This large old house was the Red Lion Inn for over 250 years, and a farm before that. Spacious, comfortable, stylish eclectic and fun - it is our family home rather than holiday accommodation, so has all the fixtures and facilities needed for a lovely stay, but is quirky and full of character, and is furnished with a great deal of variety - including antiques and contemporary art. The cinema is one of England's smallest and is available for our guests exclusively at no extra charge on Saturdays if you are weekend guests, and there's plenty of weekday accessibility too! We have 4 double bedrooms and 1 single, with additional space for using the single or double mattresses we can supply to add a sleeping space in the library. There's also a double sofa bed in the living room. It's particularly suitable for groups of different ages and interests, though for very loud parties or hen parties it is not ideal. Please talk to us to discuss your plans and we may be able to help. We have a pool table and the cinema has high definition projection - it also connects to games consoles and laptops. The area is full of interest and amenity - from the Mendip Hills just behind the house to the Somerset levels in front. We are 2 miles from Cheddar and its gorges and caves, 20 minutes from the seaside to the West or the beautiful city of Wells to the east with its magnificent cathedral. You can see Glastonbury Tor from the top of the house or the charming walled garden. There is a courtyard which is great for summer barbeques and eating alfresco. There's also a library with 4000 books to browse, and the library, living room and even the bathroom have open fires.
Axbridge itself is a lovely place - a thriving small community with all the amenities needed - with its pubs, tea house, chemist, gift shop and tiny museum.Visitors can use the public amenities like the playground and football field all within a 5 minute walk, and there is a farmer's market on the first Saturday of each month.
The Roxy cinema is open to the public in UK term times on most Fridays and occasional Thursdays, but we always keep Saturdays for the exclusive use of our guests. Choose a film from our library or bring your own DVDs or BluRay films to watch. It has a charming art deco foyer, has original seats and fittings, and a 1950's cocktail bar.
The house gets a lot of press attention and has been featured in Interiors and travel magazines, TV shows and articles. We are featured in Homes & Antiques magazine in March 2012 and December 2015, and have been published in ‘Top 10 interesting and quirky places to stay’ in Time Out, the Sunday Telegraph and Best of British to name but a few, and one of the top 50 'secret places in Somerset'
