About colm o'brien
Hi My name is Colm O'Brien, I'm married to Mairead and we have lived in Belgium for the past 20yrs. We have 3 boys, Jake 14, Danny 1 and Joshua 8. We're an Irish family, me being from Dublin and my wife Mairead from Tipperary. I've run my own food related business for many years having spent quite some time working in Michelin starred kitchens in Belgium. I love being in the Charente maritime, as the food and ingredients are to die for! We live just outside Brussels, so have the busy city life to escape when we come down to the relative quietness of Marsais.
colm o'brien purchased this Villa in 2012
Why colm o'brien chose Marsais
We have visited the Charente Maritime every year for the last 9 years and we decided to buy a house here in beautiful Marsais. . Its a great area for getting around seeing the sights, and every year we discover something new to do. We're never bored and we can holiday as fast or as slow as we wish! Its a great area of France if your into your food and wine. whilst being quite simple in tastes, produce from the Charente is honest good fresh food. Seafood is amazing, game in Autumn and fruit and veg that actually taste of what they are supposed to be! We fell in love with the Charente, more because of the people then anything else. No matter where we go we are welcomed warmly.
What makes this Villa unique
As its pretty flat everywhere, its wonderful for cycling. Our 8yr old has been on many 5km plus cycles with us here as the roads are so quiet and easy to cycle on. So we have bikes at your disposal, one equipped with a baby carrier. Only 5 minutes away is a small airfield where you can take a tandem ride in the skys above, wonderful experience! Our pool is always warm as its heated, and as the house is fully private you really feel like your on a secluded holiday. The neighbours are all lovely people, french speaking only! There is a telescope for budding astronomers as the night sky here is something special. Wild life is pretty amazing too, you can expect to get bored with the amount of birds of prey you'll see, and if you wander out at dusk you'll see deers, hares, wild boar, pine martens, hedgehogs, owls, foxes and I've even seen a badger close by. Lizards are regular visitors to the walls around the house, and snakes (not deadly!) can sometimes be spotted at the local stream as can South American Cobayes and crayfish too! Its a bird watchers paradise which isn't my strongest point however one of our bird watching guests has returned several times and always finds something new!

Spacious, comfortable, relaxing.
Absolutely lovely and just like home from home (if I were lucky enough to live in a 19th century converted barn with a private pool!). Very spacious, comfortable and relaxing with secluded garden and fabulous pool. Everything you need is provided and the owner was incredibly quick and responsive to any queries. About 20 mins drive to closest decent supermarket and 1 -1.5 hours to the beaches (Cote Sauvage is stunning).
This house combines traditional French architecture with modern amenities beautifully.
The house is located in a beautiful part of France, with easy access to beaches and islands, as well as the historic city of La Rochelle (which has a very fine rugby team). The pool and garden are a splendid bonus, especially for the younger members of our family who were able to 'explore' in a totally safe environment. Marsais is peaceful and surrounding villages have a variety of amenities. Sugeres is within easy driving distance and is well worth visiting.
The house itself combines traditional French architecture with modern amenities beautifully. So much so, we were happy to spend days enjoying the pool and garden; and barbecueing supper to top things off. The kitchen is well equipped and the accomodation is comfortable. It was sometimes useful to have two bathrooms.
All in all, we had a fantastic holiday; and are considering re-visiting in future years.
We stayed at this lovely holiday home the last week of July 2018. We were surprised by how large the house and garden were, there really is a lot of space. Two families could easily share this house without encroaching on each others space. The garden is gorgeous and was just perfect for our needs. It has a secure parameter with lockable gates so children will remain safe. The pool is beautiful and is much larger than the photos convey, it has steps down into it and also has a motorised security cover for that added peace of mind. The house was well equipped with everything to make this a perfect home from home. There are even several bikes available to use, selection of books, dvds, a great pool table and a hammock which our children adored. The temperatures were very high during our stay however due to the really thick stone walls the house remained fabulously cool and we all slept so well. This is a truly charming property and the only negative being the photos simply do not do it justice! Thank you for a lovely relaxing stay.
Fabulous holiday home
We had a fantastic week in this house. Everything was great. Really well-equipped kitchen, large, comfortable bedrooms and living room, a beautiful garden and bbq area, and lovely pool. We enjoyed using the bikes, eating the plums from the garden, visiting La Rochelle, Venise Verte, and playing tennis on the court in the village. We couldn't have wished for a more relaxing or enjoyable holiday. Many thanks indeed.
We had an amazing two weeks at this property with lovely weather. The pictures do not do the villa justice - the pool is larger than it looks and the walled garden was an added bonus. We spent many days just enjoying the pool and garden. The rooms are spacious and cool in the evenings and the pool table was a welcome distraction! The location of the villa is fabulous for exploring the countryside with trips to La Rochelle and Ile de Re aswell as beach days at Fouras and Chatellion Plage. Nothing is too far away - Surgeres is 10 mins away with lots of shops aswell as bars and markets. We were well looked after and the owners were responsive to emails and any queries we had before and during the holiday. We would highly recommend the villa and would love to go back.
"The ideal relaxed, family stay"
We couldn't have been happier during our stay in Marsais - our first foreign hols with our 2yo and the walled garden, secure pool, large lawn and acres of space inside (the bedrooms are vast and cot provided was excellent quality) made the whole trip a joy from beginning to end. The fully fitted kitchen was a really boon, sharp knives, lots of pots and pans and more than a rusty bottle opener for utensils meant that we could really make the most of the local produce and cook each evening. The pool table was a great asset for those rainy afternoons. The relaxed homely interior meant we could relax with our toddler and thanks to the shutters and thick stone walls he slept solid 12 hour nights!
The location means a car is essential, but the house is perfectly positioned to pop into the local towns for sightseeing and supplies, or even La Rochelle (under 40 mins) then escape back to the rural bliss of Marsais. We'll be back!
The coastal resort of Chatelaillon Plage with its long sandy beaches, cafes, restaurants and lively atmosphere is a 35 minute drive. Other west coast resorts are also easily accessible, these include Fouras, La Rochelle, Ile de Re, Il d'oleron, Ronce les Bains whilst the wild surfing beaches of La cote Sauvage are 60 mins away.
La Rochelle airport is a 35 minute drive and is served by Ryanair, Easyjet, Flybe, Jet2. By Ferry: Brittany Ferries, Condor Ferries, P&O, Eurotunnel and Sea France. Theres a pharmacy within a short walk and local shops - Co-op, Boulangerie, Boucherie - all within a 3 minute drive. The Baker calls by every morning and beeps her horn to let you know she's there. The town of Surgeres with its restaurants, cafes and Abbey is a 10 minute drive. Saint Felix, with its superb restaurant and nightclub is 4 mins away. The Beautiful old Roman town St Jean d'Angely is a 20 minute drive and well worth a visit. The harbour town of La Rochelle is 30 mins away, as is The Old Garrison town of Rochefort.
There is as little or as much to do within one hour of the house. For the active there is biking, motocross, paragliding (such good fun!!!), surfing, windsurfing, kayaking sailing, fishing, go karting, zip wire courses and lots of other activities available within an hour. Theres lots of brochures in the house with all the relevant adresses but if you fancy having some of the activities booked in advance let us know and it can be arranged for you. For food lovers there's lots of really decent markets around and a local organic farm thats a short ride on the bike away with the most fab veg you can get. Of course you will be only a short hope to Cognac (40 mins) and Loire Valley (1hr) and Pineau producers (20 mins) for wines and cognacs etc.
For Kids who love animals there is lots to do, we have three and are never short of day trips with them. Zoodysee is 10 mins, La Palmyre Zoo is 45 mins, theres a fantastic aquarium in La Rochelle. Vallée des Singes is over an hour but well worth the trip as there is monkeys roaming about freely everywhere and plenty of opportunities to meet them. As for other Attractions theres Futuroscope (1hr) which is fantastic as is Puy de Fou (1.15hr) which is worth a stop over if you can manage it. Other attractions for kids include a water park with slides and wave machines etc in St Jean d'Angley (20mins) alongside electric boating and a very decent playground right beside it.
The area is well known for its historic heritage, playing an important role within the Roman empire with plenty of ruins to visit. In la Rochelle theres the Maritime musuem and trips can be taken out to Fort Boyard by boat from here. Rochefort has L'Hermione, a replica of a 1779 frigate that you can now board and have guided tours. Niort and St Jean D'Angely are also full of buildings predating 14th Century.
