Unique Spacious Historic Apartment On The Fife Coast close to Edinburgh

Bedrooms 3
Property type apartment
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

Apartment in Kinghorn, Nr. Burntisland, Fife, Scotland

The self-catering apartment consists of a large open planned living/dining area, with a fully equipped kitchen just off the main space. The living room is comfortable and spacious, with a Smart TV, DVD player, selection of books, DVDs and board games. The dining table seats 6 although there are a couple of extra seats is required.

To access the upstairs, you can reach the top floor by the main staircase out from the Livingroom door or by the secret spiralled staircase by the kitchen. On the top floor there are 3 bedrooms, bathroom and the washing machine/tumble dryer. There is a twin bedroom; with two single beds, Queen sized double bed, 3/4 / small double bed - which we normally recommend for 1 adult or two children, this has an ensuite with shower. In the main bathroom, there is a bath and shower over the bath.

Accommodation is on the 1st and 2nd floors, with the old ground floor jail housing the office of Fife Historic Buildings Trust. The apartment has been sympathetically restored, retaining many period features. The rooms are furnished in keeping with the history of the building, while providing all the modern amenities you would expect.

Built in the Tudor Gothic style, this impressive castellated stone structure enjoys glimpses out across the Firth of Forth. The Town Hall was constructed in 1826, replacing an earlier medieval building which was hit and seriously damaged by lightning. Part of the original building is thought to date back to the 12th century. Latterly it was used to provide the debating chamber, offices and prison cells for the Burgh Council. The new building was designed by the architect Thomas Hamilton (1784-1858) and was used for Council functions for almost 150 years but fell into disrepair in the 1980s. It was restored in 2009.

Why Beth Bell chose Kinghorn

Some guests have called it a little private castle, it is such a unique property with original features, which somehow makes you feel special the moment you step in. Kinghorn Town Hall is the ideal central location for staying local or traveling further afield. Whether you want to visit Edinburgh for the many festivals, shops or restaurants or eat local and explore the independent shops in Kinghorn and Fife.

What makes this apartment unique

Because this historic property has been restored in keeping with the history, it is a fascinating apartment to stay in. Plenty of room, however still remaining cosy and intimate. There is Gas Central Heating throughout the property, which heats the apartment well. Kinghorn Town Hall is positioned well for access around Fife as well as close to Edinburgh, without needing to be in the centre of the city.

Guestbook comments from the owner

''Had the pleasure of staying at Kinghorn Town hall for 3 nights. This is such an amazing experience and if you are in or around the area I highly recommend! We loved character of this place and it's such a nice change to staying in hotels. Everything we needed was supplied for. This will be certainly be our first choice on any returns to the area. Our stay was made all that sweeter knowing that the fees paid were going towards the upkeep of an important historical building known and loved by many in Kinghorn. Not to be missed!''

We had a wonderful time at Kinghorn Town Hall. We were pleasantly surprised by the spaciousness of this property. We kept opening doors and finding one more room.

I would recommend this home to anyone wanting to visit the area.

I would definitely come back to this rental.

Thank you for a great time and your great hospitality.

Gracious living

  • 5 of 5

Historic property - full of character and different from the average holiday let. Convenient for local public transport - we used it as a base to walk chunks of the Fife Coastal path, then jumped on a bus to get back. The Ship Inn opposite the property does fantastic freshly prepared food.

A Wonderful Stay.

  • 5 of 5

We spent a long weekend in this superb Old Town Hall. It was grand and characterful yet warm and cosy at the same time. The photographs are absolutely genuine and it has all that is needed for a great stay. Kinghorn itself is a beautiful location, the bay is picturesque and the village has all the shops needed for a self catering location, including the Ship Restaurant opposite. The real icing on the cake however is the Old Town Hall. We will certainly return.

Wonderful Holiday

  • 5 of 5

This is a simply beautiful property. The building itself is so impressive and the interior is jaw-droppingly gorgeous. It was like living in a film!

It's classic and formal and at the same time homely and very comfortable. The kitchen is well-appointed with everything one could need to prepare and present even a most elaborate meal. There's a good washer and dryer upstairs. The bathrooms are spacious. The bedrooms are unique and lovely, especially the master, which is in the former bell tower. It's very quiet and private. The flat is immaculate. They've really thought of everything. I was completely at ease and didn't want for anything. It's a real home away from home.

It's located an easy walk from a charming, peaceful coastline. There are restaurants, a grocer, and a nice pub mere steps from the front door, and there's a good chippy that delivers until quite late in the evening. There's a larger grocery shop just a few minutes' drive to the North. The Trust has thoughtfully prepared binders of information about amenities and services and local activities as well as about the history of the building itself.

Check-in and check-out were straightforward and easy, with excellent communication and helpful, clear instructions.

I just can't say enough good things.

Thank you for a marvellous week. I hope very much to stay with you again.

Fabulous property

  • 5 of 5

We loved this property. It had the wow factor every day.

The bed in the master bedroom was super comfy (so comfy I have bought the same pillows).

It would have been great to be able to get to the garden direct from the stairwell but we have no complaints as we knew we couldn't in advance and it didn't stop us sitting out on a sunny September day. We had total privacy in there, like a secret garden, and it was a bit like being in another era.

We really appreciated the care package when we arrived. That was a nice touch.

Kinghorn was a lovely place to wander about.

Car: recommended

Kinghorn is a great base for exploring the many locations in Fife where the drama series 'Outlander' is filmed. Aberdour Castle, Falkland, Dysart Harbour and Balgonie Castle are only a short car journey away.

There is a quiet, sheltered beach only a few minutes walk from the apartment. At the other end of the village is Pettycur Bay - a long, wide stretch of golden sand which is excellent for walks and outdoor activities.

From here you will be rewarded with stunning views across the Firth of Forth towards Edinburgh and The Lothians. If the tide is out, you can walk right along to Burntisland.

Kinghorn is 24 miles from Edinburgh and easily reached by road. Airlines that fly to Edinburgh from other parts of the UK include Flybe, Easyjet, Ryanair and British Airways. There are several car hire companies at Edinburgh airport. There is plenty of space for parking on the street outside Kinghorn Town Hall.

Kinghorn railway station is only a few minutes walk away and provides easy rail access to Edinburgh and to the north.

The nearest town, Kirkcaldy is 4 miles away and can be reached by train, car or bus.

Edinburgh - 24 miles

St. Andrews - 20 miles

Dundee - 35 miles

Further Details:

There are several shops on Kinghorn High Street, just a few minutes walk from the apartment. These include a baker, butcher, a Co-op supermarket, post office and chemist. There are also a number of pubs in Kinghorn. The Ship Inn opposite the Town Hall serves food, and there is also a ‘cupcake café’ on the high street.

A number of high-street shops and supermarkets can be found in Kirkcaldy which is 4 miles away.

The beautiful fishing villages of the East Neuk of Fife such as Crail, Anstruther, Pittenweem, St Monans and Elie are easily reached by car, as are the historic towns of Dunfermline and Kirkcaldy.

Kinghorn has its own railway station with a regular service that takes you across the famous Forth Bridge, straight into the heart of Edinburgh where you can visit the famous Castle, Edinburgh Zoo, Sir Walter Scott's Monument, the Scottish Parliament Buildings, the newly refurbished National Museum of Scotland or in the summer, take in a show at the famous Edinburgh Festival or military Tattoo. There is high-street and designer shopping on Princes Street and George Street, or you can enjoy the many bars, cafes and restaurants before returning by train to put your feet up in your ‘coastal retreat’!

There are plenty of activities to entertain families, whatever the weather, with play parks, a loch and ecology centre, indoor leisure facilities, and Kirkcaldy museum and art gallery all close by.
