About Isobel James
Simon and I bought The Priory, Swallows Cottage and The Old Engine house in 2009. Since then we have renovated The Priory and Swallow's Cottage to ensure maximum comfort - whether it be beds, heating or endless hot water. Our landscape gardener has developed the grounds, especially around the swimming pool, sympathetically and with great detail. Our three teenage children are often away and we relish the chance to look after our Swallows Cottage guests and love introducing them to our special Derbyshire "finds". We love being in such a peaceful spot but are endlessly grateful that we are just such a short distance from Ashbourne.
Isobel James purchased this Cottage in 2009
Why Isobel James chose Tissington and Lea Hall
Having lived in a local village (some 6 miles from Asbourne), very happily, for 10 years, we were thrilled to find the combination of rural peace but without being miles from civilization - with Ashbourne just 2 miles away we can easily whizz in for milk, papers and take-aways without feeling that we are in a built-up area. An added bonus is that we can walk by footpath, directly from the front door, to Tissington and Fenny Bentley.
What makes this Cottage unique
When we bought the property we were advised by many friends not to put a pool in - how glad we are now that we ignored their advice! This Summer has been glorious - Derbyshire at its very best. Breakfasting by the pool on a quiet Summer's morning can't be beaten. We have fishing rights on the Bentley Brook (just across the lane) and you are welcome to bring your fishing kit.

Lovely family weekend away
Had a very pleasant stay and have already booked to return! Everything we needed on site and lovely to meet the owners
Dear Bill and Mary Ann, Thank you so much for your lovely comments - we so enjoyed having you all to stay! Warmest wishes, Izzy
Little piece of heaven
Stayed for 3 nights in the middle of September- wish it had been longer. Owner gave a warm welcome the house was quiet - kitchen well stocked and the furnishing tasteful and comfortable.
We visited Chatsworth House (a must if you haven’t been) walked over the fields behind the cottage to Tissington and generally relaxed drank wine and read books and magazines - the absolute perfect getaway - we will be going back!
Beautiful cottage in gorgeous grounds
What a wonderful place to stay . The pool made it for us as my son finally gained the confidence to swim . Izzy is a wonderful host making us very welcome . We didn’t leave at all as the weather was so glorious we had everything we needed .
Thank you so much for your lovely comments, Sarah - we loved having you all to stay and were thrilled that the pool was such a welcome feature. We'd love to see you all again soon. Warmest wishes, Izzy
Beautiful place, so peaceful
A real home away from home. Very well equipped, perfectly clean and wonderful hosts. Izzy made us feel really welcome from the outset and was available but not intrusive throughout our stay. There is loads to do in the area no matter what the weather does and the scenery is stunning. The pool was kept clean and warm and was a welcomed activity for our family.
I would highly recommend Swallow Cottage for anyone looking for a peaceful and relaxing time with the additional benefits of the surrounding area.
Hi Helen, Thank you so much for your lovely comments - really appreciated. I'm so pleased that you managed to make good use of the pool and gardens - Derbyshire is pretty amazing at this time of year! Do come back and see us again.
Absolutely blissful venue and location. Boys had great fun playing in swimming pool.
Izzy was the perfect host and the holiday cottage was truly lovely. The swimming pool was amazing and use of barbeque was really helpful too. Would definitely stay again.
Hi Leah, Thank you so much for your lovely comments and I'm thrilled that you all had such a good time. We loved having you to stay and hope to welcome you back to Swallows Cottage again soon. Warmest wishes, Izzy
Amazing Cottage - Wonderful Owner
The cottage was gorgeous, clean, and beautifully decorated. Bedrooms incredibly comfy, outdoor area was excellent and communal rooms well maintained. The Shower was wonderfully hot even after 4 girls going through it, kitchen was well stocked with several of the essentials and having the board games and DVDs was an unexpected delight!
The pool was heated to the perfect temperature, and the swimming was excellent. We explored the garden after prompting from Izzy, and throughly enjoyed the Victorian swimming pool turned pond complete with ducklings!
Thank you so much for your lovely comments Sophie, we loved having you all to stay! So pleased that you had a great trip and managed to get some swimming in too!

The Georgian market town of Ashbourne is just 2 miles away, with plenty of independent retailers (antique shops, clothes and delicatessens) alongside a Waitrose, Majestic Wine, Sainsburys, M&S Food, and Co-Op. The village of Brassington (5 miles) has a wonderful, unspoilt pub serving excellent pub food - The Old Gate Inn. The Duncombe Arms at Ellastone (8 miles) is a fabulous, buzzy pub with delicious food. The George at Alstonefield (6.5 miles) has truly amazing food - all of the above are worth booking beforehand. Newly opened "Whites" in Ashbourne offers relaxed French food and a great selection of cocktails. We also love Cafe Impromptu on Church Street in Ashbourne...when they say home-made they really mean it....open for breakfast, lunch and tea.
The estate-owned village of Tissington can be reached by footpath from your back door (or a quick 5 minute drive). Frequently used for historical filming this unspoilt gem is great for walking around...village duck pond, butchers, old fashioned sweetie shop and great tea rooms...their annual Well Dressings (on Ascension Day) are not to be missed. Take the Tissington Trail (walk or cycle) to Ashbourne or north towards Parsley Hay.
A visit to Chatsworth is a must....look on their website for behind-the scenes tours and special events. Don't forget Haddon Hall and Hardwick Hall, too.
Younger children will love the farmyard at Chatsworth, Gulliver's Kingdom, Alton Towers, china painting at Sticky Fingers in Ashbourne or just cycling round Carsington Water.
