despite this not being our primary residence, my partner & I love the Dales, and escape here as often as work allows. But as we can't be here all the time we don't see why others shouldn't enjoy the use of such a lovely property, in such a gorgeous setting. As it's our 2nd home, it's been furnished to a high standard with all mod-cons. We've been very lucky that everyone who's been to stay has loved it. So much so that we get people coming back year after year (one couple like it so much they've been 6 times and have already booked a break for next year). We aim to make your stay as enjoyable and as hassle-free as possible. And hope that at the end of your stay you'll feel like you don't want to leave.
Why Phil Brewster chose Hawes
The barn itself is right at the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, so it's a perfect base to explore & visit the surrounding countryside. Anyone who's ever watched James Herriot's 'All Creatures Great & Small' will know that the local scenery is stunning. The walking is fantastic too, but if the weather's not great there are plenty of places to visit including castles, museums, steam railways etc. And if eating out is your thing there are plenty of pubs, tea-shops, restaurants & cafes - all of which serve food to a high standard. Most of all, the people are really friendly - despite the (undeserved) reputation of Yorkshire folk being monosyllabic!
What makes this Barn unique
We feel it's got everything you could ask for. Access from the front door to the Dales, but close enough to towns and villages when you need them. The barn has full electric central heating & a multi-fuel stove for when you want that warm, cosy log-fire atmosphere. One other selling point - unlike many other cottages we DON'T charge extra for coal/wood in Winter (in some cases up to £20 extra a week), so you won't have to worry about any extra hidden costs.

Fantastic cottage in a great location.
Just the right size for two people, would highly recommend this cottage.
Well equipped cottage with stunning views
We enjoyed a very memorable short break at Westburn cottage. The accomodation is extremely well equipped and the views are stunning. The owner even contacted us by email to check we had settled in. New Biggin is well placed for walks in Wharfedale and visiting Leyburn and Hawes. We hope to return next year.
Hello Elaine. Thank you for your kind review & comments about the cottage. It's lovely to hear you enjoyed your stay & that you found everything to your liking. If you do come again, it'll be lovely to have you back. Kind regards - Phil
We're coming back!
The cottage was a real find for us. We love the Yorkshire Dales and have been coming every year for the last 15 years. We were wondering whether Westburn Cottage could be as good as the lovely place we had stayed in for all those years. Well, we couldn't have stayed in a more beautifully equipped cottage in a more beautiful location. It had been converted into a modern apartment which had managed to keep the character of the old with a contemporary feel and a practical layout. It was comfortable, warm and cosy and a joy to return to every day. We were fortunate enough to meet the owners who were staying next door in Westbrook House (another larger, but just as beautiful, conversion) and who gave us the most warm and friendly welcome; their own love of the quiet village of Newbiggin and its surroundings was both obvious and infectious. So, the simple truth is that we've already booked for next year and can't wait to savour the delights of Westburn Cottage, of Newbiggin and of the picturesque Bishopdale once again. Thank you to Phil and Lisa for keeping our love of the Dales as great as ever. James and Beccy Mead
Hi guys - Wow! What a lovely review. It was lovely meeting you both too. And so pleasing that your stay lived up to the standards of your previous accommodation. Lisa & I are delighted you're coming back and hope to catch up with you again. And hopefully there'll be more pears from the tree for Beccy to work her culinary magic on 🍐😀 - take care, and see you in 2019! Cheers - Phil & Lisa
We stayed for two weeks but could have quite happily stayed longer. Phil has had a great eye for detail when planning the cottage. Everything we needed was to hand and it was all together very comfortable. It’s also ideally suited for exploring the Dales and there are a variety of lovely walks straight from the door. We will definitely be returning.
Hello Richard. Thank you so much for your lovely comments - it's very kind of you. I'm delighted you enjoyed your stay, and I'm hoping you're suitably relaxed and batteries re-charged! And how lucky were with the weather! If you do return to the Dales we'd love to have you come & stay again! Kind regards - Phil
Lovely cottage in the Dales
A lovely place to spend a few days relaxing in the Dales. The cottage was in a great location with views of the countryside from the living room and bedroom. The cottage was clean and well equipped and included a most comfortable bed! After a long day sightseeing the local pub was not too far to walk to . Have already recommended this property to a friend!
Hello Lynne. Thank you for your kind review & recommendation. I'm glad you enjoyed your stay - and you're not the first person to mention the comfy bed! 😀If you're back in The Dales again, please come and stay. We'd love to have you back. Kind regards - Phil
Great Little Getaway
A great cozy little getaway in a quiet location. Well equipt kitchen, a nice big comfortable bed and fantastic views all around. Having a pub within walking distance was also a plus which meant we could leave the car behind after days out exploring the Dales. Would definately recommend this property if you wanted to get away from it all.
The nearest airports are Teeside, Newcastle, or Leeds-Bradford airport. To fully enjoy the surrounding countryside & all it has to offer you WILL need a vehicle public transport is limited and does not stop at every small village & town.
The nearest pub to Newbiggin is 400 yards away. The villages of Thoralby (1 mile away) & West Burton (2 miles away) both have a shop and pub. Slightly further afield are the market towns of Leyburn & Hawes (approx 8 & 9 miles away). Both also have petrol stations.
The are numerous surrounding dales to visit including the four main ones - Wensleydale, Swaledale, Wharfedale & Coverdale - all of which offer fantastic countryside and walking. Visitor attractions include Bolton Castle, West Burton waterfall, Hardraw Force, The Wensleydale Creamery in Hawes (which makes fantastic cheese!). We also provide guests with lists of other suggested places to eat & visit.
