Recently built traditional stone house with stunning interiors in a wonderful location overlooking Loch Shieldaig with views towards the Outer Hebrides. With the backdrop of the Torridon mountains, wonderful walking from the house, serious climbing & mountaineering, public tennis court, kayaking, sea trips, fresh fish available to order, live music in the pub most weekends, award- winning restaurants nearby and friendly locals, a stay in Shieldaig will not disappoint.

Relax in front of a roaring log fire with a wee single malt; take a steam in the granite steam room; watch a film from the extensive DVD selection or read one of the many books at the house. Watch the weather patterns weave across the loch from the comfort of the house. Relax in style.

The house manager will greet you on arrival and show you around. Light mid-week clean and towel change for 7 night stays. Welcome tea tray and plate of smoked salmon & other local goodies. Complimentary Arran Aromatics toiletries. Free broadband and UK calls.

There are a great choice of cafes and restaurants in the area but if you can't drag yourself away from the view and prefer to dine at home a local chef can be arranged to cook for you at the house or cook to order and deliver. Cakes can also be made to order for special occasions. For Christmas and New Year bookings the house comes complete with a large beautifully decorated tree, a side of smoked salmon and home-made mince pies.

About Chrissy Nason-Smith

With a long background in travel and tourism, with particular focus on quality, and a hands-on director of a small hotel in Kensington for six years, before changing tack and doing an interior design course, building and furnishing our house in Scotland was a challenging labour of love!

Still connected with the travel industry as a travel writer and reviewer I also undertake interior design projects in Scotland and the London area.

But when time allows, I love to escape to our Scottish home to unwind, recharge and spend time with family and friends.

Why Chrissy Nason-Smith chose Shieldaig

With ancestry in this lovely conservation village it was always our dream to build a family home in this spectacular spot. Building on the West Highland coast was very challenging but we are thrilled with the result.

My husband holidayed in Shieldaig every year as a child and first brought me here when I was 20. I loved it and still do! Later we brought our children: building dens in the woods, climbing, skimming stones, seal spotting: every holiday an adventure. Now grown up, our children love to come with their friends for hiking, kayaking and serious downtime in this totally unspoilt spot.

In a secluded, elevated, position, built into the hillside overlooking the sea loch, An Cos (Gaelic for the hollow) is only 5 minutes walk to the village shop, pub, bistro and smoke-house.

What makes this house unique

Based in London, we usually fly to Inverness or catch the sleeper train from Euston and drive the 80 miles west through stunning scenery. With flights from most UK airports to Inverness (as well as Amsterdam & Geneva) access is relatively easy.

Described as the last wilderness of Europe, the area is stunning: single track roads, pretty villages, the majestic Torridon mountains, friendly locals, amazing wildlife. Fabulous walking direct from the house, sea trips, great cafes and restaurants in the area.

Traditionally built in local stone with all the benefits of underfloor heating and double glazing An Cos is stylishly furnished as our home. With roaring log fires in the lounge and master bedroom, a steam room, exceptionally well equipped kitchen and dining room views most top restaurants can only dream of 'eating in' is a real pleasure.

Notes on accommodation: The house is incredibly warm and cosy with under-flooring heating throughout, oak flooring and Caithness stone. The views from all the main rooms and bedrooms are stunning. The downstairs is semi-open plan so you can view the roaring log fire from the kitchen window seat, or if you prefer, close off the lounge with the large double doors. The granite steam room is perfect after a long walk or just for relaxation. With wonderful light in the Highlands and a south-west position the sunsets and pink skies are beautiful. There is no mobile reception in the house itself, but a short walk down the lane or outside the pub there is a great signal. Free broadband and UK calls The House Manager will be at the house to greet you and show you around. Welcome tea tray and plate of smoked salmon and other local goodies. Complimentary Arran Aromatics toiletries Outside: There are grassy areas at the front and side of the house for sitting/sunbathing, as well as a rear patio and seating area built into the hill and approached by steps at the back of the house. There is a seat (with cushions) as well as a dining table with sun umbrella and seating for 8 at the front of the house. Utility Room: Washing machine Drying machine Butler sink Overhead drying rack Laundry baskets Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Luxurious Egyptian bed-linen and fluffy white towels - one large bath towel, hand towel and face-cloth provided per person. The house is cleaned before and after each let. For 7 day bookings there is a light mid-week clean and towel change. Other: The dining room has a cosy seating area and the best views in the house. The dining table extends to seat 10.

A truly luxurious highland retreat

We had a wonderful stay at An Cos and can't rate it highly enough. The house is beautiful inside and out, with lovely furnishings and every detail considered for a comfortable and relaxing stay. I particularly enjoyed baking in the very well-equipped kitchen, and the steam room was wonderful to come back to after a day outdoors.

The views across the loch are superb, meaning you don't even have to leave the house to get your dose of stunning highland scenery, but there are plenty of great walks a short drive away too.

An Cos is the perfect place to relax and unwind with family - we will be back!

Immaculate luxury home

The house was immaculate and truly a luxury stay. Everything from the salmon and scones waiting for us when we arrived to the amazing steam shower and breathtaking views were perfect. Fiona was super helpful, making dinner reservations for us and also helping us to order a surprise birthday cake for my husband. The town of Shieldag was very charming, and the house was a great starting off point to discover the area. We hope to return again and to stay even longer next time. It is truly the perfect place for some much needed R&R.

A perfect place for enjoying the Highlands

An Cos was exactly as described right from the greeting by Fiona to the excellent facilities available in the house. The house swallowed 8 of us easily with plenty of space to stretch out and do separate things. The kitchen is big enough and well equipped for multiple cooks. The view over the loch to the village made watching the sea eagles, seals and the comings and goings of visitors very easy. A week of outstanding weather made walking in the Torridon hills a real pleasure followed by a bit of sunbathing in the garden or a stroll down to the pub. The local Sheildaig Bar has good beers and excellent local food. We can also recommend Torridon Sea Tours for a cruise out to Red Point. A visit to Applecross Inn is essential for seafood but you need to book.

We'd recommend An Cos for a group looking for luxury in the highlands and we are already planning a return visit.

An. Cos our beautiful family home for a week

We knew that it was going to be special ,I have to say An Cos exceeded all our expectitations the quality and home comforts added to the ambience of this fabulous family home . We were met by Fiona on our arrival Fiona was very welcoming gave us the grand tour of the house and left us to enjoy the wonderful seafood platter locally sourced from the village smoke house fowelled by scone /tea loaf all home made what a welcome As we settled in it was the sheer comfort of quality and attention to detail that we knew we were going to have a fabulous holiday ,the kit he was a dream to be in (so much so that we only dined out twice) it was so well equipped with everything you needed,it was a real pleasure to work in we had a mid week change of towels lots to do great walks stunning scenery we had a boat trip across to the Island to see the magnificent Sea Eagle we were not dissapointed wonderful Seals Sea Otter just wonderful lots to do in this great location magnificent sun sets . We will return as we have come away with some great memories of a wonderful family holiday can't wait to return top holiday destination 5out of 5 from the Harrison Family. Geraldine ALbert (York)

For outstanding nature, walking, climbing, fishing, and magical summer sunsets.

Coast and pebble beaches close to the house. Sandy beaches 30 minutes drive. For spectacular beaches Gairloch is approximately 1 hour's drive.


Inverness is the nearest large town and is 74 miles away, approximately 1.5 hours drive. From the airport, approximately 1.45 hours drive.

Use of a car is essential.

Further Details:

The nearest large supermarkets are in Inverness (1.5 hours away!) so we suggest you do a shop before arriving, or you can arrange for a Tesco delivery direct to the house once there. There is a local shop for basics in the village, as well as an excellent smoke-house for the best salmon you will have ever tasted. It's also possible to get fresh fish if ordered in the village and the butcher from Gairloch visits each week with his mobile shop. There is a very good Spar shop in Lochcarron,as well as a petrol station, bank, 30/40 minutes away. Tesco also do on-line deliveries

There is a tennis court in Shieldaig open to visitors, sea trips from the pier, mountain biking, guided walks, climbing, fishing, kayaking, can all be arranged locally.

There are a variety of award-winning places to eat in the area from small cafes, pubs, bistros to fine dining at the Torridon Hotel.

Balance payable 8 weeks before arrival date (Xmas/New Year 12 weeks)
£500 Good housekeeping deposit payable at the same time as the balance and returned within 7 days of departure providing no deductions to be made
