About Mary Clark

I live in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, and am a physiotherapist in private practice

Why Mary Clark chose Saint-Laurent-la-Vernède

I looked in many areas of France before finding this delightful area, which is beautiful, has so much to see and do and also a lovely mediterranean climate.

I love characterful properties and this one has a lovely feel to it. It is quiet and peaceful but has the amenities of the village on the doorstep as well as country walks. It is attractively equipped and furnished. The 3 terraces give one an option of sitting in sun or shade at different times of the day, and there is nothing nicer than sitting on the roof terrace with a glass of rose, watching the sun go down

What makes this house unique

Even in high season when the nearby tourist spots can feel too crowded for some , it is lovely to come back to the calm of the village. It is peaceful ,yet close to everything

Guestbook comments from the owner

A very enjoyable hideaway

  • 5 of 5

A perfect location in beautiful and quiet Provence town. We spent some days in local area exploring the town itself and around. The owner provided quite detailed "field manual" of possible things to do, places to visit and where to get necessities. Very helpful and enjoyable. If you want a bit more crowded places there is always Uzes nearby and Avignon is not far. The Grotto of the Salamander to the north is definitely worth visiting (check if it is open as it is normally closed to visits for half a year) as well as river Cascades just fifteen minutes drive to the north-east (a visit to nearby castle-town as bonus). You can swim there or in town pool in Usez (4 Euro per visit or cheaper ten visits plan). Or you can take couple of hours drive to Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer if you prefer a beach.

The house itself is amazing and very cozy. Don't want to go into the details as it is much more fun do discover them yourself if you visit for a first time. A funny bunch of local cats and kittens were keeping us company. The squirrel is a blast by the way. Got us scared a bit at first in the darkness.

A slight drawback is absence of air conditioner so be prepared to manage windows and door shutters at morning and evening to keep house cool and not heating up during the day if you stay in the hot season. But basically this just adds to non-urban feel.

The internet connection is available which is important for us as we have to work from time to time. The mobile connection coverage around is somewhat lacking in some places disappearing completely. Well, that's the whole point of "hideaway", right?

Closest ATM to get cash you can find near tourist office in Saint-Quentin-la-Poterie - a halfway to the Uzes.

Should you visit by car you will have no problem reaching any point of interest. Not so sure in case of public transportation, but you can consult the owner before making decision to book.

The bottom line: the stay was totally worth it and huge thanks to Mary for the help and explanations.

Spacious Village House with character!

  • 5 of 5

This charming house is located in an ancient village with amenities including boulangerie, well stocked shop, and wine cave. Great wine! There is close proximity to the thriving village of Saint Quentin la Poterie with larger market and excellent restaurants . Good access to area attractions.

House was oozing with character and tastefully decorated. Nice linens were provided with comfy beds. There are two wood burning stoves which we used since our visit was in February and a once in a decade snow storm occurred during our stay. The three terraces would be lovely in warmer weather. Would recommend if you are looking for an authentic French getaway!

Charming house in the Gard

  • 5 of 5

We have become regulars each September/October for the last 4 years. The house is very well appointed, immaculately clean and conveniently situated in a quiet, friendly village but within easy access of Uzes. Our main hobby is walking with our dog and there are many good walks on the doorstep or within a short drive away. There are restaurants and bars in the surrounding villages plus good supermarket in Quentin St Poterie. WIFI is good!

Lots of charm and exceptional value

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed in the area several times, often in larger villas. However, we really enjoyed the charm of this village house. We did miss a pool, but the various terraces in this house provide ample opportunity for dining, relaxing and enjoying the sun. We do like cooking and so missed an actual oven but this did not spoil our stay - just became more adventurous with the BBQ. The village is small but does provide the essential boulangerie; again we missed not having a local cafe, but the one restaurant (with the magnificent Madame du Plant - so named after the digestive she insisted on giving us) provides good value for money and local produce. We were at the village during the fete, so there was a bit more activity, but there is so much to do in the local area. Uzes is the usual local attraction, but we also enjoyed the authentic character of nearby Bagnols.

Highly recommended for a couple or a small group - Hugo, our dog loved it - though not sure the local cats had such a good time. Mary, the owner, was extremely helpful at all stages.

Lovely house in a charming village

  • 5 of 5

We stayed as a family of 4 and enjoyed the ambiance of the house. The terraces captured the sun throughout the day. We travelled with our dog who loved the walks around the house. I have recommended it to others and we would stay again.

Lovely St Laurent la Vernede house

  • 5 of 5

My husband and me have stayed in this charming house for a week mid August 2014. True to description there is a plenty of space inside and out - two nice sized bedrooms, mezzanine area, large living and dining room, bathroom and separate shower, homely kitchen, three terraces- one nicer then the other one. We have used the terraces throughout the day as the sun turned to get the most of it. The most perfect one is the top terrace for enjoying sunsets and gazing a the stars in the night.

We have used bbq a few times, internet connection was perfect and all of the premises were clean and inviting- including the bunch of welcome sunflowers on the kitchen table. The owner was helpful by providing a list of things to do in the area without which we would have missed a bin collection day, cheese van during the week or pizza van on Friday. Also we had frequent visits from cute local cats which was fun.

The location was perfect- small village to enjoy peace and quiet but close enough to reach near villages( and there is plenty of those around) or bigger towns- we even made it to Carcassonne.

There are places to swim in the river in Gard, Haribo factory near Uzes, canoeing and many walking routes.

Local people were very friendly which made the place even more attractive for us.

All in all, a great place in a lovely area! Definitely recommended!

There are many excellent restaurants in the area near this beautiful holiday rental, especially in Uzes where there is the market on Saturdays and Wednesdays, which is busy with everything on sale from fresh olives, fish and vegetables to linen and lavender. The nearby village of St Quentin La Poterie also has a good market on Friday morning, a supermarket and a good variety of nice shops and restaurants, plus a chemist and doctor. Also an ATM.

The historic towns of Avignon, Nimes and Orange are all within easy reach, the latter two holding musical and operatic performances in their Roman Amphitheatres. Nimes also has a variety of Ferias throughout the year, including a two week Flamenco Feria in January and another in September.

For the more energetic, there are great walksfrom the house and cycling routes nearby ( cycles can be hired from St Quentin la Poterie). There is a large area under the house where you can store your bikes or kayacs. The Ardeche Gorge is only an hour away. Go swimming at Les Cascades de Sutadet, Montclus or numerous other places along the river Ceze or Collias where you can canoe beneath the spectacular Roman aquaduct at the Pont du Gard. An hour or so and you can be at the beach at St Maries de la Mer in the Carmargue, famous for its flamingos, white horses and Bulls, or at Les Pieds Nus , a lovely restaurant on the beach with sunloungers near Le Grau du Roi.

If you prefer to swim in as pool , there is a public one in Uzes or a water parc , La Bouscarosse

Alternatively you can visit the wonderful caves a short drive away, such as La Grotte de la Salamandre , only recently open to the public where they also hold concerts with dinner from time to time.

Most villages, including ours, have a local wine shop / vineyard where you can have a tasting. The house is right on the edge of the Cotes du Rhone and Pays D'Oc areas.
