This unique rustic little cottage adjacent to marshes bordering the River Yare is in the perfect location for those wanting to relax and unwind whatever the season. This peaceful romantic hideaway was once the home of the Marshman who tended to the cattle grazing on the marshes, and we have tried to retain its rustic charm with original brick floors and wood burning stove. The network of quiet lanes and extensive riverside footpaths (including Surlingham RSPB Reserve,Ted Ellis Reserve and the Wherryman’s way) make it the ideal spot for walking, cycling, fishing (with licence), bird watching, or just cosy nights in front of the fire on a winter's evening. A motor launch can be hired locally to explore the expanse of Norfolk Broad Waterways, plentiful with wildlife and ample opportunity to visit the many riverside inns. Nearest pub 10 minute walk! You cannot fail to be enchanted by all that Marsh Cottage and the surrounding area has to offer with nature well and truly on your doorstep. We now have a Canadian canoe that you are welcome to borrow during your stay. It is kept a 10 minute walk from the cottage where you can access the wonderful waterways leading to Surlingham Broad and the River Yare.

tranquil hideaway with super views
We enjoyed our stay at Marsh cottage so much and will definitely return. The view over the marshes was superb and we just loved walking around the RSPB reserve, doing at least one circuit a day. The walk along the riverbank to the Ferry Inn at sunset was a real highlight. We brought bikes and cycled the short distance to the Ted Ellis reserve for more brilliant walks and wildlife spotting. We found the cottage well equipped with plenty of space for the two of us. It is pretty with stone floors ,tasteful furnishings and a very comfy bed. Pip couldn't have been more helpful, kindly providing a place by the river where we could leave our canoe. (It's a lovely paddle along the Yare into Norwich). The fresh flowers and the delicious brownies were a nice touch. We'd wholeheartedly recommend this cottage to anyone wanting some peace and great wildlife spotting.
Thank you for taking the time to write us such a wonderful review. We are thrilled you had such a good time and enjoyed the wonderful walks straight from the cottage. We are so lucky to have such wonderful wildlife in view from the cottage. At this time of year there is a huge murmuration of starlings every evening followed by a skein of pink footed geese coming into the reserve. Please do come again!
Idyllic setting for relaxation
Very cute cottage in a classical Norfolk setting. Surrounded by wildlife and history it is particularly therapeutic as a city escape. Local riverside eating places are characterful and world class (looking at you Waters Edge Woodsend!).
Thank you very much! So glad you enjoyed Marsh Cottage and its location.I am delighted you enjoyed the local pubs too! It is a great place to unwind and get away from it all.
Perfect Cottage in Stunning Location
A superb cottage that is more spacious than we expected. Nicely decorated and comfortable. The location is superb with excellent views out over the marsh. Plenty of good walks in the area with a choice of several good pubs that can be visited on route. We also enjoyed taking the canoe out and exploring the nearby broads and backwaters.
Thank you Alan for taking the time to write such a lovely review. I am delighted you enjoyed your stay at Marsh Cottage and I am thrilled you ventured out on to the Broads in our canoe.
Lovely cottage and surroundings. Would thoroughly recommend.
If you are looking a holiday to escape to the country for total relaxation then this is the place for you. Set in RSPB Surlingham Marsh Farm nature reserve the cottage is set just by the marshes where you can watch an abundance of wildlife. We instantly saw a Marsh Harrier swooping across the marsh with a kestrel and heron close behind. The sunset from the cottage is not to be missed. The cottage itself is perfect with a lot of space inside equipped with everything you need for a relaxing week. The garden is also well kept with a mound in the slope for a great place to picture the marshes.
There is a pub nearby (Ferry House) and is only a 10 minute walk away. A good selection of food is available here and you can eat in the garden and watch the boats and world pass by. Not far from here is the Canadian canoe that you can use which we will be trying on our next visit.
We did visit the Ted Ellis nature reserve and would also recommend if you like a good walk. I did email Pip if there was anywhere close to fish in the River Yare and she kindly let us use a platform on her property which was close by. The platform was big enough for the two of us and we caught plenty of roach and rudd from here in the couple of afternoons that we went for a fish.
The cottage was more than we expected. It is a great base for exploring and also perfect if you just wanted to lounge about and recharge your batteries.
We had a great week here and will be definitely going back in the near future. It was an easy 10/10 for us.

What an amazing review thank you. I am pleased the fishing was a success and I am delighted you wish to return next summer. Yes you must go out in the canoe on your next visit, it is great fun and a super way to spot kingfishers and maybe even an otter if you are lucky! See you next June!
a week of total relaxation
very private and quiet countryside. We where spoiled by having great weather, loved the canoe, we also hired a motor boat for the day which was great fun. Saw lots of wildlife which we enjoyed , especially the newly hatched moor hens . Definitely return. Thankyou.
What a super review, thank you. I am really pleased you got out on the water. The weather was perfect for boating! Great that you wish to return.
Dear Pip, as soon as we saw the flint cottage, turned the bend we knew we were in for a special Christmas. The Christmas we really both needed, peaceful and traditional. We love your cottage, every single little nook and cranny was perfect. Bumble loved the walks and I even saw a Marsh Harrier, much to my excitement. Sitting in the evening, in front of the log burner with a snoozing dog, bottle of bubbly and a quiet man reading his book, was just the tonic. The Christmas tree was so lovely, it really made everything perfect. We will be back and my sister who I shared photos with is busy looking to see when she can book, for some much needed peace and quiet. In the hustle and bustle of school life it will be great knowing that I have this secret little oasis to retreat to on occasion.
Thank you for your lovely review. Marsh cottage is indeed the ideal retreat for a quiet and peaceful Christmas. Come and stay again when you need to get away from it all!
The cottage is an easy 40 minute drive from Norfolk’s finest coastline with sandy beaches backed with dunes and traditional seaside towns.
Marsh Cottage is 12 miles from Norwich Airport and 5 miles from Norwich Station where there are mainline services direct to Liverpool Street Station, London and other regional towns. If travelling by train please let us know and we can arrange a taxi to get you to the cottage. The cottage is at the end of a bumpy rough track less than half a mile long. It can get very wet and muddy in the winter months.
Its location is an easy 5 miles from the medieval City of Norwich with its cathedral, museums, theatres, fantastic shopping, market place, restaurants and cafes. Marsh Cottage is in an enviable position away from it all with peace and quiet in the countryside yet so close to our wonderful city of Norwich. Experience it all!
